FEBRUARY 15, 8:05am: The Cavaliers have officially signed Green, the team confirmed in a press release.
FEBRUARY 12, 3:04pm: The Cavaliers and Green have reached an agreement, according to Wojnarowski (Twitter link). The deal will be worth $2MM for the rest of the season, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports (via Twitter).
That’s more than a prorated minimum-salary contract for Green would be worth, so it’ll come out of Cleveland’s mid-level exception — the team only used a portion of the MLE to sign Ricky Rubio last summer.
The agreement will leave the Cavs’ team salary about $471K below the tax line, tweets Yossi Gozlan of HoopsHype.
FEBRUARY 12, 12:21pm: After reaching a buyout agreement with the Rockets earlier today, free agent swingman Danny Green is “nearing an agreement” to sign with the Cavaliers, his Roc Nation Sports agent and attorney Raymond Brothers informs Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN (Twitter link).
Cleveland, who has needed help stabilizing its small forward position, could benefit from the influence of Green. When healthy, he’s a still-impactful 3-and-D vet who has won three titles for three different clubs.
Woj tweets that Green’s representatives and the Cavs are still sussing out the terms on an agreement.
Green, 35, is recovering from ACL and LCL tears he suffered while in the playoffs with the Sixers last season. He only appeared in three games with Memphis.
For what it’s worth, the 6’7″ wing has tweeted, “It’s not done yet…,” presumably in reference to the impending new contract with Cleveland.
Makes sense, should be a good fit.
I thought he would sign with Boston. Boston has an injured player exception from the Gallo deal and I thought they could offer him more money. Plus he would have a better chance with the Celtics to win a ring
Boston isn’t looking for someone who wants to play every game … they want someone who is ok filling in as needed while being the best fill in around
Lebron’s mentality Dvail
He’d never get to play in Boston. That and the Cav’s are likely to contend for a ring each of the next 3 seasons. Boston is close now if this avalanche of injuries subsides. Still the Buck’s look like the team to beat. He fits the Cav’s rotation better than Boston. Boston seems to prefer playing two 4’s instead of a 3. Or a pair of 2’s with no 3. No one on the Celtics plays the 3 & that is likely not an accident.
Lakers, Philly, Sacramento all would have made sense. Would have been funny for the Lakers to have lucked into him on the wing. I actually also think Memphis was a fit, but they moved him for Kennard, which I thought was questionable
If he is healthy, it’s a great piece for Cleveland, being a true 3 and D wing for them. I think it should slot certain other guys into better spots
Nah. Saw enough of him in Philly before the injury. Nice guy but he’s got little left to give.
I don’t expect Green to play like he did a few years ago, but for someone toward the bottom of the roster he’s a great guy to have. If he can come in for a few minutes and make a shot or two while being able to play some defense and help out the younger guys, I think it’s a pretty good outcome.
Without a medical clearance. I see him coming off the bench. I would have hoped they could have landed Beasley or Crowder. If anything they need a better option at a backup 5 to go deep.
Is he healthy?? I know he’s not in game shape. Well he’ll need time I guess. But it’s a good vet to add to the bench. If he can give 15-20 mins. Here and there, especially for playoffs. This one needs time to sink in imo.
Now the question waiting everyone will Kevin Love be cut loose.
They are keeping Love and Lavert!
F*** yeah! Now let’s get dedmon.
Green used to have defense. On the Sixers guys just blew by him. Those knees don’t seem to work any more. He moves slow up and down the court. I’m glad they got rid of him.
Funny his defensive numbers while with the 76ers were very good. His 2nd year he was not a lock down option like his first year there but his per 100’s are outstanding on defense in his 2 years in Philly. His offensive numbers could have been better.
He got some championship jewelry, now he’s just strengthening his retirement fund, can’t be mad at that
Cavs will be in the ECF
I sure hope so. He seems like a great fit if he is healthy. he’ll have to compete with Okoro & Osman for minutes.
Great signing. If healthy, he’s More than proven. I don’t think His at His peak, but if he can contribute off the bench, between him and Okoro can handle that role. Besides,he can mentor the young guy in how to be an effective 3 and D SF
That’s it
He’s the lucky mascot to bring mojo
