JANUARY 25: The Kings have officially extended both McNair and Wilcox, the team announced late on Tuesday night in a press release.
“Monte is an integral part of this organization, and I am thrilled to announce his extension,” team owner Vivek Ranadivé said in a statement. “Since joining the Kings, Monte and Wes have proven to be thoughtful and strategic decision makers who have shown their ability to execute a long-term vision for the team. The work continues, and I have confidence in this front office to keep driving our efforts forward.”
JANUARY 24: The Kings and general manager Monte McNair have reached an agreement on a contract extension, sources tell Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Sacramento is also finalizing a new contract for assistant GM Wes Wilcox, Wojnarowski adds.
According to Sam Amick of The Athletic (Twitter link), McNair is signing a three-year extension with no options.
Marc Stein reported in December that there was a growing expectation in NBA circles that McNair, who was in the final year of his contract, would sign an extension as soon as January, and now that has come to fruition.
“I’ll just say my family loves it in Sacramento and we’re very happy with how things are going,” McNair told Jason Anderson of The Sacramento Bee last month. “We’re just focused on winning and continuing to keep this thing growing.”
At 27-19, the Kings are currently the West’s No. 3 seed and are in a strong position to snap their 16-year playoff drought, which is an NBA record. The McNair-led front office drafted and then later traded rising point guard Tyrese Haliburton to Indiana for All-Star center Domantas Sabonis, and selected guard Davion Mitchell in the 2021 draft.
In the 2022 offseason, the Kings drafted forward Keegan Murray, who has made an immediate impact, traded for sharpshooter Kevin Huerter and added sixth man Malik Monk in free agency. The franchise also hired head coach Mike Brown, who has helped change the culture of the previously dysfunctional organization.
Remember how bad yall talked about this guy when he passed on Ivey & when he traded Haliburton? You’d think that would make em pause when it comes to hating on guys.
We don’t remember. Must have been one of your other usernames.
Yeah, I definitely have no recollection of hating on Monte McNair. I must have been drunk.
Nope, I have no recollection of this.
Upon further consideration you’re right Sankara. I remember that day just like it was Feb. 7th 2022. After reading about the trade on this very site I remember thinking to myself….”I completely loathe this Monte McNair guy. He’s the scourge of the Earth. It’s as if someone took all the worst traits of Putin, Kim Jong-un and Charles Manson and put them in one man. My hatred for this man knew no bounds. How can this get any worse? Then of all the atrocities he could commit the scumbag had the gall to draft Keegan Murray!”
Yeah, I remember now too. I kind of blocked it out because I ended up kicking my dog.
I was so mad.
Yeah, but isn’t this the same dog who agreed with McNair on taking Davison Mitchell over Ziaire Williams? If so I can’t blame you.
Nobody cared about Sacramento enough to hate on them. I think the majority felt like they had a real shot to sneak into the back end of the playoffs. They are more than on track for that.
@Sankara – Shall we talk about the train wreck also known as the Atlanta Hawks????
Monte McNair and Wes Wilcox are doing a great job in the front office and deserve the extensions. Mike Brown was a great hire as Head Coach. The starting lineup is put together well. I think they will send two All Stars to Utah. Domantas Sabonis and De’Aaron Fox should be All Stars this season. Keegan Murray has been the third best rookie this season. Harrison Barnes and Kevin Huerter been playing their roles very well. Malik Monk was a great pickup.
Literally not one person who knows ball thought the Kings were taking anyone but Murray. And as far as the Halliburton deal goes, Kings are extremely lucky that the Hawks didn’t value Red Velvet and the Pistons didnt value Lyles. Reese is one the best players in the league, and certainly the biggest impact on a team playing well above its perceived talent. The deal worked out for everyone, doesnt make it less of a bruise on the franchise
Monte has to be the Executive of the Year and Coach Brown Coach of the Year if the Kings make the playoffs, let alone as a top 4 seed
Sabonis is amazing big. The Pacers won the trade but the Kings have a winner in Fox. He can take a buzzer beater for me.
It seems like a pretty even deal to me at this point, tipping in the Kings favor because they’re actually winning. Both Sabonis and Halliburton are great for their respective teams.
Very close trade, Kings look like they’re winning it now, we’ll see how it looks in a few years.
Pacers won the trade? Halliburton is amazing, but Sabonis is the league’s leading rebounder, third in triple doubles, and the perfect fit for the Kings. Kings were also able to unload Buddy’s contract and have room to pick up Huerter and sign Monk. A win, win? Sure…
Glad the Kings were able to get this done. Monte has made nothing but great moves so far. I still can’t believe the team is doing as well as it is. Somebody pinch me… I’m not used to nice things
Happy for you and all Kings fans. Always loved the vibe of the fans during their heyday in the early 00s. They deserve a good team again.
Cheers mate, appreciate it!
Both teams won the trade. Pacers were looking to rebuild (Haliburton). Sacramento wanted to try and compete immediately (Sabonis).
ya crazy good season so far, 1st in double doubles, 8th in assists & top 10 in FG % too.
Somewhere Grant Napier is smiling.
Trade Holmes, Davis and Metu for a starting center and a SG prospect with a expiring contract possibly
PG. Fox SG. Kevin H SF Barnes/Murray PF. Sabonis/Barnes C. ?/ Sabonis. Let Barnes contract expire. Draft a SG or C if need be
Or Spurs trade JP and to GS Anderson to Kings. Warriors trade Wiseman to Kings. Kings trade Holmes and Davis plus two first to the Spurs
Who do the Warriors get in this trade or do we just give away our roster for nothing?
JP
Spurs trade JP to GS. Richardson* (sorry)to Kings. Warriors trade Wiseman to Kings. Kings trade Holmes Davis and 2 1st rd picks to Spurs and a 2nd to GS.
