Warriors guard Jordan Poole recently spoke with Mark Medina of NBA.com about how he feels he has been performing since signing his four-year rookie contract extension last summer, worth up to $140MM with incentives.
“In order for (Golden State’s front office and ownership) to make a decision like that and for me to make a decision like that, they obviously thought I deserved it,” Poole said. “They like the character that I have, the way I can lead a team and everything else I bring on and off the court. With being able to be me in an organization like this, I try to bring positive energy. I’m grateful and appreciative.”
“I wouldn’t necessarily say there’s pressure. If anything, it’s more exciting to know I’m locked into the Bay for the next five (years),” Poole noted. “We can go through the highs and lows of whatever it is. I embrace that. At 23 years old, it’s a pretty cool challenge.”
Through 58 games for the 29-29 Warriors, the 6’4″ combo guard is averaging career highs of 20.9 PPG and 4.5 APG, along with 2.8 RPG and 0.8 SPG, across 30.7 MPG this season. He’s posting respectable shooting splits of .440/.335/.860 at volume.
Here are a few more interesting quotes from their conversation, which is worth checking out in full:
On his increased role on the team this season:
“It’s cool. I try to do anything I can to try to help the team win. Whenever we’re winning games, I feel like I’m playing better. I’m able to be versatile and play in different situations. I start sometimes. Or I come off the bench and play the 1 or 2. Playing with different lineups adds to my versatility. I’m a big believer in trying to find ways to get better every day, whether it’s watching film, working on something in the gym or asking questions. I always think I’ll find ways to get better, whether I’m playing good or bad.”
On dealing with more defensive attention:
“I’ve loved it, honestly. To get the second team or the (first) team’s best defender and be the main focus of the game plan and coverage is awesome. It’s stuff that you dream about as a kid. I get to ask Steph what he sees and what he went through (earlier in his career). He’s one of the greatest players of all time. He has seen as many coverages, if not more, than some of the greatest players. It’s awesome to blend his perspective into my own personal style of play. It helps me learn and find ways to grow.”
On his future beyond this year:
“I’m trying to learn as much as I can with the greatness I’m around now. With the way basketball and life goes, I may not be on the same team with these guys forever. So, I’m trying to collect as much knowledge as I can. Whether it’s playing without these guys and playing with these guys, I’m embracing everything that I do.”
Riveting…
Glad he got paid though
What makes those shooting splits respectable?
Volume.
Plus he’s pretty chaotic out there. He’s not a spot up shooter in the corner with a three-point percentage of 41%. He’s heaving them off the dribble with a guy on him maybe even two guys. He’s also shooting from great distance at times. He thinks he’s Steph Junior a little too often LOL
Earth to Gary. This is not new. Steve Kerr said this a long time ago. This known for a couple of years now. I pointed it out to you. But, you dismissed it.
Poole is having a respectable season after a terrible start. Still, he needs to cut down on careless turnovers and getting blocked on layups. Hopefully, he will continue to develop playing fundamental team basketball.
Seriously. Everybody knew he would not develop into a starting player. But, now the Warriors are stuck with his Contract.
Overrated ……….
He’s not worth more than Payton.
Career stats. Lookitup
242 gms m, 26.1 mins, pts 15.4, reb 2.6
ast 3.3, fg% .440, ft% .876, 3pt% .339
Those are ordinary numbers. From an ORDINARY guy ……
He was the 28th pick in the draft. I’m not sure what you are expecting when you draft a guy that low in the first round. Not everyone will be JB in every draft. Poole’s PER36 is actually much more impressive than his career stats.
PER 36 he’s at 21.3 PPG/3.6 RPG/5.3 APG/1.0 SPG with a 42/87/34 triple slash line. Defensively he is among the worst at any position. He’s given up 118 points on 100 Possessions for this year. He’ll stick in the league long enough due to the constant need for shooting from the wing spot.
OH and he’s only making $3.9M this year. You could’ve waited until next year to say he’s an ordinary player. Instead of just pulling up stats on probasketballreference and self proclaiming yourself as “you know ball”, maybe you should also look at the contracts and actual stats within the game? Poole’s only 23, his game can still grow, you would know that if “you knew ball”.
Just about anyone’s per36 is more impressive than their career stats.
Not expecting. He’s not worth his contract. Seems like a decent player. Plays no D. But can score. He was a great pick. Still not worth la feria ……
Al somebody would have gave him that money. It’s the way things are going. Warriors did not want to risk going into next year with Steph 35 years old and no one behind him. Lock Poole in now and maybe in 2 years that’s not as much money as it is today? It was a risk they had to take.
You’re probably right. But just me… I’ve would have moved him. Cash in on him now. As opposed to giving away Wiseman.
It’s like the NBA is selling Poole to me lol. Na
No. They should have let Poole become a Restricted Free Agent. Jordan Poole is not Steph Curry.
Ordinary is RJ Barrett.
See if you really cared about ball. You could never say that. Or compare him to o Poole. RJ plays both ways. With 20 pts a gm. Please get help lol.
It’s year 4 and he’s still ineffiecent. He’s not getting better at all.
@knic these people are clueless. Do remember Pete Newell? The guy is the basketball hall of fame.
Rank on who you would pay the most on an open market today
Poole
Clarkson
Kuzma
RJ Barrett
I want to say Kuzma but admit I haven’t seen enough of the other 3 to fully commit on that today
RJ …..
He plays D … the others try.
Even though he may not always have his shot. He never shy’s from shooting. Definitely take RJ. Plus he’s 23
RAPTOR has Barrett as a negative on defense this season.
I think Poole would earn the most but personally I’d choose Clarkson.
RJ isn’t getting a dime. And I need to see Kuzma play meaningful games before I spend money on him.
Only because of age and potential I’d go with Barrett. Clarkson and Poole are chuckers. Kuzma at least tries on defense.
Let’s face facts. Jordan Poole is the worst contract the Warriors have signed in the past 20 years. They could have let him go into Restricted Free Agency. I argued for this. He would have received far less than his current contact. Now the Warriors are hamstrung with Jordan Poole’s contract. They had to trade away Wiseman.
I am so sorry that Wiseman turned out to be one of the worst draft picks ever for Warriors along with guys like Chris Washburn and Russell Cross. We all wanted him to succeed.
I don’t understand it. Jordan Poole is not Steph Curry. The Warriors screwed up when they signed Poole to a long term contract. Poole is a nice player, but he doesn’t have the ability to take over a game like Curry has.
Buddy most players in the NBA don’t have the same ability Steph Curry does lol. Poole was on fire last year and they won a championship. Settle down.
