Despite the Mavericks‘ disappointing season, it sounds like both head coach Jason Kidd and general manager Nico Harrison will remain with the team for 2023/24.
Team owner Mark Cuban said earlier this week that the Mavs intend to bring back Kidd for a third season. As for Harrison, league sources tell Marc Stein (Substack link) that Cuban is pleased with the work that the longtime Nike executive has done since transitioning to a front office role. While the Mavs have faced criticism for a handful of roster moves – including losing Jalen Brunson and Kyrie Irving – Stein suggests that Harrison doesn’t need to worry about his job security at this point.
Here’s more on the Mavs from Stein:
- Stein’s “up-to-the-minute sense” is that the Mavericks won’t attempt to re-sign big man Christian Wood in free agency this offseason. Noting that Dallas intends to make some roster changes over the summer, Stein identifies JaVale McGee and Tim Hardaway Jr. as two veterans who could find themselves back on the trade block.
- There’s “considerable skepticism” around the NBA that the Mavs will take a hard-line stance and insist on a short-term deal in their negotiations with Kyrie Irving, according to Stein, who says early rumblings suggest the team may offer a three- or four-year contract to the star guard.
- If the Mavericks retain their 2023 first-rounder (which they owe to New York with top-10 protection), they’re expected to explore their trade options with that pick, sources tell Stein. A loss to San Antonio today would ensure Dallas has nearly an 80% chance to hang onto that pick — those odds could climb even higher if Utah wins and Dallas loses today.
Mavs have to sign Kyrie. 4yrs with team option in 4th yr. I wouldn’t give him the max. But Mavs haven’t much choice.
That pick can get CC Jackson. A serious 4 who can play small ball center. He’s perfect if they don’t keep Wood. Or they can use it in a trade. Jackson is a nice talent. Plenty of teams would want him. 10th is valuable pick , as it should be every yr…….
If they let Wood walk. They should sign Grant. He doesn’t need the ball to score 20. He’d fit right in with Luka n Kyrie. Plus he plays D.
With what money do they sign Grant? You do understand that some teams needs to take on Hardaway, McGee or a combination of both without sending cash back to open up enough space to at least be in the Jerami Grant game. Even at that they likely would not be the highest bidder for his services.
Nico has dropped the ball with this squad, and how he is safe in his job is beyond me. Sure, Kyrie was the cheapest Superstar on the market for trade for, but he’s a horrible fit next to Luka. Dallas should really look at the Magic model from D12’s prime. Put four shooters around Luka who don’t need the ball in their hands any longer to catch and shoot.
I’m not sure there is any money to sign Grant. Only way to that end will be through a sign and trade.
None of what dallas is doing is to free up cap space. If they are, that is pretty dumb.
I disagree AL but good chance this is what ultimately happens in the end
I’m jumping ship if I’m Cuban
0% chance Kyrie stays. He will want max money and even if it’s not offered he will sign elsewhere. Why sign for the team that ranked to miss the playoffs? Plus since he joined their record was like 8-16 or something terrible.
Why hang around for that?
As for Jackson yeah he’s a good prospect but he’s not going to deliver right away. He is one of the youngest prospects in this class having just turned 18. He shot terrible from the field and was poor from 3 and FT’s. He also went like 11-21 this year, he’s not going to contribute right away, he’s a prospect and a project. I think he will turn into a good player but not right away.
Then as for other roster moves, Wood is on 14mil so there’s literally no way the money works for you to let him walk and sign Grant at that price. You’d be lucky to get Harrison Barnes at the price and I doubt he’s coming back.
The fact this GM has been in charge and gone from Brunson Dinwiddie DFS and the conference finals to all three gone, Kyrie and Wood likely gone and missing the playoffs completely in 1 season, I’d sack him without hesitation.
The big question is what other GM is dumb enough to give Kyrie the max?
The Mavs don’t have to give Kyrie 3 years… He’s old and constantly injured, he needs to prove he can stay on the floor…
Add that to his constant off court stupidity and his phone ain’t going to be rining if the Mavs do their due diligence…
Knicks want the league to investigate Mavs so Knicks get the Mavs first round pick?
Mavs have 72 million coming off the books next yr. Not a problem. Plus their own FA (Bird rights). They can over cap for. Mavs have options. Mine is not a bad one.

Cubes,
Day of reflection, its time to hit the red button
Id look at the Clippers this offseason once they get bounced by Phx –
With the new Ballmer exceptions crackdown they might be interested taking on some players with years behind them for their expiring’s. I personally think Clips will go Big game hunting but if nothing comes of that
Gordon and Morris, both expiring 37 mill, could get 7 years of Kleber (3) Hardaway (2) and Mcgee (2) 35 mill . No draft picks involved
Dallas could wipe everything clean except the 5 mill Bertans b/o by 25 and start fresh . I would offer KI and Wood nothing but a handshake for their past services
Karma for Cuban. Love it!
Mark from Cuba deserves to be kicked out of the league…
This isn’t karma… This is just bad management…
