The Wizards, who are in the market for a new head of basketball operations after parting ways with Tommy Sheppard last month, have registered “formal interest” in Warriors executive Bob Myers, Marc Stein reports at Substack.
Myers, Golden State’s general manager since 2012, is taking some time this spring to weigh his future with his contract set to expire. He and the Warriors are said to be far apart on a new deal, opening the door for Washington reach out and gauge his interest in the Wizards’ job.
While it’s hard to blame the Wizards for trying, Stein says the expectation in Golden State is that Myers won’t work in the NBA next season if he doesn’t remain with the Warriors.
As Stein explains, Myers has close relationships with Warriors head coach Steve Kerr and core players like Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green. If he chooses to leave them, it would likely be to take a break and to spend more time with his family rather than to jump right into a high-ranking position in another organization.
The Wizards are moving deliberately as they search for a new top basketball executive. By all accounts, they’ve only formally met with two candidates so far: Pelicans general manager Trajan Langdon and Clippers general manager Michael Winger. With the NBA draft just over a month away, Washington will presumably accelerate the process soon and make a hire sometime before June 22.
As for Myers, Stein says that the Warriors’ lead exec is expected to hold his end-of-season media session with Bay Area media at some point in the coming week. It’s unclear whether Myers will be prepared to offer clarity on his plans for next season at that time.
As if the word isn’t already out around the NBA that the Wizards have a ‘Pick me’ sign ready for any NBA exec with playoff success on their resume.
Wizards would offer GM huge money
My prediction
5-year $60MM (base $50MM and $10MM bonus)
let’s see what Bob Meyers can actually do. I hope he goes to Washington. He gets a lot of praise but his drafts has not been very good the last 5 years.
Look at the hit rates for picks in the 24-30 range and he is better than avg. Wiseman didnt work, partially because the time he should have been able to play with lower stakes and grow he was injured for, but he was the pick at 2 with ANT gone at the time. When they made the pick Wiseman was a real reasonable consensus choice around the NBA as a whole. I think eventually he will still be a pretty good player to it just may take 5 years before it happens.
Myers isnt leaving one NBA head job for another though. GSW already offered him a deal that would be top of the pay scale for an exec, but he can make way more money doing speaking engagements and media then being a NBA exec for any team, without the pressure or hours/travel.
So how many picks of his in the 24-30 range pan out? 1
Poole, Loon, and PBJ looks interesting at least with his size and shooting. Anytime you pick outside the lottery its a bit of a crap shoot. I still think both Kuminga and Moody will be useful rotation players. Maybe this is all a ploy to keep the numbers down for extensions?
Wiseman didn’t work because Steve Kerr refused to do his job in a case of cut and dry malpractice.
Why did we never see a Looney-Kuminga-Dray-Klay-Steph lineup for more than 5 minutes? That lineup should have started vs the Lakers and would have destroyed them had Kerr not arbitrarily blacklisted Kuminga for no reason whatsoever, so the awful Donte DiVincenzo can cause the team to lose, because he should have been 9-10 on the bench, not 6-7.
Look at it and answer your own question
Kerr was clueless with wiseman then would throw him under the bus and blame him. I’m glad he got a ring though
I guess Meyers gets credit for Looney and Poole but that’s it. Curry was picked by the previous regime and Jerry West was the guy who went to bat for Klay and Dray. Meyers’ worst pick has to be Jacob Evans. He was supposed to be a ready to go 3 and D guy but was useless from day 1. His shot was broken and he had no lateral quickness so he couldn’t defend NBA wings. Whoever scouted him should have been fired.
Not forget how they traded 2 second round picks and money for Smiley only to release him the next year.
I recall reading that Smiley was a Kirk Lacob special. Which, if true, should make fans leery of him taking more of a role in basketball decisions.
Warriors need Jerry West back so bad
The Jerry West of 10 or 15 years ago maybe. Not the current 84 yr old West.
Come on dude ????
Wiseman, Moody, Kuminga, Poole as a late pick
Last yr was bad. Still waiting for Baldwin
it’s tough to pick late.
There is always Brett Brown
Checking back into the star studded cast that has be able to evolve the Minnesota Timberpuppies into the NBA Powerhouse they are today, leads to speculation that the Wizards should be reaching out to:
Kevin McHale
Jim Stack
David K-A-H-N
Milt Newton
Scott Layden
Gersson Rosas
Sashin Gupta
ALTHOUGH
We all know that, if interested, the inside track
belongs to
K—A—H—N !!!
How can Wizards afford this guy? Aren’t they still paying Gilbert Arenas??
I would Resign in golden state until the wagon completely falls apart and everything is fire wood, then go and try somewhere else
Sure but then they would say he was not able to manage the transition and left the cupboards bare.
Yes, please take Myers and make him bring Kerr with him.
Wizards do need someone. Here he won’t have the pressure. Wizards need help.
I see development as the most important aspect. In todays draft and finding talent. Players coming in are young. Look at what Heat do. They are the best at it. Knicks never used the G-league till this administration came in. The G-league should be a strong tool for every NBA team. Players need to play to get better. It’s that simple. Every NBA team should have a G-league team. Not all do today.
It’s good that this HEAT run has brought player development in the limelight …… what’s funny is, the HEAT has been doing this a long time, and it’s only when they’re on a deep playoff run that words like “player development” and “undrafted players” are suddenly being used by ESPN and other media.
SPURS, RAPTORS have good programs as well.
Exactly mike. That’s why I say poo poo to those who complain about their draft lottery results. If you look at some teams you could conclude it doesn’t matter where you draft it’s how you draft and who you draft and then of course how you fill out your training camp roster. It’s also how you scan the waiver wire. Miami a perfect example and of course especially this season. Beautiful job.
Hire me I’ll work for half that
