FEBRUARY 14: The Sixers have officially signed Dedmon, the team confirmed in a press release.
FEBRUARY 13: Former Heat center Dewayne Dedmon has agreed to a contract with the Sixers for the rest of the season, tweets ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Philadelphia wasn’t able to find a backup center before last week’s trade deadline, so the team is turning to Dedmon, who has filled that role for numerous clubs throughout his 10-year NBA career. The 33-year-old has played for seven franchises, including an 11-game stint with the Sixers in 2013/14.
Dedmon began this season as the reserve center in Miami, but things turned sour after he lost that role to two-way player Orlando Robinson. In January, Dedmon was suspended for one game after a sideline incident with coach Erik Spoelstra and assistant Caron Butler. He apologized to the team, but only appeared in one game after that confrontation.
Last week, the Heat traded Dedmon to the Spurs along with a 2028 second-round pick in exchange for cash considerations. San Antonio waived him two days later.
Dedmon will try to revive his career in Philadelphia, where management had been seeking a veteran big man to back up Joel Embiid. Dedmon was averaging 5.7 points and 3.6 rebounds with Miami this season in 11.7 minutes per night.
Meh
I guess Noel will have to find somewhere else if he’s bought out, unless the Sixers take a page from another Philly team and bring in two veteran bigs as the Eagles did with Ndamukong Suh and Linval Joseph.
Ya surprised Noel and Drummond were not moved
Ded man walking
I am not understanding this signing. Don’t they have montrez Harrell as a backup? Noel makes more sense than Dedmon.
Harrell is a decent backup big who can provide scoring, rebounding, and energy but the biggest knock on him has always been his defense and that’s why he’s always had to settle for a backup role and never got the big payday he expected after his days with the Clippers. Not saying Dedmon fills that role either but he at least gives them a big with some size behind Embiid to help deal with bigs like Robert Williams, Al Horford, and Brook Lopez.
Noel is still with the Pistons I believe? So likely (A) 76ers didn’t want to wait for Noel and potentially miss out on Dedmon too or (B) 76ers and/or Noel might not have interest in a reunion.
Yeh I believe the thinking with Dedmon is he has 6 fouls per game to use and can rough up opposing bigs who will also be tired from having to guard Embiid.
Dedmon is a decent backup, he will keep getting jobs if he keeps his attitude in check.
Don’t hate the move. They’ve had trouble getting the best buyout candidates anyway, so move fast.
They don’t deserve noel. They already ruined his career once
NO, NO, NO! NN ruined his OWN CAREER when he turned down that 70m contract!
What you are talking about is later in his career but yeah a really bad move not to sign that contract. Dennis Shro is feeling the same as Noel
Could be a solid move, could be waived after a month….
Dedmon atleast plays some defence, has some size, hits his FT’s and has the ability to stretch the floor somewhat. Harrell is definitely more of an impact man and puts up better numbers but he doesn’t play defence and is a little undersized. All we need from the back up centre is rebounds and defence anything else on top of that it’s a bonus.
Dedmon has always been a decent backup. Decent with the rebounds, some craftiness in the paint and can hit that open jumper.
He does foul a whole lot and is in a constant war with the refs and his temper.
Damn was hoping cavs could get him to backup Allen
Not a bad pickup. Decent backup big, already solidified in that role.
