While the Warriors have some significant decisions to make on key players this offseason, their most notable free agent might be president of basketball operations Bob Myers, whose contract with the organization expires on June 30.
Warriors owner Joe Lacob has expressed a desire to sign Myers to a new contract and keep him at the top of the team’s front office hierarchy. However, if the veteran executive departs, there’s an expectation that Golden State will replace him with an internal promotion rather than launching a full-fledged search, according to Anthony Slater and Shams Charania of The Athletic, who identify vice president of basketball operations Mike Dunleavy Jr. as Myers’ “natural successor.”
Here’s more on the Warriors’ offseason following their season-ending loss to the Lakers on Friday:
- The Warriors are expected to have a conversation with Jonathan Kuminga‘s representatives this offseason about the young forward’s future, per Slater and Charania. Kuminga showed promise in his second NBA season, but saw his minutes fluctuate and wasn’t part of the regular rotation in the playoffs. If Kuminga isn’t assured of a full-time role in Golden State going forward, he may prefer to be somewhere he can play more, sources tell The Athletic.
- Jordan Poole‘s future with the Warriors is very much up in the air following a disappointing postseason, according to Slater and Charania, who suggest that the four-year veteran could be the odd man out if cost cutting is necessary. Poole’s four-year, $123MM extension will go into effect in 2023/24. Tim Kawakami of The Athletic explores the topic in more detail, writing that Poole isn’t necessarily part of Golden State’s core and suggesting that the team will probably explore the trade market for him this summer.
- As a result of the Warriors’ second-round playoff exit, Kevon Looney missed out on a $1MM bonus and Poole forfeited $500K in bonus money, tweets ESPN’s Bobby Marks. Those incentives will now be considered unlikely in 2023/24, slightly reducing both players’ cap charges.
- Yossi Gozlan of HoopsHype and John Hollinger of The Athletic preview the Warriors’ offseason, both noting that the team will be hard-pressed to re-sign key role player Donte DiVincenzo, who is a near lock to decline his player option. The Warriors will only have DiVincenzo’s Non-Bird rights, limiting them to offering a 20% raise on this year’s $4.5MM salary.
Thompson probably had the worse game of his career. 3 for 19 is a big reason they lost. The playoff ended like the season inconsistent from game to game. They need to add taller players the small lineup only works on small teams. I am hoping Bob Meyers leaves because he is part of the problem of a bad roster.
As terrible as Poole was, Klay was even a bigger disappointment for me. He played great in the regular season but simply didnt deliver in the postseason. He cant be relied upon at all physically in the future.
Exactly, Poole and Klay shooting extremely badly (not even defense related, just brick city off open shots) is why we lost this series. But the fact we won other games by driving to the rim and blocking out AD, and never did that in game 6, says Kerr had an awful plan in place that was always going to fail, as Kerr is literally quoted as saying he loves losing and going 15-50 than he does coaching in the playoffs. I dont want a coward coach like that, I want one who will do everything to win.
The warrior need more depth and a center . I would explore trading Poole and maybe Wiggins . I believe Thompson will bounce back next season and he earned the benefit of the doubt .
Chuck is right… They cooked…
Steph has some juice and there’s some pieces there… But if they’re gonna pay big money to Green and Thompson than they aren’t going to have many pieces around them…
They’re not going to pay the big 3 big money, there’s already many reports saying all 3 are going to take pay cuts to get a better roster that isnt like 9 SGs, 1 C and 1 PG.
If the Lakers defeat the Nuggets then the Warriors might swallow this defeat a little easier, but their defense is needing some work this off-season.
That is a big If. Lakers faced 2 teams without a Center now they play a team with the best center in the NBA. I see the Nuggets going all the way this year. I bet money on Nuggets at start of the season so I am hoping its a big pay day.
Jokic is probably motivated after his MVP award was given away to Embid
first time Nuggets been fully healthy in the playoffs. AD vs Jokic is going to be special.
Lol jojo should have had back to back.
Can’t be that big. I’m sure the odds were in Denver’s favor from the start of the season.
Yup, Kerr’s outright moronic 3 and 4 guard lineups were never ever going to win you another title like that, last years Celtics is the only team youre going to beat in the Finals with 3 guards, plus you cant have Poole, Klay AND Steph shooting be not up to bar and expect to beat anyone.
Kerr really is the only reason why GSW didn’t win the title this year – he got a perfect roster he immediately threw a hissy fit over and played scrub 2 way players that GSW fans who pay good money to watch live do NOT pay to see. Kerr was incompetent at every step, got outcoached regularly and tried to send ALL of Wiseman, Kuminga and Moody packing, but only succeeded in the first one.
Kerr is the reason big name FAs never come here, its why we have to settle for DiVincenzo over Caruso. KD outright said he’d never play for Kerr, not GSW, again. I could have coached this team to easy 4-1 series wins, me. Kerr is so worthless at his job he got given a team no one can lose with and proceeded to find ways to lose like giving Ty Jerome major minutes in any game, while never developing Kuminga, Wiseman and Moody in the same way.
FIRE. STEVE. KERR. NOW.
You need to stop with the fire steve kerr nonsense. Replace him with who? C’mon don’t be silly
The lakers are gonna lose the next series because the one thing about denver they play great defense. Something maybe the warriors should learn from get players who can play defense and rebound.
