Before he was traded from Minnesota to the Lakers in February, D’Angelo Russell was believed to be seeking $100MM over four years on his next contract, according to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports. Russell, who will be a free agent this summer, had an up-and-down postseason and only played 15 minutes off the bench in the final game of L.A.’s season, so Fischer is skeptical there will be bidders at that price point.
Still, Fischer hears from sources that Russell was viewed as a “positive presence” in the Lakers’ locker room and speculates that the two sides may be able to get a shorter-term (and less lucrative) deal done. Los Angeles could even keep D-Lo off the free agent market altogether by signing him to an extension on or before June 30.
Because he was traded within the last six months, Russell would be ineligible to sign an extension longer than two years, and Dave McMenamin of ESPN hears that the Lakers won’t pursue a two-year deal worth the veteran guard’s maximum number (approximately $67.5MM). However, Fischer suggests that something closer to $40MM over two years might make sense for both sides.
Given Russell’s playoff struggles, it’s certainly possible the Lakers will explore alternatives at point guard this summer, but their flexibility will be limited if they intend to bring back free agents like Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura, as has been reported. Within his ESPN.com story, McMenamin explores the different paths L.A. could take at the point guard spot, noting that the team might be able to package Malik Beasley ($16.5MM) and Mohamed Bamba ($10.3MM) in a trade to bring someone in without requiring cap room.
Here’s more on the Lakers:
- There’s “widespread skepticism” that LeBron James will retire this offseason, according to Fischer, who says LeBron’s post-game comments on Monday surprised many team staffers. McMenamin, like, some other reporters earlier in the week, cites a source close to James who believes LeBron will return in 2023/24. Nonetheless, if only as a thought exercise, Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report explores what the Lakers’ next steps might look like if the future Hall-of-Famer does decide to call it a career this offseason.
- While retirement may not be in the cards for James this summer, foot surgery could be. After McMenamin reported this week that LeBron isn’t ruling out the possibility of undergoing a procedure to address a torn tendon in his right foot, Shams Charania of The Athletic says that surgery would likely sideline the 38-year-old for about two months, with an expectation that he’d be ready for training camp. James is undergoing further evaluations to determine whether it’s necessary.
- During extension negotiations with Rui Hachimura last fall, the Wizards initially offered a contract in the neighborhood of $12MM per year and eventually bumped that offer to $13-14MM, according to Fischer. Hachimura’s camp was seeking something in the four-year, $60MM range, so a deal didn’t get done. The Lakers forward appears to be in good position to match or exceed that number after a strong finish to the regular season and a productive postseason — Fischer views $15MM per year as a possible floor for Hachimura.
- The Pacers and Suns could be rival suitors to watch for Hachimura, per Fischer, who notes that both clubs pursued him on the trade market during the winter. The Pacers, who will have cap room this offseason, are better positioned to consider an offer sheet for Hachimura than the capped-out Suns would be.
Good idea
Packaging Malik Beasley ($16.5MM) and Mohamed Bamba ($10.3MM) in a trade could allow the team to bring someone in without requiring cap room.
Who would they bring in? Who is begging to move a $25 mil a year player that would help this Lakers team for Beasley, Bamba and a couple 2nd picks?
You would think no one excoet the Lakers traded a first for Beasley, Vando, Russell and off loaded Weatbrook. Anything is possible
They need to try and get terry rozier first if not then Fred vanfleet , Gary Trent or derozan lakers need actual consistent scorers and shooters I already knew dennis , d lo, and malik wasn’t gonna work they not consistent or put pressure on the defense
Malik, Bamba and 17 pick enough to get Dorian Finney Smith?
Beasley’s $16.5 million is a key number. Kyrie’s max is around $46 million. Russell should expect to resign for somewhere in the neighborhood of $30 million.
The Lakers sign and trade Russell, Beasley and their 2027 1st in exchange for Kyrie Irving whom the Mavericks resign in order to trade him to L.A.
The Mavericks get something in return for their sunk cost of acquiring Irving and the Lakers get a 3rd star that knows how to be effective playing off James.
Come on Russel is not getting close to $30 million when he can’t play defense. Why would Mavs want to help out Lakers? If you switch Reeves and Russel that would sound a lot more better for the Mavs to do it.
Is Irving wants to go to Lakers, what choice do the Mavs have? Russell gets $30 million because it makes the salaries work and it’s the going rate for overpaid guards that don’t play defense since the Poole signing.
Besides because of the Arenas rule Reaves can’t make than $11.4 million next year
You are only suggesting a advantage for Lakers. There is 0 reason to overpay D’Lo. many other teams could come up with a better trade offer for Kyrie. If its payroll Rui and Vandy would make better sense for Mavs than Russel. Since Kyrie is a free agent he can take a little pay cut to go to Lakers.
I have no allegiance to the Lakers, I’m only making a trade suggestion. I Personally think Kyrie will resign for the max with the Mavs and stay there for at least a year before whining about wanting to be traded.
I’m only putting the trade out there on the off chance that Irving wants to play for the Lakers and won’t take anything less than a max contract.
The Mavs problem is not scoring. Their problem is very poor defense. Just like how the Lakers pulled out Russel because his poor defense was exploited by Nuggets. Warriors lost because of poor defense.
Russell at $30 million? Rubles or pesos????
Pass the dutchie on the left hand side.
I can 100% assure you the Mavs are not doing a sign and trade with the Lakers or the Suns for that matter. Keep hearing this same nonsense and it is absolutely not happening. They will take the cap space before they take a bum return to help either of those teams.
