Veteran guard Gary Payton II is making “good progress” in his recovery from a right adductor injury, but still isn’t close to playing for the Warriors, the team announced on Monday evening (Twitter link).
According to the Warriors’ announcement, Payton has been doing daily physical rehab work with the training staff to strengthen his adductor/core and has also begun taking part in various on-court activities, including shooting. The plan is for him to intensify his on-court workouts in the coming days to see how he responds.
He’ll be reevaluated in 10 days, per the club.
Payton was at the center of the most controversial trade of the 2022/23 season, failing his physical with Golden State last month after the team agreed to reacquire him from Portland at the deadline. The Warriors weighed their options during the weekend after the trade deadline and ultimately decided to move forward with the deal rather than nixing the entire four-team agreement.
Payton, who underwent adductor surgery during the offseason, had returned to action for the Trail Blazers and appeared in 15 games this season, but was said to be playing through pain. The Warriors didn’t realize the full extent of his adductor issues and were unable to amend the terms of the trade after the deadline had passed.
Even though Payton will be reevaluated next Thursday, there’s no guarantee he’ll be cleared to play at that point. Still, the Warriors reportedly remain hopeful that he’ll be ready to go before the postseason tips off next month.
Golden State has won seven of its last 10 games, strengthening its position in the Western Conference playoff race. The Dubs are now 36-33, good for fifth in the West. They hold a one-game lead on the seventh-place Timberwolves and a 2.5-game cushion on the 11th-seeded Thunder.
This basically tells us that GP2 will be indeed play in postseason. Big morale booster for the team! Go Warriors!!
One of the biggest morale boosters I see is that JaMychael Green is finally shooting the ball well and playing the way they thought he would when they signed him. Only took all season to get to this point.
Goes to the Warriors.
Makes “speedy” recovery, just like Steph.
Nothing to see here, folks. Nothing suspicious at all…
While on Portland he is healthy and playing. So its sounds like you are accusing Portland of drugging their players.
Payton II was never healthy by his own admission, along with admininstering himself pain killers to play. The warriors also claimed 2-3 months Payton would miss, and now it’s 6-7 weeks.
This has all been reported already, why the bad gossip that has already been cleared up?
I guess that would be the definition of a fanatic
they said 2 months and its been over 1 month already. Second Portland said he was not injured. Sounds like you have a beef to grind with GSW.
He missed most of the season when in Portland and was on injury report basically every game he played.
1st- the media narrative was 2-3 months before, and during the time the warriors had to rescind the trade. The prognosis, and Payton II’s admission to taking pain meds, and not telling the Portland medical team came after that time.
2nd- Its disingenuous in the least to claim Portland cleared Payton II when he was intentionally misleading them with pain meds in order to play. By his own admission. I’d call you a liar, but I’m not gonna
Lastly, I think you have the beef, axe to grind, and agenda to spread lies about this, or intentionally provoke a response.
Payton has barely been out a month since the trade, 10 more days makes 6 weeks.
Fix your facts, and your math, and my axe goes away.
they said 2 months hoping he will be back before playoffs. 3 months then he doesn’t play in the playoffs. So stop playing the drama queen rant.
Payton didn’t mislead them. They were pushing him to get back early. So are you saying their medical staff couldn’t tell? doesn’t sound like a good medical staff.
What axe do i have to grind? just pointing out that if GSW are drugging him like Lil D always claimed then Portland did the same. Learn reading comprehension. He is being re-evaluated in 10 days which doesn’t mean he will be back in 10 days. He needs to be able to practice and get in conditioning. So You are pretending the time line is different.
You are putting a lot of words out with no proof of claim. Its despicable if you actually believe this!
Your axe is the continual gem leaving out the part where Payton openly admitted he wanted to play, he is a gamer, and took Nsaids to play.
What test do you do for muscle injuries?
X-rays, MRI’s? You have no evidence of your claim. You have the drama queen rant story. You are the one with the Axe, and intentional ignorance of already established fact & information, so catch-up, or shut-up already!
Prove it, or move on lie-spreader
SMH do you have any evidence? NO So you just sit here and make up stuff. Stop all the drama. Next up you pretend Curry is on steroids like Lil D
“Curry’s play is out of this world.”
Out of this world = outerspace
Outerspace is filled with meteors and asteroids.
Asteroids = a steroid
How much more evidence do you need? There is no such thing in life as coincidence. Not in my book…
Yes, how many links do I need to post of Payton telling the media he is a gamer, he wanted to play, so he self-administered toradol.
His agent even publicly commented he didn’t get shots of toradol while with portland.
Later it was revealed, or thought to be an oral medication Payton II sought out, and self-prescribed.
Payton II admitting it isn’t evidence enough?
This site even posted these facts.
Look-up the archives yourself if you think I’m making a false claim.
Some people…
Your problem is you assume things. It was not about Portland but about a person claiming Curry takes steroids. Are you that lame you thought it is about Portland deal? Next time you see a post about A to B don’t make comments about C. It just makes you look like you have control issues. Which I see you do have control issues.
You’re problem is you don’t want logical, clear, comprehensive, communication.
You want to cause problems, and not clear anything up. So if I’m trying to communicate, and you’re trying to force a game on me without telling me?
Who is the control freak?
Stop saying Portland’s medical staff did anything wrong to Payton II, and I’ll stop repyling with facts, and truthful information to combat your disinformation, and outright bold-faced lies.
Do you have control problems? Why do you put words in a person’s mouth when they didn’t say that? When you respond to a person you stay on track not change subjects. You have a BIG reading comprehension problem. You just want to argue with people and make things up. Please do not reply to my post anymore that would show control problems.
I’d guarantee Curry has been on steroids many times in his career for the ankle problems.
Common medication for that injury…
This is so shocking that GPII is making this amazing recovery from this despicable injury that the Blazers medical staff and front office covered up. I am truly amazed at what the Warriors medical staff has been able to do with his recovery.
Just a true shining example for all other teams in the league.
He has been out for over a month. He will probably be out 2 months total so how is this amazing?
Obviously you don’t understand sarcasm.
Payton has basically got paid $8.3 million this year or $32,549 per minute if he doesn’t play another game this season, while Dame with the same injury and surgery during the off season is being paid $216 per minute.
The biggest sham is Payton and his so called inability to play this year. I guarantee if the playoffs started tomorrow, he’d have no problem suiting up and playing.
Wow warriors last night looked great, if Wiggins can get up to speed and GPii then I think the west will be an easy steal for them.
Not sure about that. It’s going to be a dog fight in both conferences. Nothing easy for anyone and it’s probably the team that is the healthiest that advances.
And if it was so easy why did the Warriors lose a 20-point lead to a phoenix team who came within a couple points without Kevin Durant? Any playoff series win by the Warriors will be hard fought and a super accomplishment.
An easy steal for them? They can’t win a game on the road and will probably not have home court in any series.
Not just the West, but the championship. Curry is the best player since Jordan. The game is too easy for him.
Convert Lamb! They completely changed rotation when he maxed out at 50games…
I’m sure they will but for these last 10 or 15 games they want to see what else they have before doing so. It’s a good chance to look at other rotations.
They want to be flexible just in case of injuries. If Curry or Poole has serious injury, it will be Jerome getting converted. The other reason is they want to save every dime. Lamb will get converted at the very of the season. He deserves it and Warriors need him asap.
