The foot injury that Anthony Davis suffered last week has decreased the chances that the Lakers will gamble on a major trade, multiple sources tell Jovan Buha of The Athletic. He adds that the only exception would be if the team can acquire a young star that it believes can succeed alongside Davis over the next few years.
Even before the Davis injury, the Lakers’ front office wasn’t confident that there was a trade available that would turn the team into contenders, Buha states. He suggests the most likely current scenario is a deal that would include some combination of Patrick Beverley, Kendrick Nunn and a protected first-rounder in either 2027 or 2029 in exchange for a 3-and-D wing or a combo forward.
Along with the players who have already been linked to the Lakers in trade talks, Buha’s sources point to the Suns‘ Jae Crowder, the Rockets‘ Eric Gordon, the Pistons‘ Alec Burks, the Hornets‘ Terry Rozier, P.J. Washington and Kelly Oubre Jr. and the Spurs‘ Josh Richardson and Jakob Poeltl as players to watch.
There’s more on the Lakers, all from Buha:
- LeBron James has posted four straight 30-point games, but his playing time is starting to become a concern. He’s averaged 39.2 minutes over the past five games, and the Lakers need to be careful that they don’t rely too heavily on him. Buha notes that James, who will turn 38 next week, ranks sixth in minutes per game among players with at least 50 total games over the past two seasons.
- The loss of Davis has been eased somewhat by the emergence of Thomas Bryant. Buha states that Bryant was considered “almost unplayable” before Davis got hurt, but he’s averaging 17.7 points and 7.0 rebounds in the last three games while shooting 61.1% from the field and 55.6% from three-point range. The 25-year-old center joined the Lakers during the offseason on a veteran’s minimum contract and will be a free agent again next summer.
- Rookie shooting guard Max Christie recently moved into the rotation and may be playing well enough to stay there. The second-round pick provides a much-needed 3-and-D option for coach Darvin Ham, and he’s one of the best rebounders among the team’s guards.
- The starting backcourt of Beverley and Dennis Schroder hasn’t performed well, and Buha wonders why Ham keeps playing them together. The Lakers are minus-50 in 161 minutes when they’re on the court at the same time, and their skills seem to be redundant.
Lakers need to make a move or will be left watching the post season from home.
Lakers might be watching from home whether they make a move or not…injury gonna doom this squad
The only move that would help is fire Rob. Maybe bench the Rambis’ would help too.
I’m not convinced winning is the goal though. They let AC go over 10M per season which makes zero sense if you’re trying to win right now.
Maybe Jeannie needs the money for some investment she’s making. The lakers as a franchise don’t seem to be worried about anything.
The Los Angeles Lakers head coach should still be Frank Vogel. I’m rooting for Darvin Ham but he’s doing a bad job. Looks like a deer in headlights. I thought he was supposed to bring that toughness and defensive identity to the team. We 13-18 and I haven’t seen it yet. LeBron James should only be playing 32 minutes a game at this stage of his career. Thomas Bryant should’ve been playing and should’ve been the starting Center and Anthony Davis should’ve been the Starting Power Forward. I don’t know why we playing so small and playing Anthony Davis at Center.
Oh yeah because Frank Vogel did a hell of a job…
GMs hang up and laugh uncontrollably as soon Pelinka illiterates the words “I want a young 3&D wing or young star for a protected pick” Who’s going to give away a young budding star or a high level 3-D wing for a future protected pick lmfaoooooo
That’s…how the trade market works? Teams trade players and picks (usually protected) for other players and picks? Also I have no idea what you mean with “illiterates”. To my knowledge, illiterates isn’t a verb.
I’m pretty sure the part he’s laughing at is the protected part. As in a team might be interested but not if the pick is protected…
Any GM should love talking to Rob. Rob has been fleeced in every major trade he’s made. He even overpaid for Davis when Davis demanded to come to the Lakers.
Not to mention is a pick that’s either 5 or 7 years out. Going to be a hard time convincing them to accept a protected pick unless it’s only top 3 or 5 protected
no one is going to accept any protections on those picks. The whole point of those picks so far out is that are almost guaranteed to be top of the lottery. LBJ and AD will be long gone and they have no picks or young players to retool leading up to those drafts.
Both Dennis Schroder and Thomas Bryant was hurt to start the season. When the season started the Starters should’ve been.
SF LeBron James
PF Anthony Davis
C Damian Jones
SG Lonnie Walker IV
PG Patrick Beverley
When they both got healthy the starters should’ve been
SF LeBron James
PF Anthony Davis
C Thomas Bryant
SG Lonnie Walker IV
PG Dennis Schroder
Russell Westbrook should’ve always been the 6th man and should’ve started the year off in that role. Austin Reaves 7th man. Troy Brown Jr as the 8th man. Damian Jones as the 9th man.
Wenyen Gabriel and Patrick Beverley and Kendrick Nunn shouldn’t even be in the rotation.
Anthony Davis should be playing his natural position at Power Forward. He’s a Power Forward not a Center. I just don’t get it. Giannis Antetokounmpo plays Power Forward not Center and that is what Brook Lopez is for. Tim Duncan played Power Forward and David Robinson and Tiago Splitter played Center. Kevin Garnett played Power Forward and Dean Garrett and Kendrick Perkins played Center. Karl Malone played Power Forward and Mark Eaton and Greg Ostertag played Center. It’s protecting your star players from injury and having to do so much banging down low and risking injury. Anthony Davis used to be a 6’3 Point Guard and hit a major growth spurt and grew to 6’10. So yes he is a Power Forward and should be playing there. He should only be closing the 2nd and 4th quarters at Center.
Darvin Ham really needs to get it together.
Now that Anthony Davis hurt. The starters should be.
SF Troy Brown Jr.
PF LeBron James
C Thomas Bryant
SG Lonnie Walker IV
PG Dennis Schroder
Then the rest of the rotation should be Russell Westbrook Austin Reaves Max Christie and Damian Jones.
Wenyen Gabriel Patrick Beverley and Kendrick Nunn shouldn’t be in the rotation.
