While the future of president of basketball operations Bob Myers remains uncertain, the trio of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green are still likely to be on the Warriors‘ roster in 2023/24, sources tell Marc Stein at Substack.
That aligns with reporting from Tim Kawakami of The Athletic, who hears that the franchise is “in no rush” to break up the core that has won four championships together.
After Green famously punched Jordan Poole during training camp, it seemed unlikely the former Defensive Player of the Year, who holds a $27.6MM player option for next season, would remain in the team’s long-term plans.
However, he won back the team’s respect over the course of the season, according to Kawakami, who says that Curry has long considered Green his “first pick” as a teammate. Kawakami also notes that Green’s value on the open market may be limited and he’s “more valuable to the Warriors and with the Warriors than anywhere else.”
Thompson, meanwhile, will be entering the final year of his contract and eligible for a veteran extension, but there’s no indication the team has any plans to trade him at this point — quite the opposite.
Here’s more on the Warriors:
- Green has said he’s undecided on whether nor not he’ll pick up his player option, but either way, he wants to “be a Warrior for life.” A report from The Athletic indicated that the team intends to discuss a multiyear contract with the big man, though it didn’t specify if that would be a new deal or an extension if he exercises his option. It sounds like it might be the former — sources tell Logan Murdock of The Ringer that the Warriors would be open to a multiyear contract if Green declines his option.
- Murdock’s story is full of interesting details on Golden State’s season. He writes that not only did Green punching Poole negatively impact their own relationship — Poole viewed Green as a mentor during his first three seasons — but it also deepened the divide between the old guard and the team’s young players. “I don’t have no answer for you,” Poole said of his relationship with Green. “Other than that, we was just on the court and teammates, and we was out there trying to win games. What I do recall saying at the beginning of the season is that, ‘We’re coming. We’re going to come out here. We’re going to play on the court. We’re going to try to win a championship.’ We were teammates. It’s just business, honestly. And that’s really all it was, it is, it has been. It’s just been business. It’s been basketball.”
- The free agency departures of Otto Porter, Juan Toscano-Anderson and Gary Payton II (who was later re-acquired at the trade deadline) also played a factor in the divide, according to Murdock. Not only did having the veterans stabilize the rotation, but they held the respect of both the old and young players. This season, the young players grew frustrated with their lack of minutes, Murdock writes. “That’s the normal NBA, and we haven’t had to deal with normal NBA,” Andre Iguodala told Murdock last month. “We’ve been in fantasyland for so long, and this year was more like the real NBA.”
- Poole was criticized throughout the season — and particularly in the postseason — for his shot selection, turnovers and poor defense. Yet after the Game 5 victory against the Lakers, Curry told Murdock that Poole was “the key” to bridging the present and the future, showing the Warriors still have faith in the 23-year-old.
- Poole’s future is reportedly up in the air, as the team might explore the trade market for him if it decides to make a cost-cutting move with the new CBA about to kick in. “I don’t know why I wouldn’t be [back],” Poole told Murdock. “It wasn’t a bad year. I mean, career highs in two categories. I was able to make history with Klay and Steph. My first game-winner. It was a lot of good things that happened this season. It wasn’t a bad season. Yes, I’m in the fabric. Yes, I belong here in this organization, bridging the gap. And I’m a young guy who was drafted here. We won a championship last year, and we have another chance to do it again. And I don’t know why anybody else would feel otherwise. I don’t think anybody is thinking like that.”
Nobody upset with Draymond punching Poole anymore hahaha.
I definitely can see all of Stephen Curry Klay Thompson and Draymond Green staying with the Golden State Warriors and playing with them their entire career.
I definitely think they need to get rid of Jordan Poole first chance they get. I’ve never been crazy about his game. He’s really just a solid 6th man to me. He don’t deserve max money. He takes terrible shots and a defensive liability. On top of that Draymond Green dropped him because his attitude ain’t no good.
