The league has announced its 2023 All-Star reserves during a pregame broadcast on TNT, as voted on by NBA head coaches. As usual, the list of 14 selections featured some interesting surprises.
For the Eastern Conference, coaches voted in Sixers center Joel Embiid (the reigning Player of the Month in the East), Heat center Bam Adebayo, Bulls wing DeMar DeRozan, Celtics wing Jaylen Brown, Bucks guard Jrue Holiday, Pacers point guard Tyrese Haliburton, and Knicks forward Julius Randle.
Holiday, who is making his second overall All-star appearance this year, last earned an All-Star nod a decade ago while playing for Philadelphia.
Randle will receive a $1.2MM salary bonus as a result of being named an All-Star this season, according to Bobby Marks of ESPN (Twitter link). Marks adds (via Twitter) that Holiday will get a $324K bonus. And as long as he appears in at least 65 contests this year, Brown will earn a $1.55MM bonus after having qualified for the All-Star game, Marks tweets.
Among the most notable omissions in the East were a handful of point guards: the Knicks’ Jalen Brunson, the Hawks’ Trae Young, the Cavaliers’ Darius Garland, and the Sixers’ James Harden. Miami swingman Jimmy Butler also missed out. Young, Harden and Butler all made the cut last season.
In the Western Conference, Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant, Kings center Domantas Sabonis, Thunder point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Clippers forward Paul George, Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard, Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen, and Grizzlies big man Jaren Jackson Jr. were selected as reserves.
Being named to the All-Star team again this year will earn Sabonis a $1.3MM bonus, per Marks (Twitter link).
Lakers center Anthony Davis, Kings point guard De’Aaron Fox, Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards, Suns guard Devin Booker, and Nuggets forward Aaron Gordon were among the Western Conference snubs.
Gilgeous-Alexander, Markkanen and Jackson are the lone first-time All-Stars among these 14 picks.
All-Star weekend tips off on February 17 in Salt Lake City. Los Angeles power forward LeBron James and Milwaukee power forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, the captains of their respective conferences, will draft their teams ahead of the 2023 All-Star Game on Sunday, February 19.
Because Aaron Gordon lobbied hard for himself does not mean he was snubbed. He wasn’t close. The others you could certainly make a case for.
Aaron Gordon is tired of dunking.
Gordon easily the biggest snub. A huge reason why the Nuggets are in 1st in the west. Grizzlies having two all stars and Denver only having one is a joke and the typical disrespect we are used to in Denver
What?!?!
I see the sarcasm. Hilarious.
Sure, but that still doesn’t mean he should be an All-Star. Good player having a great year =/ All-Star
Tyrese Haliburton made it as well!
De’Aaron Fox should’ve made it over George. I think they got the rest right.
The rest of the west? Because the East is an absolute mess.
The Kings have shocked everyone by getting to the 3 seed in the West. They deserve to see both Fox & Ox (Sabonis) as All-Stars. Fox in for JJJ, then Gordon subs for Zion…
And I agree with the posts down below that Siakam got jobbed. Swap him & Randle, but then give the Knicks Brunson over DeMar…
Randall deservingly got the reserve pick because he gets double doubles in his sleep and his team has actually played better than the Toronto Raptors who are about to Blow up that underchieving lakeluster squad and Jalen Brunson was the biggest snub he should be heading to the All Star game with Julias Randall and that’s facts. He has single handedly changed the culture of the NY Knicks and he was the best free agent signing this off season in the NBA.
I agree about Fox, and I’d add the omission of Anthony Edwards as a glaring snub
You forgot Pascal Siakam as a notable omission. Seriously. Why are the Raptors (and Toronto) treated as an after thought so often?! Ah the Raps are having a poor season, but Geesh… The man is playing All-NBA level the first half of the season and he doesn’t even make the All-Star team. Sad.
Whoa, Randle over an All-NBA-type player like Siakam? And no mention of him on this article. Def a huge snub. And I agree, Gordon being a snub is a joke.
Randle over Siakam and DeRozan over Brunson. Knicks are where they are because of Brunson’s play.
No Pascal Siakam. Right. What an absolute joke.
Randle over Siakam is literal blasphemy and outright hilarious
Jalen Brunson also needs to be in there IMO. I would have him over DeRozan. But not having Siakam is borderline criminal lol. Randle is a dud.
Looks like siakam lost a coin flip. Brunson, who’s leading his team to the playoffs, should have gotten in over the veteran star on a losing team demar.
Instead they went with the same logic with Randle over siakam. And snubbed Brunson.
Tbh, picking between siakam vs Randle isn’t easy. They’re both deserving of the slot and are both putting up 2nd or 3rd all star numbers. This isn’t a major snub. They’re having similar seasons only Randle team is winning.
Brunsons credentials trump demands by a good margin this year. They could have gone with both Knicks and I wouldn’t have argued against it!
You’re right that it’s close, but look at the offense surrounding Siakam. Scottie was running very hot and cold until his recent streak. OG has missed time again. VanVleet was having a bad year until the last few weeks. And Precious missed significant time. Siakam is the one guy who barely kept them afloat while having to shoulder a massive burden. Meanwhile, the Knicks have been far healthier and guys like Brunson have been showing up nearly every night.
Salute to someone who is speaking facts about both Knicks being deserving.
Randle is a dud, yet Randle and Siakam are averaging very, very similar numbers.
Completely Ridiculous ANT was snubbed
Ridiculous, yet unsurprising sadly.
The disrespect for James Harden is unreal.
