The Pelicans are among the teams to reach out to the Hawks about forward John Collins, according to Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report. Haynes hears from sources that those discussions were merely preliminary, however.
A report earlier this month stated that Atlanta had previously pitched the idea of a Collins trade involving Trey Murphy and one of New Orleans’ many first-round picks. It’s unclear whether the Pelicans are open to that sort of package — if so, they would need to add more outgoing salary, with Devonte’ Graham looking like a prime candidate to be dealt.
According to Haynes, the Hawks remain comfortable with the idea of keeping Collins on their roster beyond the trade deadline if they don’t get an offer they like.
Here’s more from Haynes:
- The Trail Blazers are “intensely engrossed” in seeking further upgrades for their roster and are open to listening to a wide variety of ideas, league sources tell Bleacher Report. Portland has struggled since getting off to a hot start, but remains focused on making the playoffs this season and has no plans to tank, Haynes adds.
- The Celtics are in the market for another frontcourt player and will try to add a big man in the buyout market if they’re unable to trade for one at the deadline, Haynes writes. Boston isn’t necessarily seeking an impact player, but Robert Williams has dealt with injuries in the past year and Al Horford is 36 years old, so the team would like a reliable insurance policy.
- Raptors point guard Fred VanVleet has parted with his representatives at Par-Lay Sports & Entertainment and will hire a new agent soon, league sources tell Haynes. The timing of the move is noteworthy, since VanVleet is likely headed for unrestricted free agency this summer and has been mentioned as a possible trade candidate.
Derrick Rose, Evan Fournier, Cam Reddish, Jericho Sims, DAL’s 2023 1st & NYK’s 2026 lottery protected 1st to Toronto for OG Anunoby & Gary Trent Jr… works for both teams, especially if the Raps can convince Pooh to come to Canada & back up Freddie
Are you insane? Raptors are asking for 5 picks/swaps for OG on his own.
That seems clearly more insane than the offer I proposed. What are your specific issues with the offer? You think NYK isn’t giving up enough?
OG is worth more than this and Trent is worth at a FRP+
Aye if I’m Toronto I’m gladly taking 2 mid 1sts, Cam, Fournier & Sims for OG & Trent. They’d get $20M+ in cap space. They get a young, long, talented wing that could potentially slide into the 2guard spot in Cam. They get a seasoned vet in Fournier who could be a 6th Man/secondary facilitator when Freddie or Scottie come off the floor. They upgrade 1 of their main weaknesses by bringing JSims & his strength/athleticism onto their frontcourt rotation with Precious/Koloko/Boucher. They also get 2 1sts, 1 this yr & 1 in a few yrs. If they talk Rose into coming to Toronto they strengthen their pg position as well… Trent seems like he’s otw out this summer. OG is obv a versatile, talented forward but I mean 5 1sts for him I’d obv ridiculous. Even 3 is pretty ridiculous to me. Hawks gave up what’s probably gonna end up being 2 1sts & 2 2nds for Dejounte & he was an actual all-star & people somehow consider that an overpay lol. Dejounte had 2yrs left on his deal, OG will have less than 1.5yrs left on his
NYK FO likes OG, but wouldn’t value Trent as a 2nd piece. So leave Trent out (he’s more a contender rental anyway). I would do OG for Fournier and Reddish, and any 3 non-NYK 1st’s (their pick of DAL, WSH, DET or MIL).
NYC needs a contender rental. They’re trying to be contenders… but if I’m Toronto I’m definitely taking that deal u offered…. again it should definitely make you pause to know that you’re giving up more for OG Anunoby than the Hawks just gave up for Dejounte Murray
No, the last thing they need a pricy rental after paying a high price for a guy like OG. Adding him to RJ, Grimes and IQ, we’d have more than enough on the wings.
I think ATL gave up more value for Murray. They gave up 2 unprotected picks, and an unprotected swap. I’m not giving up any. Murray might be the better player, OG is true combo F, and might carry a higher trade value.
Trent is better than Grimes & IQ tho. Knicks need to upgrade in talent if they wanna contend. Trent & OG would represent that. Tbh adding OG wouldn’t be enough & it definitely wouldn’t be more than enough… as far as what Atl gave SAS, true the picks are unprotected but the guys we have now (Trae/DJ/Dre/JC/O/AJ/JJ) are gonna be squarely in their prime when it’s time to give up those picks. Chances are high they’re gonna be in the 20s or late teens at best. I’d definitely rather have 3 picks in that range than 2. And the swap is highly unlikely to be a factor at all unless SA drafts Wembo… Also Murray is a true 2way combo guard who can run a team as it’s pg. That’s definitely more valuable than a combo forward. Especially considering the fact that Murray is just a better basketball player than OG. Plus we got 2 seasons of Dejounte before we have to resign him. OG will only have just over 1season with his new team before he’s a free agent
Trent is a fully developed 3 and D player, nothing more. So, he’s not necessarily a better player than Grimes or IQ even now, and, even if he is, it won’t be for long. In any event, no team walks away from guys like Grimes and IQ, who are controllable young players making less than 5 mm combined. Not enough? There are 96 wing minutes in a game. Whether you like our 3 guys or not is irrelevant, they can more than handle those minutes alone (have done it with a record 5 gams over .500) and with OG would be more than enough. Math.
If you like ATL’s actual Murray trade better than my hypothetical trade, great. There’s logic of giving up unprotected picks betting that a rising team will make them pedestrian picks. But there’s obviously another side to that bet. I don’t think either side made a bad deal.
