Nets general manager Sean Marks says the changes he’ll make this offseason will be designed to make the roster bigger and meaner, according to Brian Lewis of the New York Post. The team ranked among the league’s worst in overall rebound percentage and defensive rebounding percentage.
“Without a doubt we need to make some changes in terms of adding some size. I think (coach Jacque Vaughn) said it (Saturday) night, add a little nastiness,” Marks said. “Without a doubt we need to make some changes. Add a little bit of the Brooklyn grit that we’ve talked about for sort of six years.”
We have more on the Nets:
- In the same Lewis story, Marks remarked that he anticipates Ben Simmons to be 100 percent physically “probably by September 1st.” Marks has stated he doesn’t believe Simmons will require another back surgery. Marks also expressed confidence that Mikal Bridges can be the No. 1 scoring option going forward. “Regarding Mikal, I think he’s proven to a lot of people that his role can continue to get better and better and bigger and bigger, so I think I would be pretty silly to be up here and limit him and say he cannot be something,” Marks said. “I think that a few people have had their eyes opened to what he can do.”
- Re-signing restricted free agent Cameron Johnson is a high priority for Marks, Lewis writes in a separate story. Johnson, who was acquired in the Kevin Durant blockbuster, is not only a crucial piece on the court but a popular locker room presence. “Everybody sees what he delivers on the court, but when you see him in the locker room, it’s certainly refreshing to be around, and hopefully he’s here,” Marks said. “But he’s going to have decisions to make, so at the right time, we will certainly be having those discussions with him and his agent, and we hope that Cam will be back. He’s a big priority for us, there’s no question.”
- Thanks to dealing their superstars, the Nets have plenty of draft capital. Will they use it to pursue another star like Damian Lillard in a blockbuster deal? Perhaps, but Marks isn’t committed to that approach, Lewis writes. “That could happen, but at the same time, I don’t think we’re in any hurry. We’re not going to be pushed to make changes just for the sake of making changes.”
- Speaking of those draft picks, the Nets own the 21st and 22nd selections in the first round this June but some of the future first-rounders they acquired could eventually land higher. That potential scenario entices Marks, Alex Schiffer of The Athletic notes. “That’s one of the exciting things for us going forward, knowing that there’s only three other teams in the league that have more first-round picks than us from now until 2030.” he said. “So, that’s part of the pathway, right? This group has shown an ability to to draft well, and the coaches have shown an ability to really develop players well. So for me, looking forward to that is exciting.”
Did any other high paid, high profile player fall further and faster than Ben Simmons? He was quite valuable even without great shooting stats for years with Philly. Now? Almost unplayable.
Boogie?
Boogie wasn’t on a max contract.
Not what he asked
wall.
Nets should model next season after the Jazz of this year. Don’t go into tank mode, build that winning culture, cultivate your star in Mikal, and see what things look like a year from now. Young guys, there is no rush. They have picks. Lillard would be a boneheaded acquisition but I’m sure ^ is just clickbait anyway so I shouldn’t even DIGNIFY IT WITH A COMMENTT
But you did…
2 unprotected 1sts starts any Ben Simmons trade. Idk why you’d waste time too, find a trade partner. Either you include several more picks and you land a premier player or you trade him to a team looking to tank for 1 or 2 guys that might actually contribute.
Huh? Are you suggesting a team would have to give up two unprotected 1st’s to get Ben Simmons? Or did you mean a team willing to take on Simmons’ contract would be given two unprotected 1st’s in return?
I think he means the unprotected firsts with Ben, not for Ben. That would be the starting point in a trade for Dame because the Nets would need to match salaries as close as possible. I’d have to check spotrac but I’m guessing DFS and Royce O’Neale would have to be added to Simmons and three first rounders for Dame. That said, I don’t think the Nets will make that move.
Haha you think it’s the Nets who pass on the ridiculous trade?
1 player making max who is unplayable, 2 role players that played like crap in the playoffs, and 3 pick all likely late lottery.
For a top 3 PG in the league. Lol!!!!
Let me help you. If you want Dame. It starts with resigning Cam J to about 20 plus. Then adding him and maybe, and Can Thomas. Plus those pick unprotected.
That will keep you from getting hung up on by the Blazers GM.
Adding Claxton in the deal. Will get you a serious seat at the table
While I agree it would cost more, the deal you mentioned the Nets wouldn’t even consider either.
Very rarely does a team ever get what the player they are trading away is actually worth in trades. In fact, the Nets did an excellent job getting that return from the Suns, and that was for KD…
I just don’t see the Nets swinging for a Dame trade just yet. I think they’d only do it if Lillard demanded a trade, thus lessening his value..
Can’t sign and trade and include additional players. Cam
Wouldn’t be trade eligible till Jan
@Simmons Russ, I didn’t say sign and trade him. I said resign him. And yes they would have to wait I think most people know that too. ;)
The nets would have to attach 2 unprotected 1st with ben in any trade. Boy has the worst contract in the league. And he still has some years left. Most likely they make a move for dame or tre and move him in that deal to make the money work. If not there’s reports that San Antonio has interest in taking on his contract but again they want picks.
I would bet the rent money that Simmons will NOT be ready on opening night!
i’ll take that bet

Our gm is Sean Marks. I can almost guarantee it. this is the same guy who chose bum Simmons over K.D , Kyrie and harden! He chose Vaughn over ime! He chose Nash over WELL EVERYONE! he drafted cam Thomas and got a coach who won’t let em play. Drafted Jarret Allen just to trade em for a washed up harden. Traded KYRIE to bring back a guy he could have kept in the 1st place in dinwiddie. Yea I can guarantee he’s going to mess this up.
This team has the perfect recipe for a tank season…
They have a budding young group and a black hole on the salary sheets…
Getting a trade partner for Simmons is going to be the hard work here… Once the Nets do that they can move out of tank mode…
Otherwise they’ll be shooting themselves in the foot…
they cant tank – Houston owns their unprotected picks
