The Hawks are trying to trade forward John Collins, but there’s one big obstacle — opposing teams don’t view his contract as having positive value, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN (video link).
“John Collins has been at the center of their trade talks,” Wojnarowski said on NBA Countdown. “… Starting next year, (he’s) still owed another $25 million a year, essentially $75 million over the next three years. I think that’s been a hindrance in the trade market. There are some teams, such as Utah, that would like a draft pick with Collins to offset that money.
“Landry Fields, the new general manager in Atlanta, he does not see John Collins as a money dump.”
While Wojnarowki’s report isn’t new information, it’s still interesting to hear him use the word “hindrance” to describe Collins’ deal. He’s technically owed $78.5MM over the next three years after this one, including his $26.6MM player option for 2025/26.
Collins’ situation is reminiscent of Tobias Harris‘ with the Sixers — both are quality players, so their current teams can’t afford to just get rid of them while attempting to win, but opposing teams don’t like their contracts. Harris makes more money and only has one more year left on his deal, but still, the parallels are pretty obvious.
Wojnarowski went on to say that talks should pick up steam closer to the deadline, and like Dallas, Atlanta is expected to be “really active” in looking for roster upgrades.
Collins and Harris are both good players, and good players get paid a lot in the nba even if they aren’t true max players. Neither team is in a rebuild so my guess is both stay with their teams unless they get moved for each other if they can even out the money.
Collins hasn’t been the same since the PED suspension.
The NBA only allows Lebron James to piss dirty, and pass. John Collins doesn’t have the “star power” to make people look the other way quite the same.
Riiight.
So true.
Do you have proof of this or are you just making baseless claims?
You are absolutely right
So Hawks overachieved two yrs ago. And now are redoing their team. Not easy to build a contender.
2022-23 record is 23-22
2021-22 (43-39) lost in 1st rd 4-1.
2020-21 (41-31) lost in East Finals.
1 injury to 1 player can blow up any rebuilders plans in a heartbeat. Look at Chicago, and even Minnesota. Both thought they made teams to compete, when all they really did was shoot themselves in the foot.
Yeah but Hawks had plenty of picks. And signed FAs. And have real talent. But you need chemistry too.
Chicago made the right moves they were winning with Ball. He is just hurt. I hope they don’t blow it up. We shall see.
No they made some smart moves and some terrible ones. Trading Vucevic for Carter and two picks was a terrible move.
What happened to that Hawks dynasty?!?! Ahahahha I tried to tell you all. Stop signing these bad contracts! Most of these nba players are role players that hve 1-2 good seasons and get over paid.
“tell us all”?
I can only think of one person who was talking about a Hawks dynasty, and he is a known loon.
LOL. You might actually have me on that point! Dude is rather consistent in his ridiculousness.
Collins was his guy too. Hawk Homer is hiding out.
Knicks go there tmrw. Seems we play better on road.
His contract plays into it, of course, but the salary per year under a contract signed a year and a half ago can’t be the real issue.
The problem is that Collins has been trending down as a player almost since the contract was signed, and a suitor would be betting upon that reversing itself. ATL may not consider him a salary dump candidate, but most of the teams kicking the tires on him are not the typical deadline buyers (generally contenders), and look more like a list of salary dump buyers.
Trae and Young put up half the teams shots a game, then you have Hunter and even Bogie ahead of him for touches. No wonder his numbers have gone down. On a more balanced team with an unselfish point guard Collins would show what he can really do again.
Concerning Collins contract versus trade value.
I mean these are really bad takes imo. Nuance and context is king. It’s not an all or nothing proposition. His contract does not have to either be a positive, or a salary “dump”.
Its not an if your not first, your last ricky Bobby. He can have half contract value, 75%, 20%. Damn.
Imo Collons worth is probably ~75% vs his contract to some other teams. Yep he’s overpaid, but still does not have to be dumped. Based just upon the total dearth of good PF. More than half of all teams seem to be unhappy with their current PF. Half teams have other overpaid players (especially pf) to make a trade sensible.
Maybe its just the usual spin teams do. We want full value. Well the other considers it no value.
WTF Atlanta. Choose Miami or Utah and trade Collins! You’re hurting your team by keeping him.
Landry Field is delusional
