The Mavericks plan to file an official protest with the league office after tonight’s 127-125 loss to the Warriors, tweets Shams Charania of The Athletic.
The protest is in response to an alleged officiating error late in the third quarter that led to an uncontested basket for Golden State (video link from The Athletic). All five Dallas players were on the opposite side of the court as the Warriors inbounded the ball, resulting in an easy dunk for Kevon Looney.
Mavericks owner Mark Cuban provided an explanation of the play (via Twitter), claiming the referees informed his team that it would have the ball after a stoppage in play.
“For those wondering about the play with 1:54 to go on the 3rd, let me explain what happened,” Cuban wrote. “The ref called Mavs ball. The announcer announced it. Then there was a timeout. During the time out the official changed the call and never told us. Then when they saw us line up as if it were our ball, he just gave the ball to the Warriors. Never said a word to us. They got an easy basketball. Crazy that it would matter in a 2 point game. Worst officiating non call mistake possibly in the history of the NBA. All they had to do was tell us and they didn’t.”
Mavericks coach Jason Kidd also addressed the play in his post-game press conference, claiming that officials didn’t handle the situation properly (Twitter link from Brad Townsend of The Dallas Morning News).
“If there’s confusion, it’s easy to just come in and blow the whistle and get us restarted,” Kidd said. “Because it was confusion. Understanding that we thought it was our ball, the referee pointed towards our bench. That was the signal of the timeout, but there was confusion on the play before it even started with whose ball it was because he pointed, I thought, to us first. Then he changed it and then went to a timeout, and pointed to us.”
In a tweet from the league, crew chief Sean Wright explained why officials handled the play the way they did.
“Initially on the floor the original signal was in fact Golden State ball as this can be seen on video,” Wright said. “There is a second signal but that signal is for a mandatory timeout that was due to the Mavs.”
Under NBA rules, notice of the protest must be submitted to the commissioner’s office within 48 hours of the end of the game. Both teams will have five days to submit evidence to the NBA after the protest is filed, and commissioner Adam Silver will then have an additional five days to make a ruling.
No team has been successful in protesting a game since 2008, notes NBA writer Marc Stein (Twitter link).
Kyrie convinced ownership to protest
Mavs could try a novel approach and actually play defense and box out on rebounds. This is the worst fundamental team in the NBA and they deserve every loss they get.
#FreeLuka
The officials missed Lamb getting pushed in the back which was 1005 obvious that led to a 3 pt made shot. So what is Dallas crying about they got a lot of calls going their way.
Refs have adjusted this call to correct that officiating Errors in the third
I agree that a lot of officiating errors tonight in favor of Mavs
I have seen every warrior game since 2012… they used to get calls before they were famous lol… Curry scores 50 yet only went to the line once???? Teams come in with confidence knowing that the refs are going to be on there side…. Since 2016
Couldn’t agree more!
Never seen NBA star players treated like they do Steph and the Warriors, it’s legitimately worth investigation.
Draumond should’ve fouled out three different times late in the game including Dallas’ second to last possession when it was still a game.
Luka could have fouled out long ago. Like when Poole went after the ball and touched the ball but was called for the foul when he had possession not Luka. luka could have been called for travel 3 times.
Wow lol if there ever was an action more indicative of this team’s culture.
If at first you dont succeed, whine, whine again.
Luka and Cuban deserve each other. Both entitled clowns. They tried as hard as they could to get that 3 at the end of the game when they were down 5 just so they could say it was a 2 point game so they could whine even more that those 2 points affected the game. Take the L and move on and don’t let it ruin ur season
I really think you guys sit and wait to have the exact same opinion and just swap out the team name to whoever is the easiest target. I swear there’s probably 10 basketball fans on this board. The rest are sports nerds who love drama and have downtime. So odd
Luka pouts and whines to the officials after every call. Kyrie forced his own exit when things didn’t go his way. Christian Wood is a literally giant baby.
Are there other crybaby teams? Some. But I wouldn’t post this about OKC, or Philly, or Sacramento.
So check yourself before you come at the top commenter (officially in the top 3 annually).
Top commenter on the hoopsrumors board… downtime. Check. Bringing up Kyries Nets departure… loves drama. Check. Only thing missing is sports nerd but being as you didn’t add Phoenix or GS or Memphis or Miami or either of the LA teams, Im gonna guess that doesn’t apply.
I liked you better when you were your basketball conspiracy theory arc. But when you’re liking your own reply to this maybe spread the love.
P.S OGs know Sillivan is the top commentator on this board
Explain how I like my own comment 6 times.
I’ll wait.
Sillivan might be top poster in volume but none of it makes any actual sense.
Me on the other hand? Erudite, well spoken, luminary, handsome, bball iq off the charts, dunk on people on the reg, can beat Steph Curry 1:1 but probably not in horse, handsome, funny, charming, I know everything, top 3 commenter.
Mic dropped.
I like to think all of those are true and you still dedicate your days, sun up to sun down, trying to form half way knowledgeable opinions that will generate minimal interaction. But im sure interactions are too few and far between to really differentiate whats real and not anyway, so its a win win for you. You’re like one of those ESPN talking heads! Except for the money, fame, qualifications, respect from your peers, and success. Other than that though.
