Before he eliminated the Kings with a record-setting Game 7 performance, Stephen Curry delivered a memorable pre-game speech to his teammates, according to Marcus Thompson II and Shams Charania of The Athletic. Curry typically doesn’t talk a lot before games, but he was disappointed that the Warriors missed out on a chance to clinch the series at home and he was upset that Sacramento guard Malik Monk had called the team old. So Curry had the players’ full attention when he rose to speak.
“He is that guy,” Gary Payton II said. “So when he speaks, everybody better listen. Because 30 is usually quiet and lets his game speak for itself. But he had to say what he had to say, because he knew what type of vibe it was … and I don’t think he wanted to give this one up. So he led and we followed.”
According to Thompson and Charania, Curry expressed his belief in his teammates and assured them that they were ready to win in a tough environment. He also implored them to put personal feelings aside, which sources told the authors was a message for Jordan Poole, Jonathan Kuminga and others who have been unhappy with their roles and playing time during the series.
Curry backed up his words with a 50-point performance, the most anyone has ever scored in a seventh game.
“He’s got the same edge as any of the other greats,” Poole said. “That’s what makes him so special. Maybe his approach is a bit different than the other guys, but we know he’s a killer. Everybody in the world knows he’s a killer.”
There’s more on the Warriors:
- Rumors have persisted that luxury tax concerns will break up Golden State’s roster this summer, but Draymond Green told reporters, including Ramona Shelburne of ESPN, that shouldn’t be the focus right now. “Stop trying to turn the page on us so fast,” he said. “Stop trying to turn the page on (LeBron James). We get so caught up in what’s the next thing, we don’t appreciate the current. Then you get to the next thing and you’re looking back, like, ‘Man, I wish we still had that. I wish we could still see this.’ So for me and our guys, we are going to appreciate this every step of the way.”
- Kevon Looney gets overlooked because his game isn’t flashy, but he played an important role in the first-round victory, per Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area. Looney collected 21 rebounds Sunday, including 10 in the third quarter as the Warriors pulled away with the game.
- Klay Thompson is looking forward to his first-ever playoff matchup against the Lakers (video link from HoopsHype). Thompson was born in Los Angeles, and his father spent much of his NBA career as part of some legendary Lakers teams.
Green has to be Laker bound this summer.., he has LeBron on the brain way too often. Sign and trade possibility?
I think this is the last time we see Draymond in a GSW uniform and I do think he’s indirectly lobbying to play with Lebron, but I see him ending up in Detroit moreso than I see LA. But, I can absolutely see Klay Thompson in a Laker uniform receiving passes from (imo) the best passer ever.
Under no circumstances (win or lose) do I see this Warrior team back intact next season.
problem for the Lakers is they can’t give Green the money he wants. Would he be willing to take a huge pay cut just to play with the Lakers? I don’t see that happening. Pistons, trailblazers, or Mavs will go after Green.
I see more like the Warriors have plenty to offer and can easily acquire Bron and Bronny. If GSW wins a chip this year, Steph will have more rings than Bron, and Bron can then join GSW and continue to win while never catching Steph, thus cementing Steph as the true #1 once he gets 7 rings.
LOL #1 never been in the conversation
Tell me you dont know ball without telling me you dont know ball.
If Curry, who has been #1 since 2015 and never once not been #1 outside of his injured 2020, wins 7 rings he’s clearly #1 ahead of MJ, and that’s a FACT you will have to learn to live with. Sorry if you hate him, but after yesterday, you become instantly irrelevant if you don’t think he’s a GOAT.
It seems Kyrie is going to be the primary target for the Lakers this offseason. If they make that happen I don’t think they can pay Draymond what he is going to want.
I think that’s what everybody thought also but an article just came out that the Lakers aren’t interested in Kyrie irving. Who knows if it’s true or not.
So maybe Green comes over in a little sign and trade and he gets his 3 years maybe 60 million. Maybe a guy on the Lakers making 20 currently comes over? Maybe a three-team thing? Love to get the latest shiny rage Austin Reeves but he’s probably staying in LA
kyrie is not taking a pay cut unless they can convince Russel to go to Mavs and Kyrie to lakers in a sign and trade.
