At a post-draft press conference, president of basketball operations Brad Stevens expressed hope that the Celtics can work out an extension with newly acquired big man Kristaps Porzingis, writes Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe. Speaking shortly after the three-team deal that brought Porzingis to Boston was finalized, Stevens said he provides the team with plenty of flexibility.
“He can play defensively the way we want to,” Stevens said. “He’s a deterrent at the rim, and he’s a super-skilled basketball player. We didn’t post up a ton this year, but to be able to throw the ball in the post and just shoot over a switch and do it so efficiently and effectively is a big deal, let alone being able to play behind the line, shoot the ball or drive it, or those types of things. He brings a lot to our team. You can envision, as I can envision, some of the lineups we can put out there size-wise right now, pretty intriguing and without dropping any skill at all.”
Porzingis picked up his $36MM option for 2023/24 to make the trade possible, so he’ll be an unrestricted free agent next summer if a new agreement isn’t reached. Beginning July 6, he will be eligible for an extension worth up to $77MM over two years.
There’s more from Boston, all courtesy of Himmelsbach:
- As excited as he is to add Porzingis, Stevens admitted it was difficult to part with Marcus Smart, who was sent to Memphis in the deal. Smart spent nine years with the Celtics, starting with Stevens’ second season as head coach, and Himmelsbach notes that Stevens choked up a little when talking about his departure. “Obviously everybody loved the way he plays and how hard he plays, but also his work in the community,” Stevens said. “We’re all really grateful to have had Marcus in our life for as long as we’ve had and are sad to see him go, but know that he’s going to have a huge impact on a really good Memphis team.”
- Stevens is optimistic about Malcolm Brogdon, even though the Clippers pulled out of an earlier version of the three-team trade because of concerns over Brogdon’s health. L.A. reportedly didn’t want to commit to the deal without having a chance to perform a physical on Brogdon, who suffered an injury to his right arm in the Eastern Conference Finals. Stevens told Himmelsbach he’s not sure if Brogdon will need surgery, but he isn’t worried that it will be a long-term issue.
- The Celtics were willing to trade down several times in Thursday’s draft because they had numerous targets they would have been happy with, Stevens adds. They wound up with Arkansas forward Jordan Walsh, who worked out twice in Boston. “He’s a good prospect,” Stevens said. “He’s young. We don’t expect him to come in and take the world on fire. He has a special ability laterally with his wingspan to, like, swallow people up defensively. He really creates havoc with his arms and with his energy and with his ability to move his feet.”
Crazy how the perceived value of Marcus Smart and KP changed so drastically within the last six months. One year ago you would have been stabbed by a Cs fan for suggesting losing Smart for KP.
Smart has always been overvalued by Cs fans. They’re no different from other fan bases in that regard.
Marcus Smart is a great fit for Memphis. On and Off the court. The Celtics will miss his leadership.
There is a reason why Porzingis is always playing on losing teams despite getting his stats. Porzingis has not done well as a “role” player. This is why he is no longer in Dallas. They were looking for many of the same things the Celtics were. KP thought he was in Dallas as a co-superstar with Luka. They were winning! He didn’t do well when he was “featured” enough. KP, like Brogdon and Time Lord … have to stay healthy. Celtics trying to win a ring with 3 key rotation guys who have significant injury histories.
Crazy how KP was a franchise corner stone in NY, ended up being traded to Washington for Dinwiddie and has now ended up in Boston along with 2 first round picks for Marcus Smart.
You’d have though he must’ve dropped off to near in playable but he’s still putting up over 20 points per game.
Yea Celtics fans are delusional. They don’t that all the time. Like when they first got Horford he was a superstar, then when he left they were like “oh he’s over the hill! his career is over! Philly is so dumb!!!” The. They get him back and ” oh that was such a great pick up, Horford is worth all the money! He does the little things!!!!!”
Haha
Man stop making up narratives no Celtic fan has ever said that Al Horford was a Superstar what most Celtics fans said when he first joined the team back in 2016 was that he was an All-Star player and he had a good all-around game. And when he joined Philly as a FA we all understood why the team didn’t want to re-sign him and that was because he was still in his prime and he wanted one last big contract and we didn’t want to re-sign him at the 100 mill Philly gave him. But keep hating when the Celtics win banner 18 you’re gonna be one of the thousand of Celtics haters real quiet
Good move by Stevens. They get a legit starter/scorer in a position of need, insurance as Time Lord seems to be always injured.