Dont feel embarrassed either. Im sure SAS likes his own posts too
Your prose is like quicksand; the first line almost looks like it makes sense, but the longer I try to read, the more your point becomes completely out of reach.
For everyone here’s benefit I suggest just saying what you mean plainly and eschewing the fluff. You’re just not as talented of a commenter as me and frankly it’s embarrassing.
I didn’t know you could do this
You can, though it’s usually only flagrantly incorrect techs that get a nod from the league. I don’t even know if any protest for a non-tech reason even worked.
IT’S A CONSPIRACY!
My grandmother told me to cover my mouth when I sneezed. She was part of the conspiracy! OOOPS, wrong conspiracy.
If the Mavs thought it was their ball… wouldn’t they have someone taking it out of bounds ? The ball was out on that side, and the Mavs lined up on the opposite side to play D. If you think it’s your ball, all 5 guys don’t go to the other side of the court… they just forgot what basket they were defending.
Replay shows the Dallas player touched the ball while out of bounds so it was warriors ball. Not warriors fault for Dallas going to the wrong basket.
The other Ref was at the wrong basket too.. Now what?
What makes no sense is if it was called their ball they would have taken it under the basket where the warriors were. So why did they go under the wrong basket?
I understand that aspect, but wheres the refs integrity at the end of the day. If you see the opposing team and your referees on the opposite side of the court, maybe direct some traffic and notify them they should probably come back your way lol
Just coming from a competitive stand point with this type of playoff atmosphere… Ref don’t inbounds the ball for the warriors to score knowing that the opposing team is at the opposite rim. Everyone clearly was confused including the other two refs who weren’t even in their correct positions. One ref was all the way down on the opposite side of the court with the entire Mavs team while the other was prepared to jog up the court as soon as the ball was inbounds. Should’ve just taken the basket away and started the possession over
LOL Kyrie already having an impact on the Mavs. His protesting ways have rubbed off!!
Warriors finally win two road games in a row and can’t even celebrate
Officiating stinks all around. The league needs to seriously look it.. Referees are choosing to call fouls where they should not be and letting other teams dictate the game so refs favor them Regardless Warriors were given the game as refs favored them. I have seen it for too many years. Our announcers even say at times wher was the foul or should have been a no call. Granted Dallas bad team to refs so Golden state needs win so give to them.Too much with refs not giving the calls fairly for other team or more. I can sure see why Van Vleet spoke out. Owners need to call out NBA and have the refs call these games right and fairly. So good for Cuban standing up for his team
What game were you watching? Did you see Lamb get tripe and pushed down and no call. Powell was under the basket for 6 seconds no call. Luka and Poole fighting for a ball and the foul was on Poole even though he caught the ball? Luka traveled 3 times no calls.
Didn’t “officiating stinks all around” cover the minutia of detail you just provided?
The NBA is mucking-up their product, the referee’s being terrible is not new, or is it a secret the games are rigged through the referree’s.
Its too easy. A travel here, a foul there, and you can give another team 5 extra possessions a half without anyone noticing, if you are good.
The refs are paid bag-men doing the dirty deeds of the NBA, and its new gambling revenue is not going to improve the situation.
Expect more of this nonsense in the play-offs when there will be some big money to be had when the games end defying the odds.
I do wonder with the influence of gambling has made the NBA refs even worse. Its been getting worse this year.
They need extra refs watching video at all times to correct anything that is wrong on court…
It’s too fast of a game to rely on humans alone… Get the tech in there…
They have tech that they intentionally fumble-finger, and make excuses as to why they don’t use its full capability, why it doesn’t catch everything.
If the NBA wanted transparency the tech would be in the game already.
You can always count on the refs giving GSW a helping hand, right?
You can always count on casuals hating on GSW without any basketball knowledge at all, right?
Nah I know a lot about basketball and still don’t like the warriors. They’re boring af
Mark Cuban is a knob
NBA = Pro Wrestling. It’s all rigged.
That’s soooooo clever, did you come up with that all by yourself? Hope your mommy gave you an extra cookie with your juice after nap time for that.
Couldn’t agree more. Its politics, entertainment, celebrity, melo-dramatics, fake, and rigged from the beginning all the through until the end.
Its not sports, its narratives, agenda’s, and illegal tampering to bolster gambling revenue.
It took me along time to realize that WWE and NBA do the same thing
Pro wrestling* rigged
Mark from Cuba has failed Luka…
He’s clutching at straws to make it look like he’s doing everything he can to get Luka help…
#FreeLuka
It was a horrible game for the referees. They missed call after call late in the 4th quarter and gave the game to the Warriors.
Curry shot 0 free throws. Luka shot 10 free throws. Dallas shot 10 more free throws in the game so tell me more. Lamb gets pushed down from behind and no call in the 4th that led to a 3 point shot.
Mavs clearly forgot who had which basket. They set up to play D in their own end. The protest will lose cuz NBA will say that you didn’t even know which end was which. They want to blame 3 refs but had 5 idiots of their own. 5 is more than 3. 5 wins idiot vote