Draymond dropped him cause Draymond is crazy and borderline insane. Dude has anger management issues given his history of assaulting people and should probably get some help before he tries to start something with someone who’s carrying.
Who walks up to a teammate, tries to intimidate them for no reason at practice, and when the teammate pushes them away decks the teammate? A mentally ill toddler who can’t control his emotions.
Michael Jordan sucker punched Steve Kerr. According to Jordan, it turned him into a better team mate. They went on to win the NBA Finals that year.
Jordan knocked Steve Kerr over in practice during drills. Kerr got up and shoved Jordan. Jordan decked him.
That’s not even comparable to what did Draymond dude.
Had Draymond and Poole been going hard in practice and they lost their tempers nobody would care as much. Happens in all sports tempers flare guys start fighting. Nfl nba mlb nhl
Draymond literally walked over to Poole unprovoked and started stuff for no reason.
Kerr did a LOT leading up to that though.
Years later, all GSW fans know why MJ did it…
@8rings Afterwards, MJ said he was being an “idiot”. He needed to become a better teammate. He needed to trust the guys on the floor with him. Phil Jackson agreed with MJ’s assessment.
@Foxtrot Try watching the video of the incident. Draymond got in Poole’s face. Poole then shoved Draymond. It happened during 5-on-5 drills. So yeah, it is the same.
Jordan drove to the paint and knocked down Kerr during a drill where they were matched up on each other. Kerr stood up and shoved Jordan to the ground. Jordan punched Kerr Kerr punched back.
You do realize we all have seen the video where Draymond gets in Pooles face while everybody is standing around right Giant? You ain’t fooling nobody man. Poole isn’t even looking at Draymond or anywhere near him when Draymond walks up and starts stuff. Poole literally just standing there.
Here’s a refresher of what happened between Poole and draymond for you. You seem a little iffy on the details
link to youtu.be
Not the same. Not even close.
@foxtrot You really believe the team was just standing around on the court, in their Uniforms, for no reason at all. They were practicing. Practices can get intense.
“Intense”
Everybody standing around waiting or walking to line up where theyre suppose to be.
Poole standing on the baseline not doing anything just standing there not even facing Draymond. Draymond walking to go lineup 5-10ft away from Poole.
Draymond then waits a couple seconds, leaves where he was lining up to go back and get in Pooles face.
“Intense”
Lmao. Good one man.
There was nothing intense about what was happening the moment Draymond decided to be stupid.
So by your logic Embiid should do his best Rocky impersonation and beat the sugar out of a few of their weakest players if he ever wants to win a chip? Great message.
That’s why Draymond dropped him? Lol. No, Draymond dropped him because he has no self-control and can’t manage his emotions. I cannot fathom how he “gained back the respect” of the front office. Had they not been playing a first year playoff team, his stomp would have cost them the first round series. His game is diminishing, too. Not as bad as Klay, but he’s nowhere near as effective as he used to be.
Golden State should blow it up and try with a different core around Steph. If they don’t, I think it could go south very quickly.
They do that and the 1st words you’ll hear out of Curry’s mouth will be a trade demand. He is not interested in a rebuild.
someone has a lot of participation ribbons in his room
Why on earth would you re-sign Draymond. How many players on big contracts can you get? So that’s 3 max deals, a 100 million in Wiggins and another now in Draymond? Get rid of this team cancer that made the chemistry akward all season
“Get rid of one of the primary reasons why they have 4 rings” – you sound stupid
“The primary reason”. More like the 4th reason lmao.
@8rings Steph Curry called Draymond the heart of the team.
The problem is, they can’t sign anyone else. And once over the cap, money don’t matter cause they making the most money And they got to spread it around the league. In fact the more money they make the more it benefits their competition through revenue sharing. So they are at a point where they need to spend the money.
Resigning him didn’t necessarily Mean giving him a max. Hopefully, Green wants to be a GSW enough and understand his value is highest with his current team. If he is willing to sign for a lot less (3/$45 mil) then I’m sure there’s deal to be made.
