After Kyrie Irving‘s agent reached out to the Nets about an extension last week, Brooklyn offered him a deal that included an unlikely incentive based on the team winning a championship, sources tell Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report (Twitter link).
Haynes was told that Irving’s camp refused to negotiate after the offer, and now the All-Star guard reportedly won’t re-sign with the Nets even if he was offered a fully guaranteed maximum-salary extension, which would be worth $198.5MM over four years.
According to Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report (Twitter link), an unlikely incentive can be worth up to 15% of a contract’s yearly value.
Shams Charania of The Athletic reports (via Twitter) that the Nets offered a multiyear extension, with the stipulations tied to the last year of the deal. Charania didn’t specify the years or amount that was offered.
Sources tell ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski that the Nets were “reluctant to rush into a long-term commitment without further evidence that Irving could stay reliable, perform at a high level and remain controversy-free.” Reading between the lines, it’s pretty clear that he wasn’t offered a four-year extension.
The market isn’t exactly brimming with teams in pursuit of Irving due to how many games he’s missed over the past handful of years, not to mention the controversy. In fact, two of his primary would-be suitors, the Lakers and Mavericks, are wary of giving up “significant trade assets” in a potential offer, sources tell Wojnarowski.
Irving, who turns 31 next month, is making $36.9MM in the final year of his contract. If he’s traded, he would be eligible for a two-year extension worth up to $78.6MM until June 30, but Woj sounds skeptical that would be available to Irving, especially right away, writing that “no teams are privately expressing a desire to make that investment.” That includes the Suns, another team expected to have interest in acquiring Irving.
The Nets are currently 31-20, the No. 4 seed in the East, but have gone just 4-7 since Kevin Durant was injured. Wojnarowski reports that many rival teams are “far more interested” in seeing how Durant reacts to Irving’s trade request and learning whether Durant may decide to follow suit, rather than pursuing Irving himself.
In an appearance on NBA TV (Twitter video link), Haynes said he “would be very surprised if Kyrie is a Net past the trade deadline,” which is February 9 at 2:00pm CT.
I sorta don’t blame him with that stipulation but then again he has been a nutcase the last few years.
He’s only got himself to blame
Nets should have traded him before the season when they had the chance
The owners love to offer 2 types of incentive
1. Championship bonus $20 million
Eric Gordon of Rockets
2. Jordan Poole bonus if he wins both MVP and defensive player of the year
U can blame whomever u want, he’s a moron.
And who loses in the ends? The fans, thats who. How is that elderly Nets fan feeling right now? Probably crushed. Just…wow
top three commenter…
Come on though, after how his time ended in both Cleveland and Boston, how couldn’t Nets fans and management not seen this coming?
I would love for once to see the teams take a stand and no one sign Kyrie this offseason. A player of his talent being out of the league because he’s a head case would set a precedent for other guys who don’t have enough respect for the fans to stop doing stupid stuff.
While the fans might have been waiting for the other show to drop they have to feel betrayed that a top ten player wants to be traded while sitting #4 in the conference. Their season is over. If I was a Net fan I’d be pissed off
Top ten player lmao no
That’s what this league needs. Collusion
Boss, the happiest fans in the world right now should be those of the Brooklyn Nets
It’s been a while Lil D, welcome back?
Lucian and Dan asked me to come out of retirement with the trade deadline approaching.
While I was away I was taking a Internet & Commenting class at South Harvard Arts College a small liberal arts campus in Orlando. The food was so-so.
More importantly we need a wellness check on Mr. Whammy aka Bruce R. Of Brooklyn…
KD should just make it easy. Show the world you can win with Russ. You almost did it in OKC. Show some and prove all the experts wrong. I sure would like to see it.
Westbrook and all the picks you can get.
Russ is still a good athlete, but back then he was one of the best in the league, those days are gone.
Good decision making with decent shooting is something Russ does not possess.
Not gone for KD. And Russ is younger.
KD’s game is not based on being a freak athlete.
I watch Russ nightly. I pray to the basketball gods that the Nets and KD think they can win with Russ
Kyrie real mad about that spanking they got from Boston
Dude must regret leaving Boston every single day.
Lonzo, Pat Will, Colby White, Portland 23 1st, Bulls 27 1st
Give him 4 yr max at the end of the season.
Kyrie, Caruso LaVine, DeRozan, and maybe the go heavy into the tax and keep Vuc
Sounds like a 5 seed
Sounds like a play in team…
Brooklyn set the bait and Kyrie took it… hook, line, and sinker.
They didn’t want to be married to this guy beyond this year.
Yep
To be honest Brooklyn would’ve known the risk of signing Kyrie and KD and the drama that comes with that. Especially then getting James Harden and moving off him because of internal issues and going to Ben Simmons.
You’ve had to hire and fire a head coach, had all three stars request trades at some point with 1 leaving. In terms of success you made the conference semis 2020-21 and last year got swept in the first round. This year so far you’ve been pretty good currently 4th in the east but even looking at the playoffs do you think they can play at another level above where they are at now? Not really I don’t think.
I think if I’m the owner and GM I’d be thinking, let’s just start over again cause the guys leading the way aren’t worth all the negativity.
That said you aren’t likely to get an amazing package of Kyrie but you can get something.
Some ideas I’d be looking at are
Kyrie and Seth Curry for Dlo, McDaniels and Naz Reid
Dlo coming back, fans will turn up to see that but overall it’s just a nice size expiring deal. McDaniels is a solid young prospect and Naz Reid would pair beautifully with Nic Claxton as your big man duo. Kyrie could be the solution for the TWolves struggles on offence and if not he’s atleast a huge upgrade from Dlo. Naz Reid is a loss but he’s leaving in FA anyway and you can promote Luke Garza and see how he goes off the bench in spurts. McDaniels is also a loss but that’s covered well with Anderson, Prince, Moore and Minott.
The package gives you some youth and some depth but keeps you competitive. If KD decides to follow suit and request a trade then you get your really strong return for him. But either way you’ve at least built some kinda foundation.
Another idea is
Brooklyn: GTJ, Jonothan Issac and Mo Bamba
Toronto: Kyrie Irving and Patty Mills
Orlando: FVV and Cam Thomas
Brooklyn add a shooter, a defensive minded forward and a versatile centre.
GTJ would suit playing with Ben in the backcourt. Isaacs shares the PF spot with ONeale but both guys bring some defence and switchable skills. Then lastly Mo backs up Claxton and brings some spacing ability which would be handy.
Brooklyn would have a starting 5 of
Simmons GTJ KD ONeale Claxton
And bench of
Curry Harris Warren Issac Bamba
If Kd leaves you’ve got a good core of talent similar to the Utah Jazz in the fact that even without a star you’d be a good enough side cause of the depth you have.
What a disgrace of a franchise BRK are!
Who on earth they think they are to put stipulations in his contract?!?!?
Let’s hope KD & Ben ask out of there ASAP as well!
Oh yeah. I am offended now and will not take any amount of money, even if it is the most you can give.
Any other player and maybe I could see some sort of slight. But nah. Why is it only his right to ever be offended.
Because the name is Karen Irving…
Kyrie gonna Kyrie…
Only a GM looking to get fired and keep their pay is going to trade anything of value to a Nets team that at this point would be willing to take back bad money just to be rid of the controversy…
Pelinka might be that GM…
Irving, Curry, picks and swaps for Lillard.
Blazers get younger and cheaper, Lillard gets chance to compete.