We’ll see. I wouldn’t predict what Kyrie might be willing to do to be where he wants to be. Especially since he’s not a good fit with Luka and everybody knows it including him.
Kyrie was at Game 7 last night … interesting :D
Only way the money would work is if
A- Jeanie went DEEEP into tax and kept Beasley/Bamba (perfect 26.5 mill match)+ pick #17 next draft but then
B- why would GSW want just those 2 and a blah pick ?
* Id love Dray personally but don’t se the numbers working out .
**Odd trade /probably never happens but what about Dray Kuminga Moody some draft capital for Ayton … I dont think Monty likes Ayton and if Dray/Paul didnt work next year they could get off both for some cap space year prior to help Kd/Book
Dont think they love his price tag over there in Phx , think they know they need to get deeper and they hardly utilize him fully IMO for how much hes getting paid . Its very unconvential admittedly but Phx doesnt have many plays let on the chessboard
*** How fun would a Dray- Paul- Book- Kd team be!!
Draymonds ego is doing 2 things here…
1. Overinflating his value…
2. Wanting to create a market to up his value…
He knows you have to play the marketing game to get your number raised in the NBA…
He just falsely assumes that there is any market for an ageing one way player who punches their team mates…
Poole and Kuminga aren’t good enough to get mad about their roll. They had all season to earn a larger roll, and they failed. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a player regress as much as Poole has. I hope he is traded after the season.
Poole’s defense is what’s keeping him on the bench. in playoff defense is important. Just watch the Lakers bench Russel in the series because like Poole he is a defensive liability on the court.
Poole’s defense is the main reason he is on the bench and his poor shooting so far (33/25/76 in the Kings series) will keep him there if he doesn’t get it together.
No, that’s not the right take. The correct take is Kerr thinking Donte DiVicenczo is a big game player when he shouldnt be seeing any time in meaningful playoff games like this. Kuminga deserved that time over Donte, straight up. Kuminga plays PG but Kerr is an idiot who wants to win games with 4 small guard lineups.
Kuminga is not a PG.
If Bron can play PG, Kuminga can bring the ball up the floor too.
Neither are Poole or Divenzco but it doesnt stop Kerr from playing them there.
True
Sacro guys say Warriors are old
Sillivan I don’t even know you anymore. What do you mean by this? Okay they’re old but they’re moving on and they won the series. What’s your point? Next year is next year but right now they’re moving on to the next round.
Is this a post that found its way here accidentally after game 6 or after game two?
I suspect Sillivan is a poorly programmed bot posting only non sequitur, parroted content from the article, random stats, broken comps.
@xtraflamy thats long been my suspicion too. There’s no logic at all in any of these comments.
According to the NBA, the Warriors are younger than the Lakers. The oldest team is the Bucks.
Anyone who picked Sacto over GSW needs to be banned from saying things online. Never a doubt. My original prediction of GSW not losing more than 3 games all playoffs is still alive but barely. Regardless, that series was only close because Kerr refused to play Looney/Dray/Wiggins/Klay/Steph even though they went like +91 in their 36 combined minutes all series before game 7 (I cant find the exact + but it was something huge). Just playing with their food. Kerr is an absolute moron and the worst coach in the NBA. He has the best 5 that can beat anyone and he refuses to use it. Anyone can win with this team, just play the best 5 who cook everyone together as long as possible.
From Sac’s end, D’Aaron Fox is just the same player as Jordan Poole and Sabonis is not a winner. They aren’t even a lock for the playoffs next year. These losers literally thought Kevin Huerter can take down Hall of Famers in the middle of their primes. Clown franchise.
“Kerr is an absolute moron and the worst coach in the NBA.”
Just gonna leave that there; carry on.
We just watched Kerr turn an easy 4 or 5 gamer into a 7 game sweatbox because he doesn’t know how to use rotations that are winning. He wants to use 3 guard lineups that simply do not work against good teams. If you actually watched basketball instead of being twitter fingers you’d have seen this all season.
