Following a disappointing Game 7 loss to the Heat on Monday, the Celtics face some significant offseason decisions, writes Sopan Deb of The New York Times. Jaylen Brown‘s contract situation looms largest among those decisions, as his All-NBA berth this spring made him eligible for a super-max extension.
Boston will have to decide whether to put that offer – which could be worth nearly approximately $295MM over five years – on the table for Brown, who will be entering the final year of his current deal in 2023/24. While he didn’t specifically address the financial details of a potential Celtics offer, Brown’s co-star Jayson Tatum said after Monday’s loss that it’s crucial the team locks up Brown beyond next season.
“He’s one of the best players in this league,” Tatum said. “He plays both ends of the ball and still is relatively young. And he’s accomplished a lot so far in his career. So, I think it’s extremely important.”
For his part, Brown wasn’t ready to address his contract situation in the wake of Monday’s loss.
“I don’t even really know how to answer that question right now, to be honest,” Brown said, according to Tim Bontemps of ESPN. “My thought process is take it one day at a time, focus on getting better. Focus on what the future holds and see where we are from there.”
Here’s more on the Celtics after they fell short of their second consecutive NBA Finals appearance:
- Tatum sprained his ankle during the first minute of Game 7 on Monday. Although he remained in the game, Tatum admitted after scoring just 14 points on 5-of-13 shooting that he was “a shell of myself,” per Bontemps. “It was tough to move,” Tatum said. “Just frustrating, it happening on the first play.”
- Game 6 hero Derrick White will undergo an MRI on his left leg, which he injured in the second half of Game 7, writes Bontemps. “I mean, I’ll be fine,” White said. “I’m not too worried about it. But I’ll find out more (on Tuesday).”
- Despite the disappointing end to their season, the Celtics raved on Monday about how the locker room stuck together after the team fell behind 3-0 in the Eastern Conference Finals against Miami. As Jay King of The Athletic writes, Brown referred to it as “one of the most together groups that we’ve had,” while head coach Joe Mazzulla said it was “one of the best locker rooms” he has been a part of. “Obviously, we didn’t achieve our goal; we didn’t win, which was our goal,” Mazzulla said. “So, we failed in that regard, but it’s not because the guys didn’t have a sense of togetherness, character and just who they are as people.”
- Robert Williams, who played just 14 minutes in Game 7, was battling an illness on Monday, a league source tells Jared Weiss of The Athletic. Weiss observes within the same story that Malcolm Brogdon was “clearly too injured to play” on Monday after missing Game 6 due to a forearm injury. Brogdon, a minus-15 in just seven minutes in Game 7, confirmed that he has a partially torn tendon in his right elbow and said he’d consider undergoing offseason surgery (Twitter link via Weiss).
- Yossi Gozlan of HoopsHype and ESPN’s Bobby Marks (Insider link) previewed the offseason decisions facing the Celtics, including how to handle Grant Williams‘ impending restricted free agency.
We need to get a better coach and a true point guard!
Yeah, but what can you offer in a s&t for FVV?
Is FVV a true point guard? He’s better at passing than Smart, but a less efficient scorer, somehow. Is the accompanying drop in defense worth it?
Ok here come the excuses…
Tatum injured, white hurt, brogden hurt — Williams diarrhea
Suck it up right HEAT AND SIXERS fans. F OFF Boston.
It’s amazing how the Lakers and Celtics own so many heads.
Tyler Herro was out. Oladipo was out. Kevin Love and Zeller played like they were out.
Brown has his flaws, but he’s better than anything they could get in exchange. Lillard isn’t going anywhere. Simons and the 3rd pick isn’t going to keep their window open. They aren’t trading him to any team in the East. Kawahi or PG would get hurt, and I’m not convinced PG is better than Brown anyway.
One of the things nobody seems to really be talking about is that the Celtics have a window because of the way the new CBA hurts over-cap teams, and because of their roster itself. Grant Williams is a RFA this year, Robert Williams and Brogdon are going to accrue more injuries. Smart has hit his ceiling. Horford is going to decline. They have next year, and *maybe* the year after, and then their window is closed relative to other improving teams like the Cavs, Knicks, Magic, and Pacers. If they trade Brown now, does that actually help them to win?
They got all the talent but none of the IQ. Like I have said all along, Boston is overrated. Even with the help of A. Silver and the Refs, they couldn’t get it done. Exactly why I said Silver fixed the MIA/ATL game because he knew it would have led to a Boston first Rd exit.
As long as Stevens is in charge, Boston will never win.