Greens market is limited. Win now teams desperate for that missing secret sauce (Philly, Suns, Knicks). But in some scenarios you have up and coming trams that may not want to risk damaging the culture they have thus far (Cavs, Sacramento, Pelicans, OKC). An interesting place might be the Grizzlies where a string veteran presence might be well used especially if he’s developed a relationship with Morant already. Drays from the streets but, for the most part, has been a model player OFF THE COURT. He absolutely is a hot head at times (often actually) but you never hear of him being reckless off the court. He could be a good mentor for Morant. He could be a much better version of an enforcer above Dillon Brooks. He can improve their team defense and offensive IQ. And I’ve again he would be joining a team with great offense from the guard position (Morant and Bane) but he doesn’t have to do all the rebounding and physicality on his own playing aside Jackson Jr. His lack of scoring can be covered by having 3 guys who can score 20+ ppg.
I always want to trade away Draymond and Poole
You’ll trade anything that moves.
You make it sound dirty.
A system guy who plays no D …..
I guess you believe me now …….
I still can’t believe they gave away Wiseman and let Payton walk. For Poole. Could of had all three. And let Poole walk after this yr. Might of even made it back to Finals. AD wouldn’t have owned Wiseman……
I never understood why people got so hot and bothered about Poole signing an extension by the deadline last October. He had been mostly a mediocre shooter in his 1st 3 seasons. A couple of buzz-beaters doesn’t make you a superstar. They almost cut him the previous season. They should have let him become a RFA. Could have had him cheaper, if he proved anything
Never understood the rush either. Maybe it was Meyers not getting an extension. He wanted to show his new jewel ….
It’s absolutely crazy that you guys are saying all this about a guy who has increased his PPG every season of his career.
@8rings That’s easy to do when you shot is terrible your 1st season and a half. Poole did get sent down to figure things out. And this past year showed him losing whatever he found in Santa Cruz. Could he rediscover it? Sure. But, he has a lot of work to do in the off-season. If not, he is kinda dead weight.
AD wouldn’t have owned Wiseman because it is not possible to own someone who is sitting on the end of the bench.
Yeah great insight.
Keep Wiseman to sit him. I could have gotten him ready for playoffs. They only needed 20 mins a gm. It’s called developing talent. Warriors are suppose to be experts at that. Only had two yrs to do it. I doubt you ever seen Wiseman….. you think I’m talking Kerr a wiseman …… go back to sleep. Adults are talking HErE ….
I actually agree with this take, Kerr absolutely could have given Wiseman a better run than he did.
Why did Kerr, after it was established that the Looney-Dray-Wiggins-Klay-Steph lineup was the best, why did Kerr then not simply sub one of them out for one of the young players, and get them running that way? Nope, Kerr played Wiseman with the 2 way scrubs and lineups he had no chance of winning with. Kerr is really good with turning diamonds into turds.
What we said lol. Giants74 and I. Is there was no rush to sign him. You could have had all three of them this yr. And then signed him if you wanted. Money has never been an issue with Warriors. Poole signing is the Only reason Payton was let go. Then getting back Payton to right a wrong. Cost you Wiseman. It just seems sloppy and dumb. Something I never thought Warriors were.
@al 8rings is pretty clueless. In another post, he said Oakland is cold miserable place to see a night baseball game. I’ve lived in the Bay Area 60 years. Oakland is in the mid-70s at gametime. And the wind has died down by then. The A’s biggest problem has always been the owners. You could build 2 new stadiums by how much money they have cost MLB.
