The Warriors intend to discuss a multiyear contract with Draymond Green this offseason, according to Anthony Slater and Shams Charania of The Athletic. Green holds a $27.6MM player option for 2023/24, so if he were to agree to a longer-term deal with Golden State, he could either opt in and complete an extension or opt out and sign a brand new contract.
Green told Marc J. Spears of Andscape (Twitter link) after a season-ending Game 6 loss to the Lakers on Friday that he has yet to make a decision on his player option and will take some time to weigh his options with agent Rich Paul.
Green wasn’t on the floor for the final 10 minutes of the Warriors’ season on Friday night, having exited the game early in the fourth quarter due to foul trouble and then being ruled out because of right calf tightness (Twitter link). But he doesn’t want that to be how his tenure in Golden State ends, telling reporters after the game that he hopes to remain with the Warriors for years to come.
“I want to be a Warrior for the rest of my life,” Green said, per The Athletic. “I want to ride out with the same dudes I rode in with.”
Head coach Steve Kerr stated after Friday’s loss that this year’s version of the Warriors was “not a championship team,” as Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo Sports tweets. However, Slater and Charania say there’s still an internal belief within the organization that a roster built around Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Green can compete for titles, so there will be a desire to keep that core together going forward, despite the fact that they’re 35, 33, and 33 years old, respectively.
The new restrictions for taxpaying teams that will be phased in over the next couple seasons as part of the NBA’s new Collective Bargaining Agreement will make it more difficult for the Warriors to carry a substantial payroll indefinitely. That will be a factor the club will have to take into account when negotiating with Green and when exploring a new deal for Thompson, who is extension-eligible this offseason.
According to The Athletic’s reporters, if Thompson is going to sign an extension with the Warriors this offseason, the expectation is that he’ll have to take a pay cut in order to secure a longer-term deal and more overall guaranteed money. He’s set to earn $43.2MM in 2023/24 in the final season of his current contract.
Slater and Charania suggest that Andrew Wiggins‘ extension could serve as a point of comparison for Thompson’s next deal — Wiggins earned $33.6MM in 2022/23 and agreed to a four-year extension that will be worth $109MM ($27.25MM per year). A new contract for Thompson could be worth more than that, but would presumably require a similar reduction in annual salary. The same thinking could apply for Green’s next contract as well.
Is Draymond really worth that? I’d let him exercise his option and after that he’s probably a $10 to $12M player
Not at all, but you can’t give that stupid money to Poole and then not give it to Draymond.
That’s bad organizational process and an iteration of the sunk cost fallacy. Because a massive contract turned out bad, they should sign a better player to a massive contract they may turn out worse due to decline?
I have no idea why they’re pursuing a deal with Draymond. Let him walk. He’s not going to be worth it unless he takes a major discount.
Hahahah “let him walk” = “break up GSW so they stop winning and beating my fave team” you cowards are so transparent
Well they were all together this year and how’d it work out? I’ll wait…
Kerr refusing to play them over 35 minutes and instead giving those minutes to Ty Jerome is exactly how they lost.
They will win next year pretty easily if Kerr is gone.
It was their second unit that had problems, not their first. There. You don’t have to wait anymore.
“break up GSW so they stop winning”
GSW went as far as the Knicks did this year and they’re not getting any younger. Looks like they’re doing a good enough job of breaking themselves up. Signing Green long-term would be a huge mistake.
Draymond opt out
Market value 4 years $70mm
Draymond opt in
3 years $45mm
Draymond demand max contract $250mm?
Dillon Brooks demand 4 years $100mm?
Draft picks get paid 10 mil to 12 top 3… to start!!! Over 95 players get at least 10 mil get real dray is worth 20 mil easy
Sorry 133 player get at least 10 million…. So stupid to say draymond is only worth what mo bamba!!!!
