Following Kyrie Irving‘s trade request on Friday, initial reporting identified the Lakers, Mavericks, and Suns as the point guard’s top potential suitors. Could there be other teams willing to enter the fray and make a play for the Nets star?
Don’t count on the Clippers being one of Irving’s suitors, ESPN’s Zach Lowe said on his latest Lowe Post podcast. Although the Clippers have been linked to some points guards who are considered trade candidates, Lowe and his guest Bobby Marks expressed skepticism that L.A. would have legitimate interest in acquiring Kyrie.
“Everything I’ve heard for a year is leading me to say I would be very, very surprised if the Clippers actually dip their toe into this Kyrie Irving situation,” Lowe said. “Maybe that’ll change if Kawhi (Leonard) goes to them and says, ‘Do this or else’ or whatever. I just don’t get the sense that they have the appetite for it.”
There has been some speculation that the Heat could get involved, but Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald (Twitter links) says Miami won’t be aggressive in its pursuit of Irving. The Heat will monitor the situation and could be a landing spot if Brooklyn gets desperate, Jackson says, but other suitors will likely be more motivated. Jackson adds that Irving “doesn’t exactly fit the qualities” the Heat value in their players, including “reliability, selflessness, (and) putting (the) team first.”
Sam Amick of The Athletic offers up the Jazz as an outside-the-box suitor for Irving, observing that CEO Danny Ainge wouldn’t have the same reservations about Kyrie that some other executives would, even though his time in Boston didn’t necessarily go as planned.
Amick is just speculating though — there’s no indication the Jazz have actually expressed interest in Irving. I’d be surprised if they do, given that the chemistry in the locker room has been a major asset in Utah this season, and Irving may not have any desire to re-sign with the Jazz when his contract expires in the summer.
Here’s more on the Irving situation:
- League sources with knowledge of the Mavericks‘ thinking downplayed Dallas’ chances of landing Irving, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. In the same story, Scotto says the Nets are fans of Mikal Bridges. However, it’s highly unlikely the Suns would be willing to give him up in a deal for Irving.
- Nets owner Joe Tsai was firmly against the idea of offering Irving a maximum-salary extension last summer and that stance hasn’t changed, according to Ian Begley of SNY.tv (Twitter video link). Begley doesn’t specify whether Tsai is only opposed to the idea of a long-term maximum extension for Kyrie or if he’d also be opposed to guaranteeing him the max for one or two years. Either way, the difference in opinions on Irving’s value going forward was clearly the driving factor in his decision to request a trade.
- ESPN’s Brian Windhorst stated on his Hoop Collective podcast that he believes the Nets were surprised by Irving’s trade request, as RealGM relays. A source close to people in the organization who spoke to Steve Bulpett of Heavy.com conveyed a similar sentiment. “People are walking around like, ‘What the f–k just happened?’ It’s crazy,” the source said. “Crazy. But we’ve seen it before there, so nobody should be that surprised. Crazy.” One player source who spoke to Bulpett speculated that Irving’s trade request was a gambit designed to get him the sort of extension he wants.
- After “a few months in the sun,” the Nets find themselves in a familiar place, clouded by chaos, Alex Schiffer writes for The Athletic. Elsewhere at The Athletic, John Hollinger explores what an Irving trade might look like for nine different teams, including extreme long shots like the Pelicans and Bulls.
- Mike Vaccaro of The New York Post argues that the Nets should give Irving the trade he wants and “end the charade” of trying to mollify him in Brooklyn.
I heard Irving wants to take his talents to Israel.
I like Jazz to take on Irving
5 months later, Ainge can sell Irving for 4 future first round picks
Vanderbilt is 1 pick
Beasley is 1 pick
He is an expiring deal, if he resigns you can’t trade him immediately. Why would Kyrie resign for Utah?
Why would Kyrie resign for Utah?
money, contract extension now
Money is underrated by you.
Spencer Dinwiddie, who has been involved in Kyrie Irving trade rumors, is questionable for tonight’s contest due to what the Mavs are calling “rest management.”
I can see this trade go down tonight
“Fake Rest management” players tonight
Dinwiddie
Wood
TJ Warren
Mavs get Irving and Warren
Nets get Dinwiddie and Wood
A mind is a terrible thing.
Sullivan, Irving to Utah isn’t happening. Even if we pretend for a second it somehow could -and does- happen, how on Earth do you think Ainge would get 4 future firsts for him? The Lakers seem to have the most interest and they wouldn’t part with 2 firsts for him, otherwise he’d already have been a Laker by now.
The thing that makes it tough with Kyrie Irving is that he’s basically a rental. Which team would actually trade real assets to aquire him?
The only team willing to do so would be the team that knows they can resign him this summer, and that’s the Los Angeles Lakers. Might have to be a 3 team or 4 team deal to satisfy Brooklyn but I think it’s the Lakers or no one.
The only other slightly possible destination I can imagine is if the Miami Heat decides they need a shot in the arm. Kyle Lowry to the Nets and Kyrie Irving in south Florida. But again Kyrie’s a rental and a big risk.
Agreed. Rental price for even high end players is usually only a protected 1st. KI is perhaps special skill-wise, but he’s also especially high maintenance, and almost not touchable by a team HE doesn’t see resigning with, even if they don’t care.