Not a huge fan of any team in particular but you have to wonder about some of the shots these guys were taking in last night’s game. I get it, you win with your snipers like Curry and Clay and you lose with them. But when they got down by double digits, it either looked like “going through the motions” time or you had Divencenzo taking shots—and missing them
I dunno. Pundits are saying Kerr would probably like to keep his big three around, along with Wiggins and Looney, but beyond them anyone should be expendable. Hard to see these guys having another run in them without some big pieces coming in
DiVincenzo had not played well in prior games but last night he was 4 of 8 from 3 and 6 of 12 overall (50%). He was the only guy other than Steph to score in double figures. He played 25 minutes. In other words he was the least of their problems in last night’s game. But thanks for pretending to know what you are watching.
What about Klay Thompson? He played terrible the last two series. This off season he needs to get in the gym and build up his leg muscles and his arms.
Didn’t know the President of his fan club was on board. Guess your judgment was clouded by your adoration
Simply put, he was a second class observer through much of the series. Wonder he’ll be next season
Poole Kuminga Moody for Gobert or Towns
1) They need to get more athletic players. I noticed how slow their transition defense was against the Lakers. Age definitely caught up to them. Maybe they swing a deal for Jon Issac who can be utilized better with Steph?
2) I don’t believe there “paycuts” in NBA. Klay is on a legacy contract now. His best days are behind him. He looked slow and tired on both ends of the floor. They need to convince him to be a 6th man now and bring a new 2 guard into the lineup.
3) You let Green go. He’s been the heart and soul of that team but his extracurricular activities wear the team down when they’re trying to compete for a title. Kuminga should be their starting 4 next year. He has all the physical tools to replace Dray next year.
4) They need a backup PG when Steph is out to run the show. This offense lacked a real floor general in the 2nd unit. Playing Poole and expect him to be the point was disastrous for this team when his IQ isn’t that great to begin with. Maybe a Poole for Heyward swap would help both teams?
5) It was a historical run for this franchise. I’m not a GSW fan, but to see a team that’s not Lakers/Celtics/Heat or Spurs and become a dynasty was so refreshing for the league. No ranking was needed. They drafted well, they coached their guys to championship level and they won routinely at the highest level. Nothing to be ashamed of in a GSW fan and declaring the dynasty is over. This run will be discussed 50 years from now like 60’s Celtics, 80’s Lakers, my 90’s Bulls, Kobe/Shaq Lakers, etc. Hold your head up high dubnation, this team proved you can win a title with just elite HOF shooting without a big man. Congrats to a helluva run.
Well stated, although I don’t see them ever allowing Green to go somewhere else
The guard play here was particularly atrocious, besides Thomason’s shooting woes. To see Devincenzo and Poole take mind numbing shots while continually getting beaten by LA’s guards while on defense had to be disappointing to their fans. Nothing against the Lakers back court, but I couldn’t see them playing that kind of defense against the top guards that are left and going anywhere
FIRE STEVE KERR AND GSW WILL NEVER LOSE AGAIN
Hey, are the Warriors still “my” NBA champions! HAHAHA!
You plan on having Steph on a cryogenic tube? Boy, your takes are weird af lol
Emphasis on “cry” lol
Warriors are done OVER
They gave away their future. When they gave away Wiseman. For that alone Myers should be gone. And Kerr should be on notice
Only way I see them as significant. Is if they sign n trade Dre to a contender or team that wants him. All small bigs age fast in NBA.
I have always been a Kuminga guy. But I can’t believe a two yr player who is 20yrs old. Is asking for anything. That’s gotta be false.
Best thing that can happen to Warriors. Is Pistons get the #1 pick. Then Wiseman would (Dre to Pistons) be available. I doubt they move Duren.
I love both of them …….
Your knicks did not look very good too. just like the warriors inconsistent throughout the season.
We are not defending champs and aging bro. Do t compare lol.
Knicks overachieved this yr. Heat played better and clearly were more experienced. It’s a good step for us. This is about Warriors. And their future. Got tough decisions to make to stay relevant. Poole was a terrible move. Considering you had time to sign him. But worse was giving up on Payton and Wiseman. Cause of the signing. I said it when it happened. You could have kept all three by waiting to sign him.
I am not a Bob Meyers fan so yes he made a lot of big mistakes. Not even close to being the same team as last year. Knicks are like the warriors when its hard to improve being over the cap. Payroll is going to kill the warriors unless they make tough decisions and let Green and Thompson go.
I’m not a Lakers guy by any stretch, but if you look at the moves they made down the stretch, your point is even more valid. They brought in guys who could be called “under the radar” and made a plan that augmented their big guns.
I appreciate what Golden State has done in their era, but they sure didn’t use a great deal of foresight
I would have given Laker’s GM the award he took a bad roster and made it into a good team.
Jordan Poole has one of the worst contracts I have ever seen in the NBA. Everyone in the Warriors franchise has smartest man in the room vibes. Turns out it was Poole’s agent.
Only reason Poole got the money was Meyer’s big ego thinking he scored a franchise player in the draft. I am hoping Meyers is gone and takes Poole with him.
Watching “fans” turn on their organization less than a year after winning a championship is fascinating.
Never turned. I have never been a big Meyers fan. Poole played last year for a big deal then didn’t improve. i always been against him getting a big contract. Poole needs to be in the gym and work on his defense. His offense will come back if he doesn’t try to over dribble.
Anyone remember that song by Semisonic…”closingggg timeee”.
Didn’t you say that 2 years ago but here we are again.
No true fan turns on their team lol. They are just pissed they lost. If you were a real basketball guy. You would understand that.
Need bigs.
IMO, Klay Thompson can no longer be relied upon to be a number two option on offense. He’s not the dead-eye shooter that he was before the injury. And, the Warriors can’t continue to play 3 on 5 on offense with Green and Looney playing together for extended minutes. If the G.M. can’t find a way to get another All Star to play next to Steph? Then it may be time to breakup the core of this team?
