Memphis’ season came to a screeching halt on Friday night as the Grizzlies were thoroughly lambasted by the Lakers in the sixth and final game of their first-round series, losing by 40 points. Head coach Taylor Jenkins referred to the No. 2 seed’s early exit as “the ultimate wake-up call,” as ESPN’s Tim MacMahon relays.
“Are we going to really understand that it’s the preparation and the offseason, the preparation in the season?” Jenkins said. “It’s what you do at work, off the court — clearly, there are things that we’ve got to control and just embrace it together. How are we going to support each other throughout all this stuff?
“This is a journey that you go through from the start of the season to the end of the season, and it’s not supposed to be easy, any of it. So are we going to take it lightly and take it for granted or we going to take a real hard look at the mirror?”
Here’s more on the Grizzlies:
- Star point guard Ja Morant acknowledged that his off-court behavior — which included an eight-game suspension in March due to a gun-related incident, among several others — negatively impacted the team this season, MacMahon adds in the same story. “I’ve just got to be better with my decision-making,” said Morant, who finished with 10 points on 3-of-16 shooting in the blowout defeat. “That’s pretty much it. Off-the-court issues affected us as an organization pretty much. Just [need] more discipline.”
- Morant also took accountability for his “I’m fine in the West” comment from earlier in the season being used against him now, notes Damichael Cole of The Memphis Commercial Appeal (Twitter link). “I don’t mind. I said it. I’ll deal with it,” Morant said.
- For the third time in the series, all after losses, forward Dillon Brooks refused to speak publicly after the game. He left the locker room before the media was permitted to enter, tweets MacMahon. Brooks, an unrestricted free agent this summer, was up to his usual trash-talking antics early in the series after evening it at one game apiece, calling LeBron James “old” and saying he was past his prime. Obviously that came back to bite the Grizzlies, as the Lakers went on to win three of the next four games.
- Injuries to key players like Morant (hand), Steven Adams (knee), Brandon Clarke (torn Achilles), and Luke Kennard (who missed Game 6 with shoulder soreness) certainly were a factor in the series, but the team’s lack of maturity and attention to detail were arguably bigger issues, according to Joe Vardon of The Athletic.
- Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today makes a similar case, writing that Memphis’ biggest offseason goal should be “growing up” emotionally.
grizzly players found out how tough the NBA playoff are. None of the teams had a easy playoff run. Next time they need to win first before proclaiming how great they are.
Alright Arc, help another HR brotha out
Put some cheese on GSW down 0-2 at 6:1, can sell ticket at about a 1:1 ratio right now for a 3x profit
Sell the ticket today or go for that 6x prize and hold?
Sell the tickets closer to game time for even more bucks. You have 2 teams that have fans with unlimited deep pockets. Go for the gold.
Think we talking 2 different things-
I have a betting ticket not gameday arena ticket
Asking how confident you are GSW pulls out a win
Team has been frustrating this season. They played terrible game 6 with no sense of urgency. Its all going to come down to if the hit their 3s they win if they shoot poorly they lose big. Truth is its a toss up on who wins.
I thought the keys to the series was going to be Tyus Bane and Kennard
Tyus played about as bad as he could , Kennard was horrific , and while Bane had some good games he had some really bad ones as well
JJjr’s quickness was next level on D tho, Lakers looks on their faces was priceless thinking they had an easy floater and seeing this beast send it the other way-
GSW/Sac have none of that, stay thristy LAL, paint is wide open next series !
No steve Adams in the middle was the key to the series. Not enough offensive players on Memphis to cause Lakers to play good D. Both GSW and Kings have offense that will make the old guys on lakers to run back and forth. Nobody can stop Fox or Curry on lakers.
