The NBA has started an investigation of the Trail Blazers for possibly providing misleading information after receiving a complaint from the Warriors regarding a four-team trade involving Gary Payton II, tweets Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Payton failed a physical with Golden State’s medical staff after being acquired from Portland on Thursday. The Warriors have a deadline of 9:30 pm Eastern time today to decide whether to keep Payton or rescind the entire deal, which would also affect the Pistons and Hawks.
The Warriors’ doctors determined that Payton has a core muscle injury that could keep him out of action for up to three months. The injury prevented him from playing until January 2, but he had been a regular part of the Blazers’ rotation since then.
Portland general manager Joe Cronin spoke to reporters about the situation on Friday, saying he didn’t do anything to mislead the Warriors.
Payton played an important role in Golden State’s run to a championship last season, and the team saw him as a way to upgrade its perimeter defense. He left last summer in free agency, signing a three-year deal with Portland worth more than $26MM.
In the trade, the Hawks acquired Saddiq Bey from the Pistons; the Pistons acquired former lottery pick James Wiseman from the Warriors; the Trail Blazers acquired Kevin Knox from the Pistons, three second-round picks from Atlanta, and two second-rounders from Golden State; and the Warriors re-acquired Payton from Portland, along with two second-round picks from Atlanta.
None of those players are able to take the court for their new teams until the Warriors announce their final decision.
So instead of just resigning GPII the traded 2 2nds and Wiseman for GPII?
Warriors need to understand this
Pistons is exciting about Wiseman
Hawks is exciting about Bey
Pistons and Hawks did nothing wrong
They will file complaint too if trade is void
The NBA commish should over turn the rules on the trades and have Portland give back a 2nd rounder for each month Payton is out. That would be the fair thing to do so all teams are happy. The GSW need payton immediately so there is 0 reason for them not to play him if he is well. Last night they lost to a bad team.
Dang, ARC. That ain’t a bad idea.
Nope. They can’t do it. ANY team can void the whole trade if a player fails his physical. I agree it sucks that all three teams get screwed but it’s the GSW who were lied to.
from what the experts have said ONLY the league has the power to change trades. So they can fine Portland to hand over a draft pick or money in compensation for it. They have done it in the original CP3 deal a few years ago by redoing a trade.
No .. they knew exactly what the situation was. It’s all a game of fakery. Return Payton. Deal over. No biggie.
Wrong. It IS a biggie, because the other three teams are now without the ability to pursue other options since the trade deadline passed.
That’s not the way it works. All teams have the right to be happy or as you said excited about the trade. All injuries are to be disclosed up front therefore giving the team a chance to decide if they are ok with the injury or would prefer to pass on it. No other team in this situation has grounds to file a complaint but the one on the losing end of the agreement specifically the Golden State Warriors.
its a black eye on the NBA if the trade doesn’t go through so they will work something out. Portland now will be the team that comes out looking bad on all of this if Payton is out for more than a month.
Right you are! POR looks like dogmeat already, and if they keep fighting this instead of making it right, they will only look worse. POR should have to compensate the Warriors with Picks, and then pay a big $$$ fine as well.
And that’s just for the TRADE. If POR was pushing GPII to play and risking aggravating his injury, they should absolutely be HAMMERED for that.
100%
Correct English would be the Pistons are excited & the Hawks are excited. The deal can only happen “as is” or rescinded. They league could penalize Portland as a separate action.
If you’re going to get picky about English, YOU should get it right:
“Correct English would be [insert colon and put the following phrase in quotes] The Pistons are excited & the Hawks are excited. The deal can only happen “as is” or [BE] rescinded. [THE] league could penalize Portland as a separate action”
ya I get they need PG help and GP2 is great defender ,
but why sell house when you could’ve tabbed Reggie Jackson or John Wall for nothing
I read that Gary Payton said he played with pain
Hopefully this means they are keeping GP. I feel like this trade was as much about the next 2’seasons than it is simply this season anyway
Is this an Indication that they are leaning towards Accepting the Trade?
Don’t think the League would make the Blazers return some of the Warriors draft picks or Pay the rest of this Season’s salary for Payton.
I think it’s just too much of a mess with all the teams involved to veto it at this point.
file a grievance, get some picks back at another point in time, deal with GP2 for now
would be insane for Wiseman and Bey to have to return to their old locker rooms
GSW need to play from day 1 so if payton is not available to play for a few months it proves GSW correct.
Rescind the trade, and the Blazers pay the tax implications for keeping Wiseman.
Another reason why you shouldn’t wait till the deadline.
Other teams involved in the deal may have left them no choice. No telling which of the four had a role in making the trade a last-minute one. Maybe Portland was responsible, figuring they had a better chance of getting away with their lies if they let the clock run out on trades.
The fact that PTB want to dump, I mean trade, Payton after just signing indicates this may be worse than they are letting on. It will be awkward for Wiseman but void the trade and work something out this summer.
It’s crazy to think Warriors would have saved additional $40m in luxury tax this yr alone if they didnt involve Blazers, not to mention 5 2nd round draft picks. They are still saving $6m luxury tax this yr…. But another $40m for GP2. That’s why it’s a big deal if he cant play this yr.
If Warriors had known GP2 is not healthy, they mght have been more aggrrssive in making other notable trades. Regardless, Cronin will lose his job soon and Warriors need to make the best out if this situation.
This is the third trade the Pistons were a part of since 2018 that a player failed his physical. 2018 it was Jonas Valanciunas who said he was fine and played like he was fine ever since. Then last year it was Bol Bol who failed his physical. Look at him now.. hopefully the Warriors and Blazers can come to an agreement weather Portland covers the salary owed to Payton the rest of the year or give back a pick or two.. from what I read last night someone within the Warriors said they are still going to go through with the trade but need to adjust the return
Hey Doctor … wink, wink, nod, nod … if there is ANY way you can find that Payton isn’t 100% (no one is this time of the season) make sure GPII fails his physical on that core issue thing and we’ll put the squeeze on ’em. Blazers response: Okay .. no deal.
I GS has a valid point but they are in a tough spot here because of the huge tax ramifications that are rumored to be 90 million to 130 million. This deal is going to happen because their intentions haven’t changed. Getting rid of Wiseman & the penalties was the motivation. Getting a player to help on their run is important but not as important then getters rid of the tax issue. Even billionaires will feel a 90 to 130 million being given to the league.
