Warriors president of basketball operations and general manager Bob Myers is in the final year of his contract, and his future with the team is reportedly uncertain.
Franchise star Stephen Curry, former Defensive Player of the Year Draymond Green, and longtime head coach Steve Kerr all support Myers and hope the Warriors will extend his contract before it expires, reports Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area.
“We were all young at one point when we were trying to figure it out,” Curry said of Myers. “One of his special abilities is to connect with you where you are. Be truthful and honest and authentic about how difficult the NBA is in the sense of decisions that are made and the business side of it. But also, he has a personal touch that you trust.”
Myers has been Golden State’s GM since 2012/13, winning four championships, including last season. Green has a $27,586,224 player option for next season, and if he exercises it, Myers will be one reason why, according to Poole.
“Bob is huge for us,” Green told NBC Sports Bay Area. “Some GMs put a team together and then they go into their office and watch to see if it works. You don’t see many GMs working daily, having conversations with guys, keeping a pulse of the team, and then having those tough conversations. General managers don’t do that in this league. Bob does. He’s incredible.”
A few months ago, Warriors owner Joe Lacob stated that the team made two contract extension offers to Myers, but obviously nothing has come to fruition as of yet. Like Curry and Green, Kerr praised Myers’ ability to build rapport with individuals at all levels, both inside and outside of the organization.
“I always talk about connectors on the floor,” Kerr told Poole. “Bob is our connector, organizationally, off the floor. His relationships with all the key figures are so important. His ability to connect with Steph and Draymond and Klay (Thompson) and, in the same moment, go upstairs and talk to Joe, talk to others in the front office, talk to media . . . he just has an amazing way with people.
“He keeps us connected in a business where it’s really easy to fray because of the pressures and the different factors involved.”
Myers has declined to discuss his contractual situation, saying he’s focused on the Warriors and the current season as they attempt to defend their title. Poole’s story features more quotes from Curry and Kerr and is worth checking out in full.
I am not a Bob Meyer fan. He has more luck this anything else with a huge money bag. My question has always been if Kerr wants established players why waste you draft picks on players that will never play. NBA experts always say this player is perfect for the warriors but Meyer picks somebody so raw they have no chance to play.
Most times it’s not even Myers making the pick, it’s Lacob or his sons with Draymond popping in out of nowhere. Draymond is literally the reason they picked Jacob Evans and Jordan Bell. Myers did pick Paschall and Rollins. Bad pick. And I know for certain Myers was the one to choose Poole because Poole was given a draft promise. And the PBJ pick was a Myers pick signaling they wanted Franz Wagner because warriors insiders revealed Josh Giddey was number one on their draft board with Wagner being 2 and Kuminga was 3/4 but they went with the athleticism. That seemed like Joe Lacob was behind Kuminga. Lacob is behind the Wiseman pick when Bob wanted to trade down. Warriors weren’t going to take LaMelo because his father might of brought unnecessary drama to the team and butt heads with the big 3. I do not think Moody was on high on their board but that was a last decision F it hope it pans out pick because they wanted an older higher floor player, ready to plug in day 1 player with that selection. Lacob’s sons were behind the Alan Smailagić and Jessup picks.
Before the drafts the experts picked who the Warriors should pick and that never happens. Yes Giddey was their pick before Kuminga but he got taken. Davion Mitchell was also somebody the experts talked about. Trey Murphy was another they talked about fitting in. Rollins was a odd pick since he was so raw talent. They need to go for 4 year college players who Kerr likes to play.
Since you can’t spell his name I assume you don’t know much about him anyway
Reno, ARC has always misspelled it. So, yes, he’s never been right about Myers. And the Wiseman pick was clearly mandated by Lacob and Lacob. Myers has hit and missed. But I’m not familiar with the Meyers guy. Half of Arcs comments have merit. Other half, meritless
I assume you can’t debate anything since your only post is about a name spelling. Come back when you can make a real comment.
LMAO trying to connect Draymond exercising his player option to Bob Meyers. Give me a break! Local reporting at it’s finest. Wonder if this Poole fella does stand up.
Agreed. The money is what will keep Green in the bay, but declining that much money would be a sign of really wanting to get away from an organization. I just can’t see it
He could get a longer contract somewhere else I know Portland, Lakers, and Mavs all want him on their team.
Not for 27 mil lol How’s Marge, homer?