Pure guess, but I dont think Adams meant that much for this series, think Clarke probably would have been the bigger loss- Tillman played well, really well tbh abnd provided a tad extra spacing than Adams would have
* Nobody matches up well w Fox or Curry but I will say Vando and Schroeder and good bets to keep them contained to norm levels- Vando could give Klay fits imo- Both teams have zero answers for AD. Ad imo tucks tail a tad around Alpha males such as JJjr ….not hating on GSW/Sac they just dont have a fella like JJJr ….not many do
The loss of Adams was huge. #1 offensive rebounder in the league and 11.5 per game – in 3 of the 4 Grizzlies losses, they were out-rebounded.
On top of that, he’s arguably one of the best screen setters in the league. It was obvious they missed it with how much they struggled in the half court – Ja couldn’t get good looks without Big Steve opening them up.
Grizz offense also runs through Adams playmaking. One of the best passing bigs in the game, especially out of the high post. On top of that, he’s a tone setter. Big loss. Combine that with Clarke and you’re starting your 5th big at the 5 vs AD because Aldama has his strengths but isn’t a 5. Tough situation but still disappointing they put out such a bad effort in g6.
“For the third time in the series, all after losses, forward Dillon Brooks refused to speak publicly after the game.“
This is what a Bit h ars looks like …. Talk talk but can’t walk the waik. Gotta be one of dumbest moves I’ve ever seen in playoffs. Your team is down players. And you are going after the greatest scorer in the History of the gm. Dumb n dumber …….
I wouldn’t resign him.
He’s had his 15 mins of fame…
Now he’s a walking meme…
Personally I like the edge that Memphis has. They just need more/better scorers. Simple as that. If Brooks is taking multiple 3’s in a quarter that means your team doesn’t have enough scoring.
That edge is immaturity…
Nothing special…
Just a bunch of wannabes who act like they’ve won 5 rings…
Memphis is not a serious contender as is. They need another star. They were down 3-1 to the Lakers and Warriors. Also struggled vs the Timberwolves
Memphis has too many issues, they really need to overhaul the roster so that they aren’t so reliant on Ja playing hero ball… Plus the culture seems to be in the dumpster…
Having another star could definitely help… But it’s probably time for a coach that will provide discipline…
“Injuries to key players like Steven Adams (knee), Brandon Clarke (torn Achilles), and Luke Kennard (missed Game 6 with shoulder soreness) certainly played a factor in the series”
I guess Ja Morant isn’t a Key player?
Anyways, definitely disappointing. The injuries hurt them, including Morant who played with a shooting hand injury. But I hate to say it, I think the Lakers exposed them. Which isnt a bad thing consider how young they are. There is plenty of time to evolve.
They need to add a couple pieces. Definitely another big in the event bigs like Adams and Clarke get hurt. Nothing fancy, something like what Biyombo is for Phoenix. Guy that can give JJJr a rest and help him out on the court so he’s not playing the whole game on an island. I know bigs aren’t as important as they used to be, but they are still necessary. And they are usually the first ones to go down with injury or at best, get worn down in the playoffs.
The second thing is they need another Luke Kennard, but one with more experience. Someone the same size who can knock down shots and handle the ball. I like Bane and Brooks but they are not reliable ball handlers. And ideally you always have two ball handlers on the floor. Right now they only have three and that’s if they are all healthy. And it’s hard to consistently play Ja and Tyus together because of the size. But they need to add at least one more to take pressure of Ja and allow him to play off the ball more
I feel everyone wants someone like Kennard just not Luke Kennard lol –
I don’t know much behind the scenes with the guy or much about the game 6 inj but….soreness ?? Idk, hate to speculate just to speculate but it rings soft to the 99% of us not in the super -know
The Grizzlies showed how important a good team environment is…
Have a terrible culture and it shows up when it’s playoff time…
Ship out brooks
Trade for savvy vets who will teach JJJ and JA to act like men.
Whilst I did say above that a new coach could bring in discipline I also know that coaches can’t really do that in this league…
Someone like PJ Tucker could put these kids in their place…
The King has spoken ……