Mo Bamba has a future…
Draymond only has value as a former champion for a single team…
There’s no market to drive up the number, the only thing keeping his number high is that if the Warriors bring him back they dont want him punching people because he feels he got underpaid…
Dynasty…..over…..but please go ahead and resign him.
same thing was said 2 years ago.
Who said they were done two years ago? Don’t recall hearing or seeing that once.
Gaslighting much, @myaccount2 (what happened to @myaccount1?) All media and in these comments relentlessly have called the end of the GSW dynasty literally every single season, especially after 2020. Stop lying. You lied in this post. All GSW fans know you are lying. Why are you lying? We just lost. Stop kicking us when we are down just because we won 4 titles fair and square due to Curry brilliance and nothing else.
afsooner….who knows, but at least they HAD a dynasty
Trade poole and Kuminga and every pick for Towns and Minott. Resign Green, Moody and Lamb.
That trade (bad as it is) is not even possible because the Warriors are unable to trade any future 1st round picks until a 2024 top-4 protected 1st round pick they owe Memphis is conveyed.
Makes no sense for the Timberwolves unless it involves other teams’ 1st rounders and includes picks through 2029.
Yes every pick possible to Minnesota
Get a clue and stop so obviously trying to make GSW worse.
How does this make them worse. Add more firepower. How does this make them worse. Get a clue dude
You think lebron and his son are going to GS and plenty more crazy stuff. So I know you know nothing about basketball
The only shot Draymond has at another title is if he takes a paycut to stay with the Warriors…
They need to upgrade their roster and a bug deal for Green would just hamper their ability to make moves…
Even him taking the option puts the squeeze on the team…
A contract similar to Wiggins for Green and Thompson. Thompson needs to take a big pay cut. he is nowhere close to be that max player. He looked very tired during the playoffs.
Even that might be a bit too much for Green, Thompson can still be very effective un most match ups… He just needs to have a healtheir season for conditioning…
It’s looking like one or the other has to take a pay cut…
@ARC But Klay was talking about wanting a max extension about a month ago. Will he go from that to taking a big pay cut? I kind of doubt it because he seems to be in a place mentally these days where he is totally into himself and fighting the inevitable.
Klay came out and said he never asked for a max contract. Nobody is giving Klay a max contract so that is out of the question. His defense is not top anymore.
Yup, another big lie that posters repeated until they thought was true. Klay, Steph and Dray are all taking paycuts to get a deeper roster next year – bet on that.
He certainly played like he’s aiming for one, what with the bad shot selection and hero ball most of the season without the performances to back it up. One has to wonder if his contract demands will be reasonable or based on Klay still seeing himself as the player he once was.
He definitely won’t get a max regardless, but negotiations could become difficult.
U can use one period to end a sentence no need to triple down
Sure………
But there are many ways to end a sentence
Ya dig???????
I dont know man, I got literally grammar policed on here, which is weird because literally everyone is anonymous on here WHO CARES?!????
*”literally got grammar policed,” not “got literally grammar policed.” There. I did it again.
Only the grammar police do…
You might care if you let them get to ya… But I find it funnier to see them flop around like a fish out of water when they can’t handle a bit of change…
As well as trade donte di if he resigns for a little salary relief along with 9 million coming down from Wiggins contract.
Not happening either
The Warriors can easily improve without a big roster reshuffle. Moody and Kuminga have to grow and become more consistent. GPII should help out their 2nd unit, their biggest weakness. Hopefully they can make a change of scenery trade for Poole. I still don’t understand why people thought he was that good. 2-buzzer beaters doesn’t make up for a mediocre shooting history. He was never going to the next Steph Curry, as the 88titles guy kept proclaiming. A good vet signing is in order.
@giants. Warriors made a massive mistake in giving Poole 28m a year. And unless if they can move him or Klay (or Geeen opts out and leaves) they are massively screwed.
It was a smart move because contract money has to match. Which means now they can trade him for a player with similar value/contract. He will get traded this off season, reason they gave him that deal. Poole is not going to replace Steph or Klay. They will have another run at a title.
