One reason why the Grizzlies informed Dillon Brooks they won’t re-sign him this summer was a disconnect between the two sides over his role on offense, writes Damichael Cole of The Memphis Commercial Appeal.
Brooks’ usage rate increased each year during his first five NBA seasons, all the way up to 28.8% in 2021/22, but dipped back down to 21.8% in ’22/23, his lowest mark in four years. The comments the veteran forward made in his end-of-season media session over the weekend indicated that he wasn’t thrilled by that role reduction.
“I don’t think I lost any thing on the offensive end,” Brooks said. “I was just there to three-and-D, shoot and play defense. I got way more to my game than that.”
Of course, Brooks’ personality – both on and off the court – was also a major factor the Grizzlies considered when they made their decision not to re-sign him. As Cole writes, Ja Morant, head coach Taylor Jenkins, and general manager Zach Kleiman all expressed a desire to tone down on the trash talking going forward, while Brooks said he had no regrets about his own comments, telling reporters, “That’s who I am.”
Here’s more on Brooks:
- Despite an unceremonious end to his time in Memphis, there’s expected to be a market for Brooks in free agency this summer, according to reports from Shams Charania of The Athletic and Sean Deveney of Heavy.com. One general manager who spoke to Deveney suggested that Brooks’ price before his stock crashed might have been something like $54MM over three years — now, he could be a mid-level target for over-the-cap clubs. “There will be tax teams hoping to get him in on a one-plus-one deal—come to us, we have a good culture, help us win, clean up your reputation, and then go back on the market next year,” the GM said. “He’ll be in demand.”
- During an appearance on ESPN’s Around the Horn, Ramona Shelburne suggested that Brooks’ asking price on his next contract is – or at least was – $25MM per year (Twitter video link). Given the context, it’s unclear whether that’s solid info or merely speculation on Shelburne’s part — either way, it’s almost certainly an unrealistic goal.
- The breakup with Brooks is just the start of what will be a difficult offseason for Kleiman, writes Mark Giannotto of The Memphis Commercial Appeal. Within that story, Giannotto asserts that the Grizzlies weren’t the source of Tuesday’s leak to Charania, since it wouldn’t have made sense for them to say they wouldn’t re-sign him “under any circumstances.”
- Michael Grange of Sportsnet.ca takes a look at what went wrong for Brooks in Memphis and considers what the marketplace for him will look like this summer.
“I got way more to my game than that.”
First of all, not only is that not true, but he was already third in FGA per game on the team. Seriously? The Grizzlies gave this guy way more leeway on both ends and in the locker room than they ever should have.
More like he is a bad influence on the younger players on the team. Morant is the face of the team. So they will protect him and Jackson. Brooks will be gone for more offensive player for that same amount of money.
Exactly
I think the brooks scapegoating is kinda bizarre. He’s just another player who wants to play. That’s literally everyone. And we need more trash talkers in this league. It’s more interesting.
Not saying he’s a good fit in Memphis. They should cut him. But people get cut all the time idk why Brooks is being painted as this huge disaster or whatever.
As the article notes, it’s unlikely the team leaked this information. In fact, Brooks himself (or his agent) is the reason this story is such a big deal rn
I do think though the Grizzlies may very well be the source of the leak. After all the controversy with Morant and then Brooks, it could be kind of a “we don’t want this” statement. For me it makes much less sense that the source is Brooks, as this will surely lower his stock.
First, he was making $11 million. Most guys who have his talent level don’t even sniff that. Second, he put most of the hate on himself by being a jerk.
Is that Dillon brooks fault that the team was dumb enough to pay him that?
Would you refuse that money if a team was dumb enough to pay you that?
More importantly, then enabled him by allowing his worst habits to grow. Instead of reigning in his shot selection and drawing the line on his offensive role, they coddled him and it blew up in their faces. Entirely predictable.
Because he talks s**t like Draymond but plays like Dillon Brooks. That’s why. Dude has zero self awareness. “They used me as 3 and D”. Did they? You got no 3 and very little D. He’s garbage and everybody knows it but him
Because his attitude problems caused a culture issue that led to the star of the team being suspended and the 2nd seed losing to the 7th seed…
Brooks is a culture cancer…
Memphis made the only wise move they could here…
Latest on Dillon Brooks – he is overrated. End story.
