The Warriors must decide by 9:30 pm Eastern time on Sunday whether to rescind a four-team trade in the wake of Gary Payton II‘s failed physical, tweets ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. He adds that Golden State may take another day to evaluate Payton’s condition and determine if it’s in the team’s best interest to keep him.
Sources tell Wojnarowski (Twitter link) that Warriors officials believe the Trail Blazers withheld important information about Payton’s condition prior to the trade, which was completed shortly before Thursday’s deadline. Payton is dealing with a core muscle injury that Golden State’s medical staff says could sideline him for up to three months. The muscle issue prevented Payton from making his season debut until January 2, but he has been playing regularly since then.
Portland general manager Joe Cronin insists the Blazers were completely open in trade negotiations, saying Friday that the organization was “confident that he was healthy.”
At stake is a complex trade in which the Hawks acquired Saddiq Bey from the Pistons; the Pistons received former lottery pick James Wiseman from the Warriors; the Trail Blazers landed Kevin Knox from the Pistons, three second-round picks from Atlanta and two second-rounders from Golden State; and the Warriors re-acquired Payton from Portland, along with two second-round picks from Atlanta.
Because the trade deadline has passed, the terms of the deal can’t be altered, tweets Bobby Marks of ESPN. Initial reporting indicated that might be an option after news broke about the failed physical, but Marks has learned that accepting the trade in its current form or rescinding it entirely are the Warriors’ only choices.
Marks reports that the NBA issued a reminder to each team last week that medical information on players had to be fully disclosed in trade talks (Twitter link). The Warriors could ask the league to investigate (there’s precedent for a team being retroactively rewarded a draft pick in such a case), but Marks notes that it could take weeks or months to complete and wouldn’t help the team with its current decision.
Multiple league sources tell Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area that Golden State is strongly considering holding on to Payton, even if he’s out of action indefinitely. Poole notes that the Warriors’ perimeter defense has been an issue lately, and Payton showed last season that he can make a difference as a point-of-attack defender.
Tim Kawakami of The Athletic first reported that Golden State would have until Sunday to make a final decision on the Payton trade.
I am surprised that the NBA is not addressing a team with holding injury status before a trade. Payton’s injury must be more serious then a minor set back for the trade would have gone through by now.
Adam Silver only pipes up when there’s cameras and it’s an easy decision
im still confused by Atlanta getting Bey..
Warriors give up Wiseman
Pistons give up Bey
Blazers give up GP2
Hawks give up nothing.. get best player in trade by a landslide
Reading hard eh?
Hawks gave up five 2nd rounders.
Was Bey on a minimum contract? Or how did they sign him without sending out a players?
They had a trade exception that they were able to fit him into.
I still think the Golden State Warriors going to accept Gary Payton II because they save so much money and they’ll still have him for two more seasons. They love him. They not doing nothing with James Wiseman. Let him go
I am watching 76ers vs Nets game now
Nets are good with 4 new young guys
Adding superstar like MJ or Hakeem, Nets are dynasty
Nets have 8 unprotected picks avail for trade
Now they just need to sign Kyrie in the off-season
Basketball Gods telling you guys to keep James Wiseman. Don’t screw it up
Deny, or accept the trade? If the Warriors accept it, which I think they do, I will be looking for a compensation trade around the draft between these 2 teams to see if Portland has accepted they did something in error, and made good without the NBA stepping in. The accept, or rescind the trade is a tough demand to not allow a make up of value somehow. I wouldn’t want Wiseman back, and the Hawks are praying they get to keep Bey.
In baseball they let you adjust a trade if a player is injured like draft picks. Its not going to look good for the NBA if they decline the trade so there could be a deal working in the background where there is some type of compensation that is allowed.
Portland GM sure selected words to get around the 100% commitment that he was not injured. Wouldn’t he say 100% confident but just confident means a little wiggle room.
In Baseball you should read the entire article, in Basketball you should do the same. This was explicitly discussed.
I too hope there is a way now to soothe some deservedly hurt feelings if something went bad here. Seems like the easiest, and most fair thing to do for the others involved, and not just compensating Golden State, and docking Portland. Complicated….
My immediate reaction was this looks like a Preller trade. The league would be wise to let GS and POR renegotiate their compensation exchanged and let the rest of the trade otherwise stand.
not sure Jordan or Hakeem are available tho
I’m a huge GP2 fan. What me meant to us in the playoffs can’t be understated. We don’t have a wing capable of his type of smothering and frustrating D. We need him bad. But he did all that while healthy. This isn’t gonna work out if he’s not a full go. I’m sorry but I’d nix this trade send Wiseman to the G league and pick Ibaka asap
How is a guy who has to receive shots of Toradol before every game to treat pain healthy?
I’d still take Payton. Warriors aren’t winning anyway
So according to Payton’s own agent he never took Toradol.
Aaron Goodwin — the agent of Gary Payton II — tells @NBAonTNT/@BleacherReport that “despite of what’s being reported, my client never took Toradol shots to be available for games during his time in Portland.”
I think Golden State has some questions to answer.
Don’t do it …….
So what happens to players involved in trade. Can they still be traded. Wouldn’t mind trying to get Bey.
Paragraph 5, Line 1:
“Because the trade deadline has passed, the terms of the deal can’t be altered, tweets Bobby Marks of ESPN.”
I bet they keep him and there’s a “wink wink” agreement for a future make-good.
Another example of why you shouldn’t wait till the deadline.
By taking Wiseman back it would cost the Warriors tens of millions of dollars. If the Warriors traded Wiseman for just draft picks they would of saved $131 million, not sure the amount of money saved by GP2 trade, but it’s a lot. Warriors are going to want some financial compensation if the trade falls through.
in the original trade post comments someone had mentioned they would save 55m and an addition ~80m over the life of the contract. it was a nested reply to one of the posts at the top. don’t quote me on the numbers
Don’t take it. You can make this trade again after the season or another one. Wiseman’s value isn’t going to change over 20 games.
It could go up tbh. If Steph is out for an extended period of time our focus should shift to obtaining assets. Showcasing wiseman could help his stock. The warriors are too proud to wave the white flag but if we tried to get a top 10 pick and build wiseman value we would have flexibility to make a move to jumpstart another run at the finals in the next few years. As is I don’t think we have enough to do it again but you never know with Steph Klay and dray. If we lose dray this off season we’re going to have to change our style of play anyway so why not get a jump on a reload
A few years ago the Cavs had a similar issue with the Celtics trade of Isaiah Thomas. The deal was then slightly amended to add a 2nd round pick. I can’t remember, was it just because it wasn’t a deadline deal that they were able to do that? In this case it seems to me the Commish should step in and make a one-time special exception ruling. If he can do that without players union lawsuits flying. If he can’t, then everyone should tacitly agree to a wink-wink adjustment next summer.
The luxury tax difference between having Wiseman or Payton on the roster is relatively small this year, and, while its larger next year, it’s not enormous, and they would have 12 months to mitigate it.
This deal worked for GSW because they got a guy they were pretty sure could contribute this year. Lots of guys can contribute the next 2 years. If Payton can’t play this year, then, other than being accommodative (players and other teams), I don’t see why GSW wouldn’t cancel the trade.