Name one player with a contract like that who any team would want to swap for Poole.
No they aren’t – youre lying. There’s dozens of articles out today reporting 30/11/23 are taking pay cuts to get a deeper roster.
They are pretty cornered unless they can move Poole… And even if they do they’ll probably be on the hook for overpays for Klay and Dray…
Moody and Kuminga will be superstars in this league if Kerr is not their coach, period.
Could also be said that they’d both be starters without Curry, Thompson and Wiggins on the team…
Put them on the Hornets and there’s no reason to not start them…
Sadly warriors don’t have many options. I would offer him a 1 year max. If he says no, give him a 2nd. But I would stop there any more it will hurt them long term. Short term, that do t have cap space anyways so mond as well just pay him
I still maintain that Green has to go. He can say he wants to stay with the team all he wants and that’s what most guys Proclaim at the end of the year. But he has worn out his welcome. Sure he’s good on defense and sure he picked up his offense when the team needed it but all the other crap is still fresh in the headlines for me. Unless it’s a bargain he has to go. Opt out and good luck.
Draymond was awesome this year.
Kerr was the entire reason why the record was bad. He played 2 way scrubs over Kuminga and Moody for absolutely no reason (they lost almost every time he did this). Kerr is incompetent, Kerr cant win unless this team shoots well, Kerr got cooked by like 75% of NBA coaches all year. Kerr has to go.
Funny how it’s Kerr’s fault for who he asks to play but not the players’ fault for actually playing poorly. Not sure how that one works.
Its pretty easy if you know about how basketball works, which you don’t
@Mods – please IP ban this troll.
Great explanation! Care to go into more detail? That’d be awesome, if you’re able, thanks.
I think the NBA (and NFL for that matter) miss the mark in the salary cap. There really should be a vessel for going over the cap for players you draft and retain rather than penalizing teams. All of those players with the exception of Wiggins were drafted by the warriors and they can’t afford to keep them all signed. It’s similar to what happened back in the day with OKC. Could you imagine what that team could have looked like if they were able to keep Durant, Westbrook, Harden, Green, Ibaka, etc?
They could have kept them. They didn’t want to pay the money like Golden State. Owners being cheap
It’s ridiculous to penalize a team for drafting well.
It’s also ridiculous for leagues like MLB, NFL and NBA allow the team owners to say stuff like “we are handicapped by budget” oh so you’re a brokie then? So you are handicapping the ENTIRE LEAGUE with your own wallet? Sell your team to a richer person then who doesnt care about paying players what they are worth, whatever it takes to win. The leagues have to punish owners who don’t spend, not reward them for any reason.
I completely agree bigeasye – that’s the whole point as you should be rewarded for drafting and developing players. At the very least, the team shouldn’t be punished with excessive taxes. And most important of all, the fans get to see the homegrown talent for years – hopefully – instead of a constantly rotating roster.
Just because it’s not fair doesn’t mean they missed their intended mark.
If the Warriors sign Draymond to a big money extension they are locking themselves into riding with the big 3 until the wheels completely fall off and giving up on being able to extend their run with a new core. Unfortunately, after the Wiseman fail and the Poole regression into overpaid turnover machine that may be their only choice.
Both Wiseman and Poole are because 100% of Kerr. Focus on Kerr being the only big problem in GSW, no one else.
Wiseman sucked. He was lost on defense and he could not learn to play with Steph. If you can not play with Steph you can not play significant minutes with this current Warriors team. As for Poole, Kerr did not tell him to turn into a fulltime hero baller; Kerr did not force him to give zero defensive effort; Kerr did not challenge his manhood and punch him in the face.
Wiseman didn’t fit the timeline and had to much potential at a position where they didn’t need that. I do think they need a all star center around Wiggins age or older. So trade poole and Kuminga ( who Kerr doesn’t like) for a starting center and have Looney backing up Green and whoever at center.