I see it as a 50/50 chance he is traded. Nets are not going to trade him for nothing and not many teams have anything of value they would give up for him. they are not trading him for Westbrook because he makes $13 million more and would need to 1st rounder for him. To me a AD for Westbrook trade works because LA gets rid of their always hurt star.
That is what makes it tough? Scoff. Forget a season he may never play a game. Suitors…he needs to suit up first. Stick to Indochino or the Brooks Bros Harriman
Surprising words coming from a die hard Jazz fan.
I disagree, him being a rental is a good thing. Who wants Kyrie on a long term contract? It’s actually perfect, you get Kyrie in his little happy period, and then his contract is up before he turns back to Kryrie
Yes I agree with you, it is a good thing. But then the fact remains you’re still not going to give up much as far as assets, which makes this a tough to deal with scenario. I would think Brooklyn wants real assets in return.
What if Tsai decides to be more principled than competitive? What if he keeps KI and lets him finish his contract then refuses to resign him and KI has a lower capped salary? The nets get nothing for losing KI. But the world would see one example of someone not giving in the the demands of players (specifically who has been bad for three different teams while only winning one championship as the 2nd fiddle to the GOAT).
That’d be a great example on how to run off star free agents. Nets will then become Knicks where no stars want to sign because of the clueless owner treating his stars poorly. And by all means Joe Tsai is a very very bad owner.
Tsai firebombed the young Nets team that had promise. He danced with the Devil and let him call the tune. He should calmly declare that Kyrie has chosen to retire. He wont play the rest of the season, and he won’t be paid. Make no effort to resign this prima donna. The lakers free agency offer
Tsai flip flopped like a fish outta water. During COVID he didnt want a part-time kyrie. Harden leaves and we get a part time Kyrie. He said he wouldn’t fire Nash a few weeks later fires Nash. Gonna sit Kyrie for comments until he’s satisfied a few days later instantly satisfied. Tsai is clueless as an owner and should just sell the team
The GOAT was retired before Kyrie was drafted.
Wilt Chamberlain definitely did not play with Kyrie Irving
It’s actually not a bad business decision not to trade him. They need to keep hopes alive for this season for the fans and KD. Kyrie is going to still have to play, or risk getting suspended and further lowering his value.
You can’t lower your value when you are set to become a free agent.
what’s the over/under for games played in utah, before Kyrie decides he wants to go chase UFOs or something? 10? 5? that would be funny af
Joe Tsai should let him walk this summer. There isn’t a lot of cap space to sign Irving anywhere that is competing without GM’s working into the night maneuvering for that to happen. If punishment for Irving is the ultimate goal of Tsai then letting him play out his final years on a bad team in obscurity would accomplish that. Nets will finish the season & playoffs with success, and then the dealing really starts, but until that deadline nothing is imminent, and Irving should leave Brooklyn, the ownership has no backbone, and doesn’t support him, or his interests.
He’s the type of guy that will sit out the rest of the season if they don’t trade him
His interests are antisemitic, why would anyone support that except a neo-n@zi like you?
Suns can go for broke next year… Offer Bridges, Ayton, Saric, Crowder, Craig, Okogie, Shamet, and Cam Johnson + a couple picks for….
KD, Kyrie, and Benjalina Simmons.
CP13
Kyrie
Booker
KD
Simmons
I mean it works.
Sixers get involved and deal 29 1st a couple swaps and Tobias + Thybulle for Bridges and Harris.
Kyrie for Westbrook is the only move
Westbrook makes $13 million more so it doesn’t work. AD works much better. Irving and Simmons for Westbrook, Beverly, Walker and Reeves would work. Advantage would be frees up a lot of money for Nets and Lakers get Irving who resigns with lakers for next year.
AD isn’t going anywhere, stop it.
Westbrook is going nowhere unless the other team gets a huge advantage in a trade so stop the Westbrook trades.
Nets can send Harris back. No way Kyrie and Westbrick are on the same team
Damn some people simple. Send Oneal and Kyrie for Westbrook and a 2nd or something
Simple is thinking the Nets want Westbrook. Might as well ride out Kyrie than take on Westbrook. It would take more than a 2nd rounder.
Of course Brooklyn doesn’t want Westbrook, but Brooklyn has no leverage. They can take some package structured around Russ and a pick or they can hope Dallas gets desperate. If they sit on Kyrie, he’ll sitout and they’ll get nothing.
The AD proposals are ridiculous though. It completely defeats the purpose of trading for Kyrie if the Lakers gave up AD.
Whoever is interested in acquiring Kyrie need to value him for as long as his contract goes. His next deal has no bearing. He’s a hired gun for a playoff run. Shame he didn’t think he could do that with KD and the team. He looks very selfish right now putting his future contract over preparing for a potential title run in the next weeks. Now that he sat out for a leg injury you have to wonder if he’s going to pull a “Harden” to get his way out of BK this season. Sad.
Crazy. That’s Kyrie.
The Nets have 4 more games before the trade deadline. Any guesses about how many games Kyrie and Benjamin will play?
I’m sorry, I must have forgotten that they have sore body parts.
That will really impress your trade partners!
