If the Raptors become sellers at the trade deadline, what could they get in exchange for Fred VanVleet or Gary Trent Jr.? How about Pascal Siakam or OG Anunoby? Eric Koreen comes up with hypothetical trades for all four players in a pair of articles for The Athletic, and his colleagues evaluate whether opposing teams would accept them.
Jovan Buha believes the Lakers would agree to a deal for VanVleet if the Raptors wanted Patrick Beverley, Kendrick Nunn, Max Christie and a 2027 first-round pick. As for the team’s All-NBA forward, Joe Vardon thinks the Grizzlies would package Tyus Jones, Danny Green, Jake LaRavia, Ziaire Williams, 2023, 2025 and 2027 first-round picks, a 2024 first-rounder (via Golden State), and a 2024 second-rounder (via Toronto) in exchange for Siakam.
Here’s more on the Raptors:
- The Raptors’ current front office has generally drafted well, and they have done exceptionally well in trades, but they have not had success in free agency, and Otto Porter Jr. is the latest example of that, according to Josh Lewenberg of TSN.ca. Lewenberg points out that the Raptors have operated over the salary cap for several years, which limits their ability to sign pricier free agents, but the list of players the team has signed in the past several years is “uninspiring.” Porter is out for the season after undergoing foot surgery.
- Scottie Barnes has had an inconsistent second season, but he’s played better of late, Lewenberg writes for TSN.ca. “He’s just settling in,” Siakam said after Thursday’s 124-114 win over Charlotte. “I see the confidence. He’s not forcing anything, he’s just playing basketball the way that he knows how to and it’s showing. I think that sometimes we get so caught up in the numbers and what people are expecting from [us]. You’ve just got to go out there and play, and I think he’s starting to understand that.” If Toronto is able to turn things around in the second half of the season, Barnes will likely be a big reason why, according to Lewenberg.
- Precious Achiuwa missed a significant portion of the season with an ankle injury, but he’s helped stabilize the second unit since he returned to action, per Doug Smith of The Toronto Star. The third-year big man is still working on his conditioning, but head coach Nick Nurse praised his aggression on Thursday. “I really liked the way Precious took the ball to the basket,” Nurse said. “He didn’t get a ton out of it, but that will come. I mean, he got one (foul call), maybe. He got another one where he got clobbered but (didn’t get the call); I like it. If he keeps going in there, he’s going to get rewarded and get a dunk or get to the free-throw line a little bit. I like the aggressiveness.”
*gasp* i laugh at vardon’s proposed trade for siakam!
Don’t know if I’d laugh at that proposal as it’s a decent place to start. If I were Ujiri I’d want a little more than four 1sts that will most likely land in the bottom of their drafts, a 2nd, a washed vet, a backup point guard, and a couple young guys that have shown a little promise for a two time All-NBA point forward/center in his prime.
I’d take that return for siakam
That Pascal deal is just ridiculous, 4 players, 4 first round picks and a second round pick.
Why they already have Jaren Jackson at PF, and Steven Adams at centre. And I don’t want to hear anything bad about bug Steve he’s a huge part to their success with his screens and rebounding and not to mention his locker room presence.
That would just be a stupid move on their part.
Making a big splash for OG makes a ton more sense for them considering DBrooks is a FA and has been filling g in at SF.
Ja Bane OG JJJ Adams that’s a solid team there. OG would be huge for them on defence and offensively he’s pretty good too and I think in that culture with that staff he’d be an all star in no time and make them a serious serious contender.
Don’t get me wrong OG would be a very good fit but Siakim is 6’9, 230 pounds and very athletic. He can play the 3 with Adams on the floor and the 4 or 5 when they have to go smaller in the post season. He can run the offense when Morant inevitably misses stretches of the season. He’s also two time All-NBA and in his prime, that kind of package is what you give up for a player of his caliber.
Yeah I suppose that is the price but I don’t think it’s a good move for Memphis. They have this young team with good culture and your trading our a third of the locker room and most your future picks for a guy in a position you don’t need. Like he’s he has a good size and skill set but if your going to give up that much your going someone who perfectly fits a need and works seamlessly. It’s just like how the TWolves gave up a third of their team and all there picks for a centre when they already have a centre. Yes KAT can move to the 4 with his skill and skill set but it’s hardly ideal and you’ve clearly seen the affect of that.
That’s why I suggest OG instead he fits perfectly as a SF, elite defender and solid 3rd or 4th option on offence. You’d give up half as many picks and players and he fits perfectly into the line up and fills the role perfectly. With the right coaching and stuff could easily be an all star level talent, giving Memphis potentially 4 all stars. As for the playmaking Banes assits numbers have really improved and OG has good assist numbers too, not to mention Tyus has been great when called up to start.
Think your the raptors no matter who you move be it FVV GTJ OG or Siakim I think whatever you get needs to be built around Scottie Barnes and the future or picks which can be used or flipped to build around him.
For example if you did go OG to Memphis for Danny Green, LaRavia and Chandler plus 2 future firsts. Straight away deal FVV the 2 first from Memphis and 2 first of your own for SGA.
Then you have SGA Scottie and Siakim as your big 3. Resign GTJ for the shooting and defence, let Otto, Thad and Green all leave in FA and look to bring in a vet centre to share time with Precious and a vet SG to help Chandler run the second unit and challenge GTJ for minutes. LaRavia, Banton etc all compete for back up 3 minutes
It’s a trade you make when you’re trying to win now.
“Nope.”
-Memphis
That’s quite a lot for Siakam.
If you’re not dealing 4 1sts and a 2nd maybe you can have a convo. Siakam isn’t a 26pt scorer on Memphis – he’ll be like 17-18ppg. It will be the Tobias Harris situation. If it was like 2 1sts a 2nd, and some meh players sure.
Suns would make sense too in a swap for Ayton. Siakam + Boucher for Ayton, Crowder, Payne, and a 1st.
The Gobert trade aside, who is giving up 4 1sts for a non-No.1 or No.2 option? Dejounte Murray only netted 3 1sts, swaps don’t really count a whole lot.
Tobias and Pascals situations arent comparable.
Pascal was the #2 option when they won in 2019 and he’s only gotten better.
I think Lowry was the #2, Siakam was # 3.
Siakam was the #2, Lowry was the #3
Swaps very much count
Quality over quantity and they give you a chance every year to strike big
Siakim is not getting traded. they won’t get anything for Trent Jr. or OJ though they are good players.. that leaves Fred Van Vleet. Not sure what I would offer for him, a solid player , good scorer but just too short for this NBA today.. will be interesting.
Don’t hear much about FVV betting on himself anymore…
He already won the bet, handily.