Wiseman better figure it out quick to be as good as you think he is. He’s a minus player and big men and longevity don’t go together. He’s young and still can turn it around but his skill set and iq aren’t great. He’s gotta lot of work to do to be even a winning player as a role player let alone a star
Yea Payton over Poole all day. Should have won DPOY last year
I hope to see KlayDray and Steph run it back altogether once more
The hope is Wiggins gets back to 2022 Wiggins. I don’t think he ever got back to 100% after the absence this year. He’s such an underrated player and when he’s good that system really feeds off it
There’s going to be a lotta {hit pieces} in the media the next month. Best to probably just ignore and enjoy your summer GSW fans, they’ll be more about the authors narrative than anything substantial
They have to get bigs. Even if only for 15-20 mins a gm. You go thru AD, Jokic, Ayton you need big bodies. And rim protection is also a good thing.
For right or wrong I think they’d prefer a big that could stretch the floor more rather than the rim protection.
Len /Dieng possible vet mins , Bamba would be interesting but might be outta price range. Thomas Bryant would be a good catch but again might be outta price range
They do a remarkable job on the def boards for their height and are fantastic grabbing o-rebs due to the spaced out defense they face. Don’t see huge investments at the 5 coming
You suit up 22 guys lol. You can have both. Every team should. It’s insane to me. In todays game. You play 7-8 guys. Every team should be able to go ten deep easy.
You play what you need for that series. It’s about winning.
Nah, Kerr HAS to go – it imperative to winning more titles. GSW needs a proper tactician who can also bring along young stars with the old ones – this season was proof positive Steve Kerr cannot and will not ever be able to do that.
Why you got a clock on him. Look what did in Detroit. He’s already proven his worth to them. He will haunt Warriors his whole career.
Look him up ….. oh you need me to do it for you ……
24 gms, 25.2 mins, 13 pts, 8 reb, 1 blk,
1.5 TO, FT 71.2%, FG 53.1%
All you needed from this 22yr old kid. Who is very intelligent, by the way. Is Defense and rebounding. You train him to give you 20 mins of that. Cause you got enough offense. Like Mitch with Knicks. It’s not that hard.
He’ll be better than Mitch. I guarantee that.
This was meant for …. @shawn kemp
Best thing that can happen to Warriors. Is Pistons get top pick. Then you go get him back like you got Payton. Plenty of teams will knocking on Pistons door then ….. Knicks better too.
Everyone talking about how they should trade Poole, y’all are so short sighted.
Curry is what 33, Dray and Klay both on expiring deals are well past their primes, Wiggins had a little regression and then Poole who in the regular season was underwhelming at times and disappeared during the playoffs.
They tried to do this rebuild while being competitive thing with wiseman Poole moody Kuminga but it clearly hasn’t worked out for them.
Young players need minutes and to learn from their mistakes not be played in short burst and told they can’t make any errors if they want to be on the floor. That’s what vets are for, good quality short minutes with little errors.
As for Poole, you guys want to trade your only good young player. It’s stupid. Klay and Dray are both well past it and on expiring deals, it’s definitely a smarter business decision to trade either or both of these two while they have value and rebuild around a backcourt of Curry and Poole. I’d promote Kuminga to be a starter alongside Wiggins. So really what your looking for in return is young players and picks with role players as cap filler.
Maybe you could try make some kinda sign and trade extension type deal with Dray where you send him somewhere he wants to go (ala returning home to Detroit) and you try get young bits from them.
Dray and a protected first for Bogdan and Duren.
Bogdan would be perfect for the GSW offence, and Duren would be a great young starting centre for them.
As for Klay, maybe you deal him and GP2 to say NY for say RJ Barrett, Fouriner, Toppin and a pair of first.
Then you have a team something like
Curry Poole Wiggins Bogdanovic Duren
Fouriner Barrett Kuminga Looney
Hope RJ takes the next step up as a starter which he is definitely capable of doing. Try develop Kuminga and Duren more, got the luxury of RJ and Bogi which Dlo in the win collum while you do this small rebuild and Fouriner as a role player for depth brings you picks
I doubt Green wants to go to Detroit even if he’s from the area. I’m positive he’s only want to go to a contender and a major market. He’s got a brand. Going to Detroit is going into obscurity.