Which former/current Laker guard would you rather have on your team if you could have him from age 24 until the rest of their career, Josh Hart, Alex Caruso, Eddie Jones, Austin Reaves, K. Caldwell-Pope or Michael Cooper? Rank a top3 if possible…
Eddie Jones, Josh Hart, Austin Reaves, KCP, Alex Caruso, and Michael Cooper in that order.
Joes was a 3 time All-Star and All-Defensive selection. Hart’s versatility and grit makes him something any team wants. Reaves is a versatile player who can play both guard spots and fit into almost any team scheme, and he’s not done improving. KCP is a prototypical 3&D weapon, but his ceiling is a bit lower than Hart or Reaves, though he’s a proven playoff performer. Caruso is a borderline elite defender, but he can’t stay healthy. Cooper just… wasn’t on that kind of level. Good, but not someone I’d take over any of the others. Yeah, he won DPOY, but I firmly see him as overrated. Maybe he could move up over Caruso.
The biggest issue with Cooper is that he is basically Mattise Thybulle. Better at passing and worse at rebounding, but otherwise very similar.
I feel like Coop is more underrated than anything tbh. Coop has 4 or 5 rings & was an essential member of each 1 of those championship teams. He’s 1 of the greatest wing defenders ever & has a strong argument as the best ever. Coop was also 1 of the 1st great 3pt shooters & woulda been even more in demand if he played in this era
He was avg 3PT shooter (34%). Better and good in playoffs (39%).
Miller was 39% in season and 39% in playoffs.
Klay is (41%)
Curry is (43%). These two are great.
I’m with ya here Sankra, Cooper has alwars been overlooked even inside the Laker fan base – A player player the more you watched the more you liked
Also ageee his demand would be pretty interesting in todays game , can def say it outreach Thybull by quite a stretch – rough estimate 28-30 Aav in his prime on the open market today
Right. These guys above don’t know. If it wasn’t there time then they assume
Jones, cooper and then kcp
Razor thin margins here
Imma disagree on the prev posters Cooper analysis tho, wondering respectfully how much he even saw of him , ( guess ; little ) …. Thybull ?????
I’ve seen him plenty, and yeah, he was a fantastic defender. God tier. But that’s it. He was a one-dimensional offensive player. He could shoot, but he was streaky, and he had weak ability as a cutter. And his shooting only started to develop in the second half of his career. Even his playmaking wasn’t as good as it looked on paper. I would put him ahead of Caruso, now that I’ve given it more thought, but the league nowadays is an offensive league, and Cooper doesn’t have the bag of the others.
Respectfully, seems more like you don’t know Thybulle at all, because he is almost as good at defense as Cooper. I could see Thybulle having a very similar career to Cooper if he can continue the strides he made this year in Portland.
No. Sorry if Thybulle is a friend or relative, but he lacks the skill to ever touch Cooper.
Bigger picture, don’t get lost in stats that may not translate across eras. Cooper was a true 6M (starter level minutes) for a truly great team, and was almost always in the game in crunch time. Thybulle struggles for minutes in POR. On skills, Cooper was always a very good distance shooter, and an excellent facilitator. Thybulle can’t shoot or facilitate. You can’t look at 3 pt percentages as you do today (the 3 pt shot didn’t equate to distance shooting at that time, because they weren’t part of a regular offense). Cooper was considered the LAL best distance shooter and 3 point shooter. Will Thybulle ever be that on even a bad team? Cooper was also the LAL’s de facto backup PG. Will Thybulle ever be that for a team? When those last two questions can be answered in the affirmative, it might be a discussion. Not until.
Cooper. Jones, Reaves
I think your a tad off Eon , Cooper was closer to a Rodman tier than a thybull as far as impact to the game ( even if it was only on 1 side of the court ) –
I think him and Eddie have to be 1/2 here
Lakers needed someone like Dlo, but not Dlo… Somone who can play a little more defence on the regular with a consistent shot… Doesn’t have to be lights out, just hit them on a consistent basis…
It’s all about whether Bamba and Beasley have (positive) trade value (or negative trade value) under their current contracts. Neither makes that much, but neither has done much either. Still, its only a 1 year contract (upon the option being exercised).
Draft day deals can only be done for players under contract (which would include Bamba and Beasley if the player options are exercised). But no S&T transactions on draft day. So, no FAs (like DLO or KI) can be involved draft day deals.
The surgery could be why LeBron made those retirement comments. Some people absolutely despise going under the knife for anything. And I don’t think LeBron ever has before.
If its the tendon in the arch of the foot, thats a crappy rehab, and recovery.
LBJ would have to spend a lot of time off his feet. No summer, and likely will sit out next season rehabbing.
Shaq retired because of a big toe.
Big guys, and feet injuries have a lousy NBA history, and track record.
As opposed to the people that enjoy surgery?
Lakers only signing Russell to trade him. He’s useless for a run at a chip. Kyrie is coming to LA …. He’s the only that can help get them there. The Real Ky.
Still not winning ……. cause the Bron window is CLosed. . Cerrado. ….
I bet you neither of those things are happening. Wanna make a bet?
I don’t bet or care what Kyrie does or Lakers do. Unless it’s with team I support.
Lakers don’t have moves to make to upgrade significantly. Ky is a FA who was begging like a puppy at Lakers gms. I’d say there is a strong possibility Kyrie is a Laker. Bron knows who can Really help him.

But Kyrie don’t want to play with Lebron. No team will trade for DLO. Austin Reeves and Hachimura will be much better.
Never underestimate the power of a stupid decision maker…
Mark from Cuba coukd decide Dlo is worth a flier if Kyrie says no to the deal they offer…