I don’t like Kerr but he isn’t the problem. Just needs a couple roster changes to keep the dynasty alive
DINGGGG DONGGGG THE WITCH IS DEAD
GOLDEN STATE ARE STILL YOUR DEFENDING CHAMPIONS UNTIL THE NBA FINALS – HAHAHA
Saddest comment award lmao
Nah thats all yours on here. At least I support a team, all you do is bring hate and lies on here.
Paying Draymond anything close to what he currently makes is comical. He’s a mediocre agitator at best now.
You dont want him play though, you only read headlines about him. Draymond was awesome this year, his best in ages.
Except when his team needed him and he was stuck on the bench because of undisciplined foul trouble. Or is Kerr paying the refs to call fouls on his own team because he wants to lose so badly lol
Even though you are never ever going to give a charitable take and instead lie your butt off on here, you are almost there – the Lakers and Lebron clearly paid the refs to call more fouls on GSW this series, the Lakers gameplan after losing game 2 was literally saying out loud “we have to get to the foul line more” and the internet went “wait what? why not try just playing basketball?” and then the Lakers went “Oh yeah, right…(slips envelope under refs door)”.
But you hate GSW so youre happy today right! And yet youre right back here! I’d be outside smiling and being happy. Instead you come in here to gloat and brag. IP ban this clown @mods
This gotta be Marty ???????
RIGHT .
I think the most telling thing is that all of your excuses are overly ambiguous. Lakers paid the refs: no way for anyone to actually see this happen so by default you’re “right”. Kerr is a bad coach, not bad players: you keep saying this but don’t point to actual plays or situations. Warriors are all taking a paycut: yet you don’t link to the millions of articles you claim this is quoted in.
After a certain point you need to realize you are the troll. You raise baseless claims then whine when anyone disagrees with you. I almost feel sorry for you.
He was invisible for 5/6 games in the Lakers series lmao
Paying Draymond his option is an overpay…
He’ll need to take a massive pay cut to help the team…
Because he doesn’t help them on the floor as often as he used to…
Career – 8.7 pts, 7 reb, 5.6 ast
Great defender and team player. Like a coach on the floor. The only yrs he was worth that money is 2014-15 thru 2017-18.
Now is just a complementary player. And as
@afsooner02 said ….. go ahead and pay him please.
I love how you have the audacity to say stuff like “The only yrs he was worth that money is 2014-15 thru 2017-18.” how do you even determine this? You do realize when you say stuff like that, literally no one knows what you are basing it on? You are out here making up stuff NO ONE AGREES with you on, and on top of that you don’t think Draymond was “worth the money” in a year he won a ring. You dont know ball then, great, get off here.
If any player wins a title or makes the Finals, they are “worth” their money, no matter what it was, period.
Dray also has multiple 30+ point games in the NBA Finals, but you list his career PPG, just being the worst analyst imaginable. Knicks fans in 2023 have zero clue what a title winning unit even looks like. F
Audacity …. look that word up.
Says look up most knowledgeable fan ever.
You need to be explained about his best yrs. You don’t understand small bigs in decline. Being a Homer. Doesn’t have to make you brain dead lol. Yes I believe you probably don’t understand me. Sounds like a personal problem. Only folks who understand ball get me. Feel free to not read me. Now get your medicine Marty …..
Dre is done ….. fried like your brain lol.
Now this here is a top 10 clown ….. Curry with 8 rings. And he’s got audacity claims about legit concerns.
This is for the Clown …. who will leave like the Warriors did. Getting their ares handed to them ……….. again. Change your name Marty

At 33 yrs old. You don’t pay a small big in decline. You move on and try and get value for him. It’s called a smart move. Something you can’t understand, I know. Considering you will have to pay Klay too. I’m not a hater like you ares. I’m actually giving good advice. I post truths the way I see it. Cause I respect the game. Not wackoff on one team or player, wannabee …. now go wannabee somewhere else.
I’ve always said the Warriors are the smartest team in the NBA. If they are serious about this, that will change. DG should be a top priority – to be rid of.
