The Warriors and Lakers were the biggest contributors in revenue sharing for the 2021/22 season, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports.
Those franchises combined to pay more than $88MM to smaller-market teams last season. A total of 10 teams paid out $163.6MM in revenue sharing. Adding in approximately $240MM in luxury tax payouts, there were 20 teams collecting a total of $404MM.
Topping the list of revenue sharing beneficiaries was the Pacers, who collected $42.2MM. The Nuggets ($35.5M) and Trail Blazers ($32M) rounded out the top three, according to Wojnarowski.
We have more from the basketball world:
- For all lottery-bound teams, May 16 is the big night. That’s when the lottery will be held, the NBA’s PR department tweets. The G League Elite Camp will be held May 13 and 14, while the draft combine will take place from May 15-21.
- UCLA guard Amari Bailey, Missouri forward Kobe Brown and Furman forward Jalen Slawson were among the draft prospects who helped their cause in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, as Jonathan Wasserman of Bleacher Report details.
- While Nuggets star center Nikola Jokic was seemingly pulling away from the pack for the Most Valuable Player award earlier this season, the race has tightened up the last few weeks, ESPN’s Tim Bontemps writes. Joel Embiid has pulled even with Jokic, according to a prominent Las Vegas sportsbook, and Giannis Antetokounmpo is very much in the running due to the Bucks’ surge to the top of the East.
- The recent turmoil among regional sports networks affects 18 NBA teams, prompting The Athletic’s Mike Vorkunov to detail what changes could be coming to the industry and what steps those franchises might take.
A few owners like revenues more than championships
Just about all. They are more interested in collecting a big tax refund check at the end of season more than anything.
The owners you praise make more than the owners you hate on lol
I find it laughable that Giannis isn’t the overwhelming favorite for MVP. He plays both ends of the floor. His offensive numbers equal any other, and he’s a first team defensive player annually. He’s only flaw is he plays in small market Milwaukee.
I think it’s more positional bias than geographical. If Giannis was a center his stats would get more attention. IMO Giannis & Embiid are the only real MVP candidates b/c they are 2-way players. So much is made of Jokic filling the stat sheet, but he doesn’t play a kick of defense and is a liability on defense. also tired of hearing the media making the MVP award a perfect attendance award. injuries & illnesses happen!
there should be standards on the award before you can be voted on. Your team must have a winning record. A certain many games played. Must be top 10 in stats.
You clearly don’t watch Jokic much if you think he “doesn’t play a kick of defense”
Yes he does lead the league in kick balls by a tremendous margin.
I think that is Desmond Bane who leads kicked balls this year with 2.
No it’s Joker by a long shot he’s got like 47 vs next up is around 11 or 12. Zach Lowe was saying it’s a byproduct of lazy defending
Are you sure? Jokic has the best defensive box plus/minus in the NBA.
His quote not mine
The NCAA is a joke and this season will not be the last where the top prospects aren’t playing that brand of basketball…
In fact there’s just going to be more too prospects from outside of the NCAA…
How are the Clippers not ahead of the Lakers in this category, from what I’ve read they pay far more than the Lakers in luxury tax, second only to the Warriors I believe and likely to surpass them soon. Nobody has money to burn like Balmer. Lakers aren’t even in the top 5 for tax bills.
The Lakers still make more money…
