Going into Wednesday’s Game 2, there were indications that Ja Morant‘s right hand injury had healed enough for him to play, writes Joe Vardon of The Athletic. In a meeting with reporters shortly before game time, Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins said his star guard was “feeling a little bit better,” adding that he just had to clear some tests regarding his grip and his ability to dribble.
The announcement that Morant would miss the game was made about an hour before tipoff. Jenkins explained that the team decided to be cautious with the injury, which an MRI revealed involves soft tissues between the bones in Morant’s hand.
“He got all the testing and was still battling some soreness, a little pain,” Jenkins said. “It’s just a collective decision. We all decided that, and obviously he’s a warrior, he wants to be out there, would do anything to be out there, but we just felt like hey, just given all the testing results, give him this game and just wait a couple more days in between.
“We’re hopeful that with the progress he’s making the last couple of days, you know, he’ll be back sooner rather than later. Can’t guarantee when that’s going to be, but it was just one of those things that we just couldn’t, you know, pull it to have him in tonight.”
The series will resume Saturday night in Los Angeles.
There’s more injury news to pass along:
- It was also close to game time Wednesday when the Bucks determined that Giannis Antetokounmpo wouldn’t be available, per Jim Owczarski of The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Antetokounmpo had been upgraded to questionable, but the team opted to not to take a risk with his injured back. “I told him this morning, like, I know you’re going to want to come back but if you don’t, just know we got you,” Jrue Holiday said. “Again, our team has the ultimate confidence in each other and we know how Giannis is. We know Giannis is going to try and make that Superman effort and come back and play 48 minutes and do what he does, but like I said, we can hold down the fort until he comes back.”
- The Warriors are listing Andrew Wiggins as questionable for Thursday’s Game 3 with soreness in his right shoulder, tweets Jason Anderson of The Sacramento Bee. Wiggins has been dealing with the shoulder issue since the postseason began, but he was able to play 39 minutes in Game 2.
- Backup point guard Cameron Payne remains questionable for the Suns in Game 3, tweets Law Murray of the Athletic, who adds that coach Monty Williams indicated that Payne has to overcome “movement-related hurdles” before he can play again.
Team is a better TEAM without Morant
This is a narrative that at times has truth to it. But what makes Ja really good, are the times when he has been out, he has learned from the team without him and recognizes others strengths, then incorporates them when he comes back making them better.
If he does actually come back, watch out. They winning the championship
No, not really. Especially in the playoffs. The Grizz were great last year without Morant at 20-5 but this season they went a mediocre 7-7.
Sure the defense is great with or without him on the court but Morant brings something to the offense it simply lacks when he’s not there. Tyus Jones is great at bringing the ball up the court and not turning it over but few players have the athleticism and explosiveness of Morant. He’s a distributor but more importantly in a playoff atmosphere he can create separation and get his own shot off which is crucial come crunch when games come down to a possession battle.
The Lakers did what they needed to and split the games in Memphis but we’ll have to wait and see what happens when and if Morant comes back. Either way this one’s going to 6 or 7 games.
Warriors in 7!
I hate to say it because they’ve been very fun to watch over the last decade but it’s going to be a gentlemen’s sweep. Curry wil ball out and carry them in game 3 but this is the swan song with this current iteration of the Warriors.
I understand stand though. You’re a fan, you gotta have faith.
Dont overreact. It will be a total different story at Chase. Kings might still win the series, but not without a fight til the end. Long way to go… many teams have come back down 0-2.
I don’t think Home court is gonna matter too much with a veteran team. Maybe, but it flies in the face of past NBA playoff trends.
I don’t think the Warriors can handle or match the defense of the Kings. Green was a sign of that reality, and frustration in my opinion.
I think a sweep is most definitely in play, and other than the sportsbook cleaning up I can’t see how the warriors can win game 3 without Green?
Looney is a fine player, but he doesn’t occupy the same defensive role Green does, and ball movement will be affected on offense. Not ideal in a playoff game.
Lots of eyes on game 3 for sure
No way the Warriors are going to be swept.
Home court does matter in the playoffs. That’s why teams always aim for getting the highest seed.
You’re delsuional if you think they’ll be swept.
Warriors win the next two.
I’m replying to my own post.
I told you Warriors win the next 2.
Series tied at 2-2.
Lol so much for that sweep.
They’ll Green and hopefully Gary Payton II back for game 4.
Sportsbook is offering better paying odds on the Warriors to win, than they are on a Kings sweep.
The sportsbook is encouraging Warriors win the series bets, and discouraging betting on the sweep.
Thats when I’d bet the sweep
Many people are going to eat crow.
Lol “Sweep”
“Kangs in 5”
That Latino Heat guy has been awfully quiet.
All Memphis got to do is attack AD weak self. He’s too soft. I want to see JJJr just get relentless.
Ja tried that approach and reinjured his hand… so…
No way Grizz should win this series without Ja. But what is going on with Russell……
He’s MIA if you ask me.
gm1 — 36 mins, 19 pts, 4 reb, 7 ast
gm2 — 30 mins, 5 pts, 7 reb, 4 ast
He should be dominating this series with no Morant. Let’s see how he does in LA.
Dlo is overrated…
At best tops out as a 6th man gunner…
It used to be said that a 7 game series doesn’t even begin until there’s a win by the road team. That kind of went by the boards with a few 7 game series that ended without a win by the road team.
In any event, quite a few teams have won a 7 game series after losing the first 2 on the road. It wouldn’t be shocking in a #3 vs #6 matchup. It’s also true that first time playoff teams (like SAC) often run into issues as a series rolls along. Not predicting a GSW series win, but this is NOT over.
The 2 dirtiest teams in the league…
Hard to pick a winner…
Why is this here?
Righto…
Those who said Kings were going to sweep Warriors, how does that crow taste lol.
Warriors are up 3-2.
