The Bucks and Suns are rumored to be interested in Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue, but he’s still under contract for two more seasons, though only one of those is thought to be guaranteed.
There’s growing skepticism among those close to the coach and the Clippers that a rival team would be able to poach Lue away, according to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports.
The Clippers still hope to contend for championships going forward despite another disappointing playoff exit in 2022/23, and owner Steve Ballmer is known to be a “huge fan” of Lue. As Fischer observes, the Bucks and Suns also don’t have much in the form of future first-round picks, which would likely be necessary to acquire Lue — assuming the Clippers would even permit a rival to interview him, and there’s no indication they would — while he’s still under contract.
The Bucks do have their 2029 first-rounder available, but Fischer suggests they’ll likely use it to acquire a player — either this offseason or in the future. Sources tell Fischer that Milwaukee contemplated dealing the pick to try to land Pistons forward Bojan Bogdanovic ahead of the February trade deadline.
Here are some more coaching rumors from around the NBA:
- Gregg Popovich, the longest-tenured head coach in the league, is expected to stay with the Spurs for as long as he wants to continue coaching, and there’s no indication that the Hall-of-Famer plans to retire next season, especially after San Antonio won the draft lottery. However, Popovich’s contract expired at the end of the season, and he hasn’t signed a new deal yet, sources tell Fischer.
- The fact that the Pistons have yet to hire one of their three coaching finalists has left coaching agents around the league wondering if they’ll reopen their search and consider more candidates, Fischer writes. The three finalists — Kevin Ollie, Charles Lee and Jarron Collins — met with owner Tom Gores last week, Fischer confirms. Detroit is thought to have interest in Monty Williams, who was fired by the Suns last week, so that might explain the holdup. That said, Adam Zagoria of ZagsBlog.com hears from sources that the job is expected to come down to either Ollie or Collins (Twitter link).
- According to Fischer, the Raptors hope to be “blown away” in an interview with one of their long list of coaching candidates. Toronto is believed to be open to an “unconventional” choice. Assistant coaches Jim Sann and Rico Hanes are expected to be retained regardless of who is named head coach, sources tell Fischer.
- Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated hears (via Twitter) that Ime Udoka “wants to do right” by his former Celtics assistants, and will extend those interested an invitation to join him with the Rockets after his unceremonious departure from Boston. Royal Ivey, who worked with Udoka on the Nets, recently joined his staff in Houston.
Popovich is the biggest fraud in the league. After Duncan and Kawhi he has done nothing. Been an embarrassment. When he took over team USA, he gave them one of their worst records in the history since NBA players have been involved and got destroyed by Patty Mills and Aron Baynes. This why they rigged the draft, cause the narrative of how good he is was starting to become exposed
Any team that wins a championship has a star player. A coach can’t play.
Obviously you never heard of Bill Russell. Prove me wrong?
#justcallmeKing
Another day, another trolling post by Kurtis.
“Let me call a hall of fame coach a fraud, then maybe someone will pay attention to me!”
Today is mental health action day. It might be worth speaking with a professional to understand why you seek validation through conflict like this — there has to be a healthier way. Life is short; take care of yourself.
I ain’t seeking validation, I’m seeking my money. Wheres my money Lil Dique?!!!!
Another day, another missed payment. Where’s my money?
#Coach Kurtis aka The Real Coach K aka The Big D
Funny, cause mills and baynes were coached by pop himself
True, but they suck unless they playing against him if course
You’re forgetting all the head coaches that have come from Pop’s tutoring. If he’s such a fraud then how does he produce so many high quality great coaches from his assistant ranks? The man knows how to spot talent.
However, he is ancient. Has been for a long time. The NBA takes a toll on people. He also saw how quickly Jerry Sloan deteriorated after he left the NBA. Probably fears that’ll happen to him.
Borrego, and Becky Hammon are great!
Wasn’t Udoka getting stepped over in favor of Becky Hammon also?
Now Hammon coaches in the WNBA. That investment into Hammon at the expense of the Spurs time & energy seems to have really paid off?
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Spurs asked her to coach in the WNBA to get some experience in the head chair. Wouldn’t shock me if she came back Pop’s last season as an assistant then took over the following year.
Belichek already proved that don’t mean nothing
I also think the Spurs have been waiting for the right player to build around. They keep trading away their veterans instead of building better teams. Look how well it paid off?
The only problem is now Pop is even more old than he was when he had Kawhi.