Your’e right Brad Stevens has not won it all. But in his 10 years with the Boston Celtics Brad Stevens has rebuilt a 12th place team to almost winning it all the last two years. I think Stevens “will finish” what he’s started soon.
Three injuries, Gordon Haywood, Danilo Gallinari & now Jason Tatum has caused some issues. Myself, I can’t wait to see what President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens comes up with this offseason!
Go Celtics
As a 76ers fan, Boston’s problems start with Tatum. He relies on shooting 3s, when he could produce more edfieciently if he’d play more in the post. He’s very inconsistent, and makes the team inconsistent bc of it.
As a Celtic fan, I totally agree. But in my overall opinion, Coach needs to go. This team lives and dies by the three. This coach does not have any say with the players and he has no system. Look at the three pointer percentage in wins and loses. They can’t adjust and that’s on the coach.
Yep, Jason Tatum is inconsistent with his scoring & goes thru stretches with turnovers but he’s become a wonderful 2-way player. Tall & strong, he rebounds fantastically, assists very well & overall plays great defense! I hope he works on his floater over the offseason, stops short arming it but otherwise he’s terrific.
Go Celtics!
No shot against Brown, but he’s not a Max player. Way too guys are on the Max, I personally believe there are only a small handful of guys that deserve to be on the Max.
Embiid
Tatum
Giannis
Jokic
Durant
LeBron (short term Max, like two years)
Beal, Trae, LaVine, Harden, Dame, AD and others in that class should not be Max players. Guys who directly effect winning, are MVP candidates, and help sell the sport globally really should be the only guys that get paid Max dollars.
As for the C’s minus Brown, injuries can’t be an excuse. Jimmy played hurt, Vincent missed time, and it directly affected the Heat in game 5 by forcing Lowry into the starting lineup. The odds were against the C’s winning four straight, and the truth is had they won game 2 (which they should have), they would not be in the position they were last night with a winner take all game.
Also, the players were saying that this was the most together locker room they had been a part of. As that is the case, stop blaming Mazzulla for everything C’è fans. He’ll be a good HC, just get him a really experienced Lead Assistant to bounce ideas off of and don’t look back from there.
I think you forgot about Luka and Booker.
I agree that Brown is not worth the super-max. He is a good defender and scorer but he is lacking high IQ and playmaking skills. They absolutely should try to move him and/or Smart at least.
Mazzulla is not ready to be a championship coach … C’s offense is just about 3pts shooting now and hero ball … Good Luck to Spo for playing zone against Jokic.
Spo isn’t Doc Rivers. He’s going to have an actual plan and make adjustments. Are the Nuggets going to win? Yeah, almost certainly. Is it going to be as easy as people think? No way.
Miami record vs Jokic : 2W & 10L … No way it’s going to be easy. Heat deserve to be in the Finals no problem with that but if they want to win it all they need to stay the most effective 3pts team of these PO.
How could that be a together locker room? Players who got significant playing time when “stars” were hurt sat and watched the whole playoffs while starters played 40 minutes game after game. We already know Pritchard wanted to be traded. Grant Williams couldn’t be happy with his treatment during the Hawks series. Muscala was brought in to shoot 3’s, but never got the chance while the team was shooting 20%. Hauser shot well in many games, but was basically ignored in the playoffs. Robert Williams can’t be happy with his in and out of the lineup. Star players like Mazzulla because he lets them do whatever they want, but I bet the rest were not so happy with him.
It’s been hard for me to warm up to Coach Mazzulla. But from what I read he’s got the team. Not at all like some divisive comments I’ve read. So I’m all for Joe as our coach! I’ve also read he’s learning on the job which I like. Just get him some coaching help, DEFENSE. Boy, do I hate to see our Celtics give up those open, uncontested threes!
Go Celtics!
All these posts about certain players not being max contract guys. When you’re team is already operating above the cap what difference does it make if a top player is making the max or 5 million below? So let’s say Stevens gets stupid and offers Brown $5 million below the max. If he signs the team is still way over the cap and are handcuffed financially. If he say no and walks then the team is still over the cap and can’t replace him.
Boston should definitely trade Brown.
Detroit in a deal including the #5 pick
Go get Damian Lillard. Portland starts the much needed rebuild with Scoot Henderson and Jaylen Brown.
Maybe sign and trade Brown to the Thunder for picks and then use those picks to build up the roster in separate deals. Deal should definitely include #12 this year and Boston should target Cason Wallace.
There’s also the option or sign and trade for FVV in a deal involving Brown heading back to Raptors. Definitely a mega deal that could include Anunoby or Siakam.
Whatever happens Celtics should break up the Tatum and Brown combo.
