The Knicks will listen to trade offers this summer for Julius Randle and RJ Barrett, but they won’t be eager to move either player unless they get a major star in return, Stefan Bondy of The New York Daily News says in a discussion of the team’s offseason plans with Michael Scotto of HoopsHype and Ian Begley of SNY.tv.
Randle is coming off an All-NBA regular season, but he was disappointing in the playoffs for the second time in three years, although an ankle injury contributed to that. Scotto doesn’t believe other teams value him as highly as New York’s front office does, but Bondy questions whether Randle is an effective leader for the Knicks now that they’ve seemingly established themselves as a consistent playoff team. Begley notes that Randle has a personal connection with senior executive William Wesley and team president Leon Rose and states that management won’t try to deal him just because of a disappointing postseason.
Begley points out that some members of the front office were willing to send Barrett to Utah in last summer’s negotiations for Donovan Mitchell, so he’s likely to be made available again if the right deal comes along. Bondy believes any team talking about trading a star player to the Knicks would have to decide whether it would prefer Randle or Barrett in return.
There’s more on the Knicks from that conversation:
- Joel Embiid and Karl-Anthony Towns have been mentioned as potential trade targets, but the three writers are skeptical that either deal will happen this summer. Scotto notes that Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey doesn’t like to trade star players unless he’s getting another one in return and suggests that the Heat look like a better option if Philadelphia ever decides to part with Embiid. Bondy points out that the Towns rumors have been around for a long time, and while he heard two years ago that coach Tom Thibodeau wouldn’t be opposed to a reunion with the Timberwolves big man, things might have changed since then.
- Thibodeau’s affection for free agent Josh Hart and his CAA connections could help push his next contract into the range of $18MM per year, Scotto adds. He cites a consensus among attendees at last week’s draft combine that Hart plans to re-sign with New York.
- Immanuel Quickley raised his value with a season that saw him finish second in the Sixth Man of the Year balloting, and his extension could be worth $80MM to possibly $100MM over four years, according to Scotto. Bondy cautions that the Knicks will have to be careful about how much they pay Quickley with big-money deals for Jalen Brunson, Randle, Barrett and likely Hart already in place.
- The Bulls seem like a natural destination for Derrick Rose, whose $15.6MM team option for next season is unlikely to be picked up, Scotto states. Begley also mentions the Bucks, who were rumored to have interest in Rose during the season.
Actually I like the idea of trading Barrett for a top-5 young shooter.
Nah, the guy we need to deal is Randle. I love the guy but he doesn’t have the constitution to succeed under the pressure of postseason basketball in NY. Barrett does.
Wait until an A-lister in his prime (Booker, Doncic, Embiid) asks out of a deteriorating situation. A 2-time all-NBA player, several promising youngsters, and a boatload of picks is the best package any team can put together for a bonafide superstar.
What the Jazz got for Gobert is still fresh in people’s minds, so the return for an Embiid or Luka trade would have to be one for the ages
Who is this top five young shooter, and why would that team deal that player for Barrett?
I wouldn’t mind seeing Barrett moved, even if it were to be somewhere between pick four to pick 6/7. Someone like Ausur’s defence to Gradey Dick’s shooting would fit better with the current roster.
No way IQ is getting 20-25M a year lol.
I don’t think Towns will ever be a 1 on a championship team he’s soft imo.
I’d rather the Knicks go after Zion and bet he gets in shape playing in NY where he wanted to be drafted.
I wonder if NO is getting fed up with him missing games. Possibly Randle, IQ and some picks could work.
If Austin Reaves gets $$100mm contract, IQ is worth $80mm
Reeves getting 100 mil? Maybe, but probably from another team with a crazy offer sheet to force Lakers to match. Players are looking at Poole’s deal, too. Prices are far too high for role players
Randle and Barrett are each liked by the FO.
But, at this stage of the team’s development, it NEEDS to upgrade it’s 3 point shooting, and preferably do it at the top of the roster (adding a 3 and D role player for backup minutes will help only on the margin). Ideally, we’ll add a starter who can share the floor with the one legitimate floor spacer we currently have on the wing (Grimes). His minutes and shots can only come from either Randle or Barrett.
Sure Bulls FO, get Rose… Why not? I mean, do not learn from the past, just keep getting oft injured retreads and scratching those ‘lottery’ cards…
Who on Miami is a superstar? Embiid not going to Heat —- ever.
Probably not, unless they get a 3rd team involved. Morey, if he has shown nothing else, is willing to be patient waiting for the right deal (or at least the one he wants) to come along, even if the media screams he needs to move now. Other than the sixers deciding to go full rebuild mode as the way to go…then yeah I don’t think the Heat can produce the best deal apart from a Joel demand (and that might not move Morey any quicker either lol) to the Heat exclusively and I still think they would need a 3rd team to get a satisfactory deal done
Randle should be moved to Dallas. Not many teams know how to use Randle. Therefore he won’t be haPPy. And we all know how that goes for the drama queen. Dallas is home. And Luka is King there. Randle will fit there fine imo. Could be better than he was in NYC. And that’s saying a lot.
Unfortunately Thibs likes him. So I don’t see him moving. So it has to be Obi1.
Quickley should also be moved. Cause we can’t tie up that money with him. Hart is cheaper. Quickley and Obi by default have to be part of the big star search…….
Just go get DeRozan. He’s not as expensive as Beal or Towns. And gives us exactly what need. Clutch buckets and a solid scorer. He can end his career as a Knick …….
Bulls should offer either of DeRozan or Lavine for Randle, Hartenstein, and a future pick.
I’m sorry but is there a more over paid people on earth than an average to slightly below average nba player. It’s gotten absolutely ludicrous
