The majority of the players the Lakers acquired prior to this month’s trade deadline aren’t owed guaranteed money beyond this season, so the team still has the flexibility to generate a significant amount of cap room this summer, if necessary. However, the expectation from rival executives is that the Lakers will operate over the cap and bring back most – or all – of the players they traded for, writes Sean Deveney of Heavy.com.
“They would never have given up that (2027 first-round) pick unless they planned to make some long-term investments,” one general manager told Deveney. “They were willing to trade it but they needed some guys just heading into their primes to convince them to give it up.
“Now they’ve got (D’Angelo) Russell, they’ve got (Jarred) Vanderbilt, they’ve got Malik Beasley, plus (Rui) Hachimura, Austin Reaves. We’ll see what they do with Mo Bamba, too. That’s a base of young players that they did not have before, you know, guys who are (in their) mid-20s. They’re going to keep those guys in place. They’re all-in on paying those guys.”
Here’s more on the Lakers’ present and future:
- The GM who spoke to Deveney thinks the floor for Russell on his next contract will be $70MM over three years. Another executive believes that the 27-year-old guard, who will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason, will get something in the range of Anfernee Simons‘ four-year, $100MM deal.
- Russell, who sprained his right ankle on Thursday, is listed as doubtful to play on Sunday in Dallas, but may not have a lengthy absence — he’s considered day-to-day, per head coach Darvin Ham (Twitter links via Mike Bresnahan of Spectrum SportsNet and ESPN’s Dave McMenamin).
- Sources tell Deveney that the Lakers may look to re-sign Hachimura on a contract similar to the one Kyle Kuzma got from the team in 2020 ($39MM over three years). “He wanted something around $20 million (per year) from the Wizards and they were never going that high,” a Western Conference executive said of Hachimura. “He has to be a little humbled by this season because he just didn’t make that jump he expected to make—he can’t shoot and if you can’t shoot as a wing in the NBA, you’re in trouble. So, I’d expect him to get three years, with an option. Something like $13-14 million, that way he is still a good trade asset going forward or he is going to be a guy who becomes a huge bargain.”
- That same Western exec seems high on Bamba, suggesting that the big man’s $10.3MM team option for next season is a relative bargain and that there’s “still a lot of trade value on him.” It’s an interesting assessment, given that Bamba’s playing time dipped in Orlando this season after he signed that contract and the exec acknowledges the Lakers “got him for almost nothing” from the Magic.
Lul. The excitement over a 13 seeded team picking up a few one dimensional cast offs is hilarious. Watching russel and Beasley guard the wests best 1&2s is going to be hilarious
As a clippers fan neither la team is going anywhere now that the clippers signed Russ guaranteeing they have 0 shot now to win the west !
Only thing in play is clippers vs lakers 9 vs 10 play in tournament mid off is possible lol
And vice versa.who you gonna double? Bron, Davis? Then d-lo will kill you, Beasley will kill you. Double Dlo, Bron will murder you. Pick your poison.
@gooberz teams that don’t play D don’t go far. This is basic stuff
Even the Lakers would tell you that. The only reason they won in the bubble was due to their defense.
Like this? Kings 176 Clippers 175
Yeah they. Lol the NBA is rigged for offense. No defense played at all
They do. They just have a more potent offense. Like GS,
Well, if I were a Lakers fan, I’d be a heck of alot more excited than I was before the trade deadline and ASB.
Right now, they’re looking at a two-deep rotation of the following:
PG: D.Russell, D.Schroeder
SG: M.Beasley, A.Reaves
SF: L.James, L.Walker
PF: J.Vanderbilt, R.Hachimura
C: A.Davis, M.Bamba
And they still have Gabriel and Brown Jr. Off the bench as two high-energy, athletic 3/4s that are versatile and get after it defensively..
Their rotation is SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER than it was before Rob Pelinka worked some magic.
Everyone gives him crap, but given what he’s been forced to deal with because of LeBron (trading away all their assets and role players for Westbrook), he’s really done a great job whenever he’s allowed to wheel and deal freely.