Sure, blow up the team. But why? I mean we’ve almost won it all the last two years with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown as our young leaders. I can’t see why some Celtics fans say trade Brown, trade Smart, get a new coach. ???
I suggest trusting Brad Stevens implicitly.
Go Celtics!
A 5 team deal this summer that gets everyone what they want and need.
Knicks: KAT Grant Williams
Suns: Dame Nurkic
T’Wolves: RJ Barret Chris Paul Malcolm Brogden Celtics 1st, Blazers Top 5 protected 1st
Blazers: Ayton Julius Randle Knicks 1st
Celtics: Jerami Grant Immanuel Quickly
Fillers to make money work. Every team is happy and in better position for a future.
Interesting trade but I think Portland is getting crushed in this deal. Doubt they trade Dame & nurk for ayton and Randle. Really tough to make a 5 team deal work but could be close with some tweaks
Trailblazers receive Jaylen Brown and Mike Muscala
Celtics receive Lamelo Ball and Gordon Hayward
Hornets receive Shaedon Sharp, Jerami Grant, and number 3 overall
Great for the Hornets, but Portland gets hosed.
Jaylen Brown doesn’t play defense.
Doubt Portland is that high on him.
He plays enough defense to get an above-average rating by most numbers. But you’re still right, the Blazers don’t accept that trade. They aren’t giving up Grant and Sharpe for that kind of package, let alone #3.
Hornets ain’t getting rid of Lamelo
You don’t know that.
Let’s get a good coach and then go from there! I would consider trading Brown for Gilgrest. No way I am trading Brown for anyone over 30!
I know it’s just how it works in this league but still pretty tough for Jaylen to be in trade rumours.
He’s the number 2 option to Jayson Tatum and together they have gone to the NBA finals las year and this year game 7 of the ECF after trailing 3-0. For Jaylen, he was an all star and voted in all nba teams this year. Yes that means nothing come the playoffs but still he’s a pretty darn good player and more the most part has done pretty well as the second fiddle to Tatum.
I suppose it is only natural after falling short however…
From watching them against the Sixers then against the heat I think what they lack or don’t have is an elite ball handler and playmaker outside of Tatum who shouldn’t have to carry that burden. Brogdan does buts from the bench and Jaylen and Marcus try but it’s not natural for either. Tatum should be the number 1 scoring option and go to bucket getter, which he is. But he doesn’t exactly have someone beside him out there making his job easier leading the offence and creating better looks for others.
That’s were I guess Trae Young will appear in rumours.
Jaylen Brown and Derrick White for Trae Young, Saddiq Bey, Jalen Johnson and 2 first round picks.
Trae gives you the playmaking, ball handling and also 25-30 points a night. What he also brings is zero defence however so your asking a lot from Marcus Smart to cover for him in particular.
However he would make everyone’s job easier on offence and not only score himself but make scoring easier for everyone else. Plus you add a couple young wings/forwards that’ll be handy and a couple first round picks.
For ATL, Murray moves to PG, Jaylen Hunter Collins and Capela make the starting 5. White and Bogdan off the bench is a crazy duo, plus you have AJ and Okungwu. Just add a couple more veteran role players and your a top top side in the east too.
Boston once again didnt utilize their depth in matchups they needed to, and paid for it. I thought they could use 1 more piece on the wing, but in reality, they had more than enough, and they had more spacing on their bench that could have helped them in that area
I still contend that Jalen Brown is better than Tautm, slightly, and him, and Smart, and Horford, are significant reasons Tatum can be who he is in being conducive to winning, though I do think a lot of Tatum’s overall game is much underrated
Losing Grant Williams would be a big deal as a 4/5 that can defend most every position, and makes the right plays, and also spaces the floor for them in certain lineups. Significantly important to their versatility.
Those 2 things are extremely important, in my opinion, even before any outside additions
Brown was so focused becoming eligible for the supermax, that, now that he is, its hard to see him extending in BOS for anything less. It’s a simple YES/NO question for BOS, and they need to decide soon. Delaying the decision of whether to offer it is the equivalent of a NO. Tatum is up for a (later starting) super max extension of his own, so the issue is right there.
Mazulla the waterboy needs to go. He can’t coach. Last year Udoka utilized their bench. Mazulla don’t trust the bench and only use 7-8 players the whole playoffs. The starting five gets tired and waterboy don’t want to put Pritchard, Masculla and Hauser in, when Tatum and Brown played trash. Waterboy needs to go and hire a real coach.
Crazy how the 1st Super Max was 5/201 and 6 years later we’re at 5/295. 15.6M more per year? 47% above the 1st Super Max. In 6 more years will it be 5/433M?