Pascal Siakam is the first player in NBA history to average 25+ PTS, 8+ REB and 6+ AST to miss the All-Star Game
That’s a pretty dang compelling point!
It really is a new nba considering the marquee names left off the teams. Changing of the guard.
Can you really consider Trae Young as a “notable omission”?
No the guy sucks
I concur
27-3-10. His numbers blow out most on this list. He also lead the league in total points and assist LY being only the 2nd player ever to do it. as well as assists per game and still nearly 30 a game.
He is one of the best offensive players in the league with ease. He deserves some respect.
But his D is just terrible, hence the omission. Not really a snub but he deserves the credit he’s earnt.
@jw91. Un efficient scorer shooting an awful 32% from 3. The worst defender in the game. His teammates don’t like him. Do I need to go on?
This year he’s been inefficient yes. no argument he’s having a poor shooting season hence the “omission” and I don’t think snub like I said before(mainly because he keeps jacking poor 3pt attempts).
But to say the kid sucks? Cmon man anyone who loves and has eyes for the game knows he’s an offensive machine who still puts up double digit assists with “teammates who don’t like him”.
Murray was clearly a bad fit with him, neither of their fault and both are top players in the own right just not together.
If he demanded a trade today the entire league would be offering everything to get him save the select few that have the possible 5 better OFFENSIVE point guards. I know I’d want him down here.
Off the top of my head id take garland, luka, dame, lebron, chris paul, ja morant, harden, kyrie, haliburton, fox, and i’m sure im forgetting some more people over trae young as far as players that run the point on offense. Even some players that don’t currently run point like murray i’d rather run point than him. He’s not a good pg. Does not make his teammates better.
Lebron ain’t no PG. Garland, CP3, Fox, Hali, are in no way better offensive than Young. All round yeah there’s an argument and I’m sure even they’re likely to contemplate Young over them if they had the opportunity bar Garland.
but going forward which is the point I’m making, short of Dame, Luka, Ja, Steph, Harden and possibly one or two more(SGA for eg)Trae is the best OFFENSIVE PG period.
Just a low efficiency year which is why he lost the AS race(still better than most!). And again we’re going into the wrong thing I’m not saying he’s MVP or anything. I’m making the point he deserves some more respect than “the guy sucks”. Which he 100% does not and watch a scramble if he ever does ask for a trade.
I stopped reading at lebron aint a pg. you got alot to learn mate. It’s ok talk to me in a couple years.
Lol funny kid.
Love halliburton. My bulls should drafted him,not patwill.
Jrue out, Harden in. Halliburton out, Trae in.
Trae Young definitely deserved it going by numbers. More so than Derozan.
Maybe
What numbers are those?
JJ Redick was right, nic Claxton should have but wasn’t gonna. Brunson should have made it over jimmy buckets.
Butler didn’t make it either.
First time ever that the Grizz have had two all stars!
Jaren Jackson missed time in the beginning of the year. That’s a joke
He’s played 2 less games than Curry & 6 more than AD! I agree it’s a big call choosing him. But his DPOTY level D has the argument similar to Rudy in the past. I don’t agree he deserves to be in over some of the others, I’d have said Fox is the bigger snub or even Edwards. But he’s not undeserving of a spot.
There were no snubs. Close calls, but all look like they were decided consistent with prior practices. Keep in mind (before or after the making of mindless assertions) that these are the NBA coaches voting. So its going to be about bottom line merit, not the top line fanboy stuff some you think creates an entitlement. Sorry, but coaches don’t care who’s on what team (unless it’s the one their coaching).
I’m not a Randle fan, but, if its Randle or Siakam, then Randle certainly deserved the slot on the basketball merits. Their top line numbers are basically the same. Neither is a made man in NBA terms. Both matter for coaches, but they’re a wash here. Randle’s biggest edge over Siakam are in the efficiency metrics where both are really subpar. Even Randle’s surprisingly low 53% eFG% looks robust compared to Siakam’s 50%. The other significant edge Randle has is he played in 10 more games. Combining the two, his win-share advantage is significant (6 vs 4.5). Overall team record is just confirming this, doesn’t need to be a separate factor.
Like it or not, no serious basketball coach (or anyone else who actually knows something about the game) is EVER going to think along much different lines than the above. Long before metrics, most coaches had enough basketball knowledge and common sense to get to the same place, at least eventually, and most still do.
EC biggest snub is Harden should have been a starter.
The only other snubs are Siakam & Butler.
I would have kept Jrue, Mitchell & JB out (BTW who has recovered as yet of the joke of JT as a starter ahead of Embiid… no one, right?)
WC biggest snub AD also should have started.
The only other snub is KAT.
I would have kept PG13 & JJJ out.
Injury replacements in the EC…
1/ Vucevic
2/ Mitchell
3/ Trae
Injury replacements in the WC…
1/ Booker
2/ Kawhi
3/ Fox
Fox or Edwards are more deserving than George. He hardly has played the past 4 years after demanding a trade to the LAC.. it doesn’t matter Fox and Edwards are guards. They don’t play defense in the ASG anyway.
Many snubs, Siakam, AE, Fox, Claxton, BUT, Bam got his respect!’phew/ I said before looking at the reserves (Bam got snubbed, huh)? The problem is there are too many guys who deserve to be All Stars that there will always be an argument. But yea, some guys who didn’t make it should have and we know they will get added with guys dropping out due to a sore spot on their bodies.
Jimmy Butler missing out is a travesty.
