Gary Payton II has failed a physical exam, placing the four-team swap involving the Warriors, Pistons, Trail Blazers and Hawks in jeopardy, Shams Charania and Anthony Slater of The Athletic report.
Payton has a core muscle injury that could sideline him for up to three months, according to the exam by the Warriors’ medical staff.
Though the trade has been announced as official, players still had to undergo physical exams. The Warriors have until Saturday to call the complex trade off, according to Charania and Slater.
In the deal, the Hawks acquired Saddiq Bey from the Pistons; the Pistons acquired former lottery pick James Wiseman from the Warriors; the Trail Blazers acquired Kevin Knox from the Pistons, three second-round picks from Atlanta, and two second-rounders from Golden State; and the Warriors re-acquired Payton from Portland, along with two second-round picks from Atlanta.
Payton’s debut with Portland was delayed until Jan. 2 due to a core muscle injury. He has played regularly since returning to action, including a 22-minute stint against Golden State on Wednesday in which he scored nine points and grabbed three rebounds.
However, Payton has been playing through pain, according to Charania Slater, and that the Blazers training staff has been giving him Toradol shots to help him stay on the court. That information wasn’t relayed to the Warriors during the negotiation process, The Athletic’s duo adds.
The defensive ace was a key member of the Warriors’ championship rotation last season and Golden State felt he could have a similar impact on its bench this season.
According to Charania and Slater, there have been behind-the-scenes discussions on Friday about possibly amending the trade. The amount of parties involved complicates matters.
Tough break for all teams involved
Man Bay Area teams and our physicals
You claiming Reno
Grew up in the Bay Area
If this happens after the trade deadline, are the teams allowed to rework the trade or would it be cancelled? If changes are allowed, can teams still use available TPEs for additional players?
No changes allowed unfortunately. It’s yes or no after the deadline.
non player assets are changeable I believe such as draft assets and cash consideration. I think technically teams could still make player trades as well but they just wouldnt actually be able to suit up until next season. Teams frequently trade expirings between the end of finals and beginning of the new season, and this would be like that now but with the same outcome for when players could report.
Most likely still goes through but probably Warriors keeping at least 2 of the 2nd round picks. Maybe 3 picks if he is out rest of the year.
Trade cannot be changed. It’s as negotiated or nothing.
Rostered players cant change picks are a different animal since they dont happen until the future league years anyways…
Wrong
so the report about “behind the scenes talks about amending the trade” are referring to what?
Draft picks going to Portland
Yeah, I believe the deal will still go through as long as the renegotiated pieces aren’t players. The Warriors being able to keep one or two seconds likely lets this deal stand. I think if GP2 was scheduled to be an FA this summer the Warriors would cancel the trade, but they will still have him for one and possibly two more years.
Yo wake up Warriors ….. you are crazy to give up on Wiseman. Plus he’s worth more than Payton “The Mitten”. This is the basketball gods working in your favor. Believe it.
Its hard for one to improve when one hardly plays. Its a bad sign that he keeps getting hurt while only being in his early 20s. Not good enough to be worth keeping on the team
Getting hurt is a bad sign. But he’s long and thin and a kid. That happens when you play against men. They should be wise and let him mature. His best is yet to come.I truly believe that.
Kerr still thinks JaMychal Green is playing well. The Warriors deserve to lose Wiseman.
It came down to $. Hope Wiseman proves you right.
What has he done between college and the NBA that gives you this belief?
The best description I have come across that encapsulates his problems is that he thinks he is more KD than a screen setting, rolling and rebounding big. Which is completely hampering any chance of him finding playing time anywhere except a poorly run franchise like Detroit currently is.
Warriors shouldn’t do anything, not like they’d be getting anything back they’ll use. Hawks would be screwed over the most
I think the basketball trade line rules should be like baseball rules such as revocable and irrevocable waivers which come into play after trade deadline. Trades are allowed but players need to clear waivers first and if they don’t, original teams can pull players off waivers.
I wish they too!
Baseball actually got rid of the waiver trade deadline a couple years ago.
Waived players can suit up for new teams as long as they sign by the deadline for playoff eligibility.
So if it’s the Warriors holding this up, it’s basically
Ughggh. Strained groin vs 170 million
No. This trade is getting completed. Strained groin or not. 3 months or not,
He’s out till the first week of MAY if it’s 3 months, aren’t the finals in June? Allstar break hasn’t even happened yet
He’ll keep getting pain shots and someone will just get 1 less 2nd.
Not that easy since he may have hurt himself again playing while drug up. So either a amend to the trade or Warriors just keep Knox and the 5 draft picks. If that happens Warrior can explore the trade next year. Portland knew what they were doing.