Lakers and Mavs will both have 0 dollars combined to spend in free agency next year Arc
Dray’s leaving 26 mill for the 11 mill MLE ?
That’s bold brotha
For the detractors…. not every draft pick pans out. No matter how much of a lock the prospect is… things happen. You have players that are better currently on the roster blocking playing time, you have guys that just can’t adjust their game, guys don’t work their weaknesses, injuries.
Wiseman was the clear pick at #2. If you were to Monday morning QB it, trading down and/or taking Pat Williams would have worked better schematically.
Moving to the 21 draft – Wagner is clearly a better overall player right now than Kuminga. Kuminga still has a chance to develop into an OG if he gets more PT. I was never a Moody guy, idk why they didn’t take Kispert. He fit their team way more than Moody. If I were a championship-competing team, I’d skew to more polished players esp if my whole offense is based on 3-pt shooting.
The real question here though will be in a few years why didn’t they trade the young guys for Durant? Even with KD going down for PHX, it’s still Kevin Durant. The window for Curry, Klay, and Draymond closes – Father Time, as they say, is undefeated. KD would make them a lock for a WCF appearance. I mean the Nets got a great package back – love Bridges… but Wiseman, Kuminga, Moody, and Poole? That’s pretty solid.
But back to the main point here – Myers has hit more than he missed. The challenge, not just for him, but also for Steve is to work in younger pieces. The move for KD originally panned out. The move for Wiggins obv panned out. He’s made moves that set them up, and you eventually have to pay your guys. So the cap figure is what it is, otherwise you blow it all up.
Kerr not letting the rookies make mistakes and get pt is what basically put a nail in the coffin of this team’s future. Look at Wiseman, Kerr misused him and although the pistons aren’t good, Wiseman looks like their best player now and has been a plus even when the pistons are getting blown out. Kerr’s malpractice forced the warriors to sell low on a potential all star big.
az, they HAVE rolled with the rookies. They’re .500. They kept a bench of 22-year-olds instead of bringing in six 30-year-olds as last year’s bench was made up.
This is not the best time for Myers and Money Green to talk about contract extensions.
After playoffs success, then you talk ….
Pretty easy to say from the sidelines they should have made X move or drafted Y player in hindsight.
I’m no warriors fan but 4 championships in 10 years is pretty damn good. If they let him go there will 25 teams waiting at the door.
Absolutely Ryan. Everyone thinks this is an easy job but I’ll tell you what.. you’re right. There will be 25 other teams waiting to sign this guy.
And Bob knows that. Look at the Tom Connelly deal with the Wolves. Bob is looking for that x10 as he’s the better the GM. Tom Connelly was given ownership stake of the wolves. Look at the poor job Tom has done so far
That works both ways though. Curry, Klay, and Draymond were drafted a long time ago. The Poole extension is looking okay at best right now. And, personally, I have not loved any of the Warriors recent picks, even without the benefit of hindsight (the lone exception would be PBJ). I thought the rest were generally mistakes.
I wouldn’t get rid of the guy just yet, but I also wouldn’t want to sign him to a massive (for a gm) long-term extension. I’d give him his money, but try to keep the years down if I could. Then again, it’s not like Lacob couldn’t afford to terminate him early and eat the money if he wanted to.
You make a fair point. I generally agree regarding the draft picks especially looking back but he’s made some other great personnel moves, convincing KD, turning KD S&T to Dlo and Wiggins + unprotected first (even if the jury is out on the pick). Under the radar moves like GP3 and Divencenzo this year. A few more. Every GM has a few misses.
I would stay as long as curry, Thompson, green and looney are there
You could be right but always remember there is a thing where a guy wants to build something on his own. Look at the comments here, they all say Meyers success is based on the great Squad he inherited. He won’t get enough credit for the four rings.
But if he leaves and builds something else again he’ll possibly get full credit?
Same thing with Draymond Green. Everyone says his four rings are on the coattails of a good squad. He may want to establish his own credibility and try to help another team win?
Pride is a big thing for pro athletes though the Warriors have put team first attitude on the front burner for 10 years. Amazing thing to see.
I agree with everything you said above but pride is something they do not have at all in todays NBA. It’s pride to get paid is theo only thing they care about along with only thinking about your own culture. No defense, no good coaches, and no dribbling. The 60s players would destroy the players of today.
Draymonds only way to 27m is to opt in…
He aint getting a double figure yearly salary any other way…