People refuse to understand that Pelinka was not the one who made the Westbrook trade, that was LeBron forcing their hand. The same goes with why they signed THT to that deal..
Like I said, with what he has been given, next to absolutely nothing, Pelinka turned a garbage lineup into having multiple assets for the future by adding multiple quality players in their 20s for next to nothing…
If they somehow are able to make the playoffs Pelinka deserves a statue outside their arena..lol It’ll be one of the best deadline transformations in NBA History if the Lakers can get together, and continue riding their wave of momentum.
They’ll get a 1st and second this year. I’m guessing they’ll search for a vando part 2. Tall lean active wing with defense 1st mentality. They might work with christie or mccoy. The two biggest sleepers in lakers g league. Mccoy is intriguing because his ball handing and his ability to eat on midrange shots, with a Nasty fade away. They have options.
Not to mention, that is how you create a team around two great and versatile players like LeBron and AD.
They are so versatile, so you can afford to find cheap players that are really good at certain other things. Multiple offensive threats that can shoot from deep and handle the ball like Beasely, D-Lo, Hachimura, etc., a solid low post defender and rebounder like Vanderbilt. A perfect backup C in a young guy like Bamba who’s game hasn’t fully blossomed yet, but he’s 7 foot and capable of doing multiple things well…
These are the players that can deepen your roster, compliment your all-stars, and make this a competitive team again.
Also, these aren’t your typical buyout additions or your typical veteran, old cast-offs that the Lakers were able to obtain. The Lakers were able to get quality role players with potential and youth still on their side. Players, that if they resign, the Lakers will now have a sold core to build upon, which is something they desperately needed after LeBron forced the Westbrook deal and left the Lakers with next to nothing…
“They’re all-in on paying those guys.”
Hopefully not, unless those guys earn it.
But then, it’s the Lakers. Time will tell.
They only have 2 choices, over the cap is the easy call here
Good group for another 1-2 years and then they will have a ton of money to replace Lebron.
Not a bad plan.
The lakers are a poorly run team right now. Before shaking up the players, they should shake up the front office.
Utter nonsense.
@drowining the lakers front office is a mess. You would hear it from the media but Jeanie is friends with most of em. Wake up homer
Owner that just wants to win, GM that just pulled a rabbit out of a hat and a couple of Rambis’ that apparently don’t do much.
What’s the problem again?
Should Jeanie be a Mark Cuban type owner? Dolan? How/what would you shake up exactly?
How deep will Jeanie go into the purse is the only question left for the Lakers this offseason
The days of cap are almost dead
It’s not just Jeanie anymore. Sure she remains the controlling owner but she has investors. They’re part of the same group that own the Dodgers and they’re loaded. Just look at the Dodgers. They’d gladly take over the team tomorrow if she’d sell.
I think the Lakers did well at the trade deadline. The Lakers should be over the cap. I thInk they will make the playoff if Russell stays healthy. I hate it being a Celtic fan.
@spike. Yeah but admit it. Its not the same winning a championship if you don’t beat the Lakers. And via versa
The lakers won’t keep all those guys if they don’t win many games. They go get a bunch of guys use them then let them go.
All food tastes good when you’re hungry. Lakers fans must be starving lol
The Lakers were a joke before they made the moves they did…
I doubt it’ll be enough to save this season, as they still moved dead money for dead money in Russ for DLo… But at least the roster makes sense now…
Considering where the Lakers were. And now picking up Russell, Bamba, Beasley, Vanderbilt, Rui. This is a solid retool. But you can’t talk about next yr. Till you see how they end the season. The play-in is definitely within reach. So I see Lakers making playoffs. They are only 3 1/2 gms back of Mavs. For the 6th seed. So it’s not impossible……
Now we ask ?? Will the Kings be all the way in. Or do they start to fall.
Lakers beat Mavs 2day. It’s a big step toward 6th seed.