Overrated by whom? Himself? I think most people recognize Brooks for who he is at this point
Producers just added his name to the Fumbled the Bag 30 for 30. Boogie, IT4, Dipo, Schroder, Brooks, Shabazz, Nerlens, Motiejunas, Miles Bridges.
IT didn’t fumble the bag, just was extremely unfortunate with injury timing. Nerlens is the all time case or a close second to Latrell “I can’t feed my family” Spreewell.
IT absolutely fumbled the bag with his handling of extension talks prior to the injury.
True but he had no idea he was gonna have a career altering injury.
Neither did Boogie or Dipo
He’d be perfect for the warriors, especially if green leaves. Kerr and Co. might be able to convince to tone it down.
Id gladly take Dillon in Atl instead of Bogdan & I love Bogdan. Even after acquiring Saddiq (& DJ last summer) we’re frankly still 1 of the softer teams as far as playoff caliber teams. Dre is my favorite player on the team & AJ Griffin is nearly untradable in my eyes rn. But switching Dillon for either of those guys makes us much tougher on the wing, much better defensively as a team & may give us a better chance to win a title in the next 5yrs. The dream would be to somehow swap John Collins for someone like Dillon. I have a strong amount of confidence that Landry can make it happen. The trade for Saddiq & picking AJ in the draft have his track record looking pretty great so far.
Yearly reminder that the Hawks (along with almost every other team) passed on Dillon in the draft to draft his college teammate Tyler Dorsey instead. Smh. It was extremely clear throughout that season that Dillon was the best player on that team, even with all the future pros he was playing with… Drafting Dillon was literally 1 of the best moves any Memphis front office ever made tbh. Value/production wise he gotta be 1 of their top10 draft picks ever.. link to m.youtube.com
Bogdan can play…
Brooks has no game… He makes Draymond look like an offensive superstar…
I can’t believe we’re getting specific Dillon Brooks updates lol. Self-fulfilling prophecy. Good for him. Get it, Dill Pickle!
Dude, we all are on official Brooks Watch for 6 months now. Weekly articles guaranteed.
His agent wants that next paycheck… So there’s gong to be a lot of aritcles until the big announcement…
It’s going to be in Yuan…
As much as we dislike the guy on here, reality is that he’s going to be very useful to another team. Griz did the right thing by not wasting anyone’s time.
To a team in China maybe…
There’s far too many talented players sitting on the sidelines for a team to waste their time with a mediocre defence only player…
Mediocre defence doesn’t win anything…
He’ll get to take all the shots he wants next year on the Guangdong Tigers.
Honestly what team would he fit on with their current roster?
Young teams? Nope
Championship teams? Nope
Rebuilding teams? Nope
Can’t think of a single team that is a loud mouth mediocre player away from greatness.
Lol Brooks’ agent must of paid Shams well for that report…
No one will want Brooks… He was a trash talker that had no game… Even Draymond in his Ben Simmons mode has more actual game…
Brooks is just a wannabe star that should be playing in China…
The Hornets are gonna sign him right after they bring back Bridges. Then trade for Gobert and Simmons.
Don’t forget Kyrie…
Might as well do everything to tank properly…
25 mill a yr ???? Has to be BS …. otherwise he and his agent are delusional. Even on his best behavior. Not worth more than Payton Jr (8.3 mill). I believe in second chances. But I wouldn’t want him on my team. Certainly not on a young team with a good future.
There are quite a few teams that could need Brooks’ spirit and determination.
Yes, he sometimes does or says things on the court that upset the proponents of clean Disney family entertainment, but he’s a dog that still fights for his team when others have already quit.
Yes, and he’s also a chucker with bads % who, despite that, still wants a bigger offensive role. And that’s 99% of the problem. It’s his ego.
If he was just a trash-talker there would be fewer issues. But with an ego like that, he becomes a difficult fit on a lot of playoff teams.
If I’m a GM, despite the good he brings to the table, why would I want to sign a guy who is destined to cause headaches due to a mismatch in expected role? Unless I would feel there is hope of that not being an issue, he’s an easy guy to stay away from. Because right now you’re only going to get a guy who hurts as much as he helps, particularly during the playoffs.
