Every trade deadline features at least a small handful of deals that are exclusively about money rather than players, and this season’s deadline likely won’t be any different, writes Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report. Pincus suggests the Sixers are one team worth keeping a close eye on for a possible financially motivated trade.
Philadelphia is just barely over the luxury tax line, so moving a player like Jaden Springer or Shake Milton to sneak under that threshold would save a ton of money for the team. Not only would the Sixers avoid paying a small tax bill in that scenario — they’d also be one of the non-taxpayers that receives a portion of the league-wide tax payments at season’s end. Pincus has estimated that each non-taxpayer will get a share of about $17MM, based on the current tax projections.
Here are a few more highlights from Pincus’ latest look at the trade market:
- Although the Pistons‘ front office has downplayed the likelihood of a Bojan Bogdanovic trade, Pincus hears from “well-placed” sources that Detroit may simply be waiting for an offer with a “suitable” first-round pick. Presumably, a suitable first-rounder would be one that doesn’t include heavy protections and has a chance to land in the teens or higher.
- While there has been no indication they’re pursuing him, some rival executives think the Mavericks should be targeting Knicks guard Immanuel Quickley, Pincus writes.
- Pincus identifies Magic center Mohamed Bamba as a possible trade candidate to watch, since his role has declined due to Paolo Banchero‘s arrival and Bol Bol‘s emergence. Bamba’s 2023/24 salary is non-guaranteed, so his two-year, $20.6MM contract is relatively team-friendly.
- The three-team trade talks the Suns had with the Bucks and Rockets about a possible Jae Crowder trade expanded to include the Warriors, who are among the teams with interest in Crowder, says Pincus. However, nothing came of those discussions.
Pincus has to stop. I understand he has nothing of substance. But who nameless rival executives believe that DAL should be pursuing is no more meaningful than who these executives are acquiring for their fantasy teams.
You do realize it’s his job right?
No, it’s not. Journalism 101. Unnamed sources are NEVER cited for their opinions. Of course, I don’t know what his job description is, but nor do you.
I seriously doubt the rules of “journalism 101” apply to sports rumours reporting.
Might not apply to any reporting any longer. FWIW, I don’t think a MAV’s FO guy’s opinion on what another team should do (vs what he hears they are doing or might do) is really a rumor. But, perhaps others do.
I highly doubt the Suns will trade him within the western conference. It would make no sense unless its a big over pay for them.
I really feel like the Lakers should have tried to do a sign-and-trade of Bamba for THT rather than get Patrick Beverly. Young, energetic defender with a good shooting touch who could absolutely play alongside AD, rather than a cranky washed-up guy who can’t produce offense.
Energetic & bamba is like water & vinegar.
Mattise really help his trade value yesterday.
In what seemed like his first start and first lot of meaningful minutes came in for the injured DAnthony Melton. Obviously they liked Meltons defence in the starting unit and instead of going to Shake, went to Mattise for that reason.
Mattise got 22 minutes, scored 15 points shooting 5/7 from the floor, 3/4 from behind the arc. He held DeAaron Fox to 5/15 from the floor, 1/7 from deep and only 13 points in 29 minutes. Fox this season has been great too, averaging 22 points per game shooting 50 from the floor and 35% from three which for him is great.
He was a huge reason we got the win today and those kind of performances will earn him a lot more minutes and open the eyes of other executives around the league.
I love the idea of him and Tucker on the floor, 1 guy locking up a guard and the other locking up a wing or forward and then obviously Embiid able to do this thing too. But having the two elite on ball defenders can really take away the oppositions two best offensive players and that can cause all sorts of problems. Then you go down the other end of the floor and you have two of the best offensive weapons with Harden and Embiid. Not many can stop Harden when he’s going and even less can keep up with Embiid.
Really loving the progression of this team through the season.
Very important for Philadelphia is also that they would avoid being a repeat tax offender in the near future.
This way they can go heavily into the tax area the next three seasons.
Sounds like they could be dog whistling the Lakers to drop the. Protections ( hope )
Lakers should if indeeed so, * and I’ve been an adamant no to almost all laker projected trades to this point
bevv nunn jones for bojan matches up perfectly tho I see the merits in Det still holding and def a chance a better package comes along in the meantime –
Sounds like the writer may be underselling his future market a tad here as well ; I’d think it be bustling if made avail but I’d put the 27” unprotected on the table today if I was Pelinka to see if i could get a bite
* tomorrow as it’s the 15th !
I’m a Lakers fan who lives in Detroit. I don’t think the 27 first round pick gets it done. I think there are other teams who will be willing to give up a better pick in an earlier draft.
I can see that too