What he should do is maybe coach for one more year and then retire. That way he can go on a retirement tour and recruit the coach out there that he wants to see replace him. Either that or it’ll give the team a chance to do the same.
Otherwise, they’ll just keep losing all the successors to other teams. Can’t keep putting off retirement forever.
Wow scintillating thoughts.
Far more “scintillating” than your contribution.
Pop is way over-rated. Don’t even get me started…
Many players have had problems with whiney pants Pop. Draymond Green, and he are perfect for each other. Both have a familiar tone to their whine.
The admiral disagrees blow.
Admiral Robinson wishes to see you BLOW.
@blow
It’s called a rebuild (and his first one…ever?). Every team goes through it. And when you look at his tenure, record, streak, and other coaches that have assisted under him before moving on and winning championships themselves…yeah, the man earned his respect. And he’s done it in a small market where they don’t always get to attract top free agents. If not the greatest coach, he’s certainly up there.
I think you’re 100% accurate on the draft being rigged. It started with Ewing, and has been “adjusted” to help whichever team help “business”. . Ie: NO gives up AD, they got Zion. LeBron was from CLE, and they won the lottery to draft him. He left CLE, & CLE wins 3 lotteries in 4 years! The whole league is BS- you’ll see when the Lakers make this miracle championship run, to get LBj ring 5 so they can attempt to call him the GOAT lol
My predictions…
Mike Budenholzer to Pheonix,
Monty Williams to Milwaukee,
Nick Nurse to Philly,
Adrian Griffin to Toronto,
Charles Lee to Detroit
Doc to retire
I would think the Bucks would want more of a defensive-minded coach. Griffin or Nurse would fit that description better. I could see Monty going to Philly.
Kerr to Phily
Lue to GSW
Ha! You want Kerr gone so badly. Unless a new GM (really looking like Meyers is leaving) wants their own coach, Kerr is sticking around. Lue isn’t going anywhere.
Kerr is in SF because of family. He’s not leaving that team and is probably looking to take a similar path as his mentor Popovich – one team. I’d say he’s pretty close to being untouchable, and the options out there aren’t going to always be better, if at all.
Don’t want Nurse in Philly- he regressed every season and has a team loaded with talent, couldn’t even get to the playoffs.
JJ Redick, Monty Williams, Sam Cassell, Frank Vogel- I’m good with those 4
Once he became the all-time coaching win leader, Pop would have stepped down had Hammon still been with the team. Now he has the #1 pick to play with thanks to the rigged NBA draft
Did they rig for Orlando last season, it how about Detroit in the season prior, maybe they rigged it for the T-Wolves the one before that? Or do they only rig it when it’s convenient such as Ewing to the Knicks, Bron to the Cavs and Wemby to the Spurs? I’m sure the league really wanted one of the future faces of the NBA in a small market like San Antonio instead of the big markets like L.A. or New York.
It’s been rigged since they stop doing the draft live and just came out the room with envelopes.
If the Lakers, Knicks, Clippers, or Bulls had a pick in the lottery this year, they would be Victor’s new team. SA isn’t a small market team. They sold out for years when Robinson, Duncan, Kawhi, Manu, & Parker were there. They get that #1 pick when it’s an iconic big man, ie: Robinson Duncan….
pop gets team contender ready 2-3 yrs. retires. sets up hammons to take over and be successful.
Ever since your wife was brutally murdered by Ted bundy Milt I’ve noticed your comments become more trumpish in there tone. The moon isn’t made of cheese and the NBA draft isn’t rigged.
Warriors should try and get Ty Lue, they will proceed to make the next 7 Finals. They should have easily won the Finals this year. Ty Lue is better and coaches rings around Kerr every game.
Maybe gumdrops will fall from the sky as well. Or maybe Curry will leave his wife to be with you.
I wonder when Poppy will retire. I remember talk of the former Jazz coach wanting the Spurs head coach spot. I thought was mentioned Poppy was going to retire but now the draft was rigged in his favor for Wemb and such. Even saw Wemb only wanted to be with Poppy. Even if Detroit or Houston got first pick would he have been happy there. Sure San Antonio will be on a roll now with Wemb
I’d like to see the Suns (or any NBA team) hire the first-ever female head coach in NBA history and then win a Title. Now that would be a game changer.
Why? What does it matter? I think Becky Hammond just set the chances of a female HC back 10 years.
The delay in finalizing a deal with OLLIE is that the team is having difficulty in reaching a contract agreement with………..
