DECEMBER 8: The Timberwolves have put out a press release officially announcing that they’ve signed Ryan to a two-way contract and waived Lawson.
DECEMBER 6: The Timberwolves are signing forward Matt Ryan to a two-way contract, Shams Charania and Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic tweet. Minnesota will waive A.J. Lawson to make room for Ryan, Krawczynski adds in another tweet.
Ryan was waived by the Lakers last week.
Minnesota ranks 28th in 3-point shooting at 32.6% and hopes that Ryan can help in that area. He joined the Lakers on a non-guaranteed minimum-salary contract in September and earned a spot on the regular season roster.
Ryan made 13-of-35 attempts 3-point attempts (37.1%) for L.A. this season but only converted 2-of-14 two-pointers. In total, he averaged 3.9 PPG in 12 appearances (10.8 MPG).
Ryan went undrafted out of Chattanooga in 2020 and eventually landed with the Grand Rapids Gold in the G League in 2021/22. He made his NBA debut with the Celtics this past spring.
Lawson appeared in just one game for the Timberwolves after signing a two-way contract in mid-November. He was playing for the Hawks’ G League affiliate prior to inking that contract.
It’s the second time Minnesota has waived Lawson. He was previously signed on a two-way deal in July. The Wolves initially waived him to add Luka Garza in mid-October.
Matt Ryan can make a really good Kyle Korver role in this league, if he can ever find a real contract with playing time. That’s not on the t wolves
Minnesota could definitely use a shooter.
The Lakers could use a shooter. Still scratching my head as to why he was cut loose in the first place
Because his 13 of 35 (37.1%) is deceptive. If you watch every Laker game only a handful of his made 3s came during important minutes or were in any way clutch shots. The others were all mop up buckets. He was also mediocre to poor defensively, and fouled too much and also not much help with offensive ball movement. He was basically a one trick catch and shoot pony and when he was brought in to do just that at key times, when a few or even back-to-back 3s could have made a big impact, he’d miss. The buzzer beater (not game winner) that sent a game to overtime was his lone highlight.
How deceptive is the team’s overall 31.7% shooting percentage?
Ha! Sadly, not deceptive at all. With even one dependable sharpshooter in the rotation, the team would easily be 14-10 instead of 10-14
Tyler Hall of the Texas Legends is 46 of 107 from 3, 43.0%
Drake Jeffries would be an interesting player on a two way, as he is 22 or 23 and shooting 37 of 73 from 3, 50.3%
Jared Butler 35 of 72, 48%
And there’s still other unsigned free agents that can shoot well like Ben mclemore
Remember that early season game winner he hit from the corner
So tight
Thought he is the quarterback for the Colts?
I thought I was on the Pro Football Rumors page for a minute there.
Wolves won a tough game without KAT yesterday. Looked pretty good with Gobert in the middle. Wolves gotta do something about KAT/Gobert. This exercise has gone on long enough to figure out the team is not more competitive than it was last season.