On the positional value, you’re just mistaken, but that’s permitted if you want to stay in that place. Numbers with $$ don’t lie, across the league. Look on your own roster, would Hunter have gotten the deal he got if he were a PG with the same quality? Since you’re fighting reality, I’ll answer it for you. No.
GTJ is definitely better than Grimes & IQ rn. That’s pretty obvious. To say he’s nothing more than a 3&D guy is ridiculous too. Below is footage of him cooking Milwaukee for 28 last week, scoring in almost every way. Grimes will probably never be as good as Trent is now but either way Trent def makes NYK a better team rn & that’s what they should be looking to do at the trade deadline… also Ant Simons, Jalen Brunson & JMurray got way more than Dre bc lead guards are obv the most valuable players in the league… link to m.youtube.com
@Sankara – There are basic elements of team building that you don’t understand if you think its anything but laughable that the NYK would bench Grimes and/or IQ for the privilege of giving up 1st round pick(s) to rent Trent, or, worse, sign Trent and end any further rebuilding of the team.
The hierarchy of positional value is also not in dispute in terms of where FO’s currently stand across the league, but, at the end of the day, it is fluid and a matter of opinion.
Feel free to explain these basic elements that I’m not understanding… lol so the hierarchy of positional value (wha?) is fluid, a matter of opinion & also not in dispute? I named 3 non all-star pgs that got bigger deals than Dre. Hold this L
You might be willing to do that deal but Toronto won’t be. Again Raps wont be taking the garbage players like Fournier or Reddish. I don’t think you understand how little both of these players have in terms of value. The Raps value OG and would only move him for a massive return. The dude is only 25 and won’t be traded for garage
Obviously I don’t see Cam or Fournier as garbage. I don’t see Rose that way either. All 3 of those guys could help Toronto alot tbh. Just for a second, don’t go off of what someone else values them. I’m hopeful that you’ve seen those guys play this yr or last. Think beyond what the narrative is & just focus on those 3 guys as basketball players. It should be sorta obvious how they could add value to the Raps on the court. Same with young Sims in the paint. On the other side I can def understand why Toronto would wanna keep OG’s value as high as possible but lol I mean come on the Knicks still prob a play-in team even with him. He’s a good forward no doubt but I can already see Knicks fans turning on him lol he’s not as great as he’s being made out to be, specifically on this site lol… link to m.youtube.com
Fournier contract is garbage which in turns makes having him in this trade a no go. NYK couldn’t give him away right now with out taking back an equally bad contract or attaching a protected 1st. Cam Reddish was highly regarded in terms of value but he not now after fizzling with Knicks so far. dude has skills but can’t show what he has at the NBA level consistently.NYK probably can maybe get a late first .. though it would most likely be 2nd at best for him now. So the two of them are at best 0 value but probably negative value on how highly you regard Cam…the pick return would have to be 3-4 unprotected picks and swaps along when them. If you follow how Masai has made trades in the past he will be looking for a guy like Barrett as the centre piece or the Raps would take a better offer from another team for that hypothetical trade.
Legit, this a terrible trade return for OG and Gary. There is no way as well the would take back Fournier’s horrible contract without additional compensation. Now having a deal start with RJ Barrett , Obi Toppin plus draft picks might get er done from Toronto end.
I haven’t seen any media reported/created offers that come anywhere near JC’s value. And I’m hard pressed to come up with any JC trade offers that make sense for both teams either tbh. If we could upgrade at the 4 I’d be interested in trading John but Trey Murphy & a 1st ain’t gonna get it, Beasley & Vando ain’t gonna get it & Crowder ain’t gonna get it either. The Hawks are 4-0 when everybody is healthy & available. I’d rather swap a couple 2nds for a wing defender like Cam or Matisse or KJ Martin & then flip Frank for Ibaka than move JC for anything less than an overpay. He’s obv wanted by a lot of teams
The Blazers aren’t trading for John Collins. They have Little, and he is paid more appropriately. Collins isn’t worthless, but the fit on the blazers is terrible. Zach Collins could help though. The blazers need a big man beyond Eubanks to back up Nurkic, and Grant. Watford showed alright, but Little, Sharpe, and Payton are the go to bench guys, and that’s it in Portland. They should be looking at 2 for 1’s, and any other deal that will give them another quality, rotation, depth addition. If not wait until the draft. They’re solidly in the lottery currently, and there is value in the 1-14 picks.
Simons needs tons of work, and needs more ice cream seasons before teams covet his inconsistent shooting, and half-hearted defense. Draft now, win later. A back-up point guard would be a luxury, but also needed in portland. Pat Beverly would fit if not getting paid $13 million.
Lillard can win in his twilight coming off the bench when the team is finished being built properly. If that is even possible in Portland.
This is a terrible take on many levels. I’d agree on Collins, buts that’s about it. There is no way on God’s green earth that the Blazers are going to bring Zach Collins back. Just not going to happen.
Solidly in the lottery? You do realize that they are 2 games out of 6th place in the west. Not sure how that’s solidly in the lottery.
Simons is in his first full season as a starter and playing a majority of his minutes with Dame. Not sure how a 23 year old averaging 21.9 points and averaging career high numbers across the board minus 3pt % need more whatever the hell your ice cream seasons are. Does he have room to improve? Sure. But let’s not pretend that he’s a hot pile of garbage with no hope for improvement.
One thing is certain. There are a sh*t ton of Raptors fans. Every site seems to always include a Raptors rumor or update these days and it has been that way for years now. Having an entire country mostly follow one team can have it’s advantages.