They also clear-up their guard logjam.
The CELTICS can now target 50 3-point attempts per game, instead of the old 40.
What kind of guard logjam???
I’m reading that media narrative BS for a week now…
After trading Smart they have White and an always injured Brogdon, nothing more… (I won’t count Pritchard who’s unplayable in the playoffs for a contender). How can be zero PG and 1,5 combo guard a logjam???
Because White is a similar level of player and Brogdon is a better player…
Now there is a clear 3 tier hierarchy at that position…
I hear that Jaylen Brown guy at SG out of Cal is a pretty decent basketball player.
Yes, but he doesn’t have the handle of a lead guard, so the C’s are thin at guard from an offensive initiator standpoint.
You don’t need an initiator in 2023 basketball. Neither of the teams in the Finals had a real PG. What you need are guards that can shoot and that can recognize bad situations and pass out of them. Brown, Brogdon, and White can all do that.
I am curious to see if Tatum might spend some time as guard, as Horford can now slide over to SF with Porzingis on the team.
I hear that someone named Jaylen Brown played forward all Year at California along a three guard offense with Ivan Rabb at C
I also hear that Boston started Smart & White over 60 games at PG&SG with Brown at SF
I don’t hear but see how Brown handled the ball and that he’s still best suited at SF
I hope and believe you’re wrong about Payton Pritchard. Point guard of the year in college. Makes threes at a high percentage. Moves his feet quick and can stay in front of guards. Had a triple double in the only game of the season he played minutes.
@Beach …….. Pritchard is playable. The fact that he hardly sees minutes, there’s a definite guard logjam.
On a few occasions, Pritchard had said that he wants to be traded, yet Stevens keeps him, no doubt sees value in him as a rotation piece.
From @warson’s post, he doesn’t seem to realize that there’s a regular season to be played prior to the playoffs.
@mike.honcho you don’t realize Boston’s trying to win a chip not to be last years Sactamento… There’s a regular season that’s why I’m saying having 3 good guard on your roster isn’t a logjam especially with an injured Brogdon… Zero PG and two combo guard + ball handling Brown is rather thin both in regular and post season
Payton Pritchard clarified that. He said he’d like to stay but be a “significant part” of a team. Meaning to me he wants to play minutes and important minutes. Somewhere. And I believe he deserves that chance here with the Celtics … which I hope to see this season.
I really like Pritchard, but he isn’t a rotational level player in the playoffs for a contender, he never was in his three years. PoY in college? Its not college anymore, or do you think Tyler Hansbrough is/was a high level nba player? Yeah that triple double on the last reg season game where only G-Leaguers played and scored 40s… great…
The Bob Cousy Award: Best Point Guard in the USA and a triple double in the regular season in the NBA, with 8 threes, 14 rebounds, 11 assists and 30 points are both FACTS.
Payton Pritchard is not a rotation player on a title contender. Be careful what you ask for.
That’s your opinion. And I believe in jinxes and you, Very Berry, and warson, have just jinxed.
Last year you picked the Nets to win it all.
Enough said.
Brown is our SG now so we have Brogdon and White as PG. Pritchard will be fine he is taller than steph and better defensively.
Payton Pritchard gave Tyler Herro trouble when Herro was hot. I think Payton’s quicker moving his feet than our other guards.
Ever heard of Jaylen Brown?
Also opens up minutes at the 2 for hauser
It’ll be interesting how the Celtics now go about FA and building this roster. I think the move was warranted and made sense but it’ll be key getting the right guys around what you now have.
White Brown Tatum KP Rob Will
Brogdan … … … Horford
You’ve got options on Grant Williams.
Does Payton Pritchard crack the line up now?
The only other two guys signed for next year are Hauser and Kornet.
You don’t need anymore bigs and don’t need any point guards. If anything all you want to do is add 3 and D wings and forwards. You’ve got some vets and some young guys I’d continue to mix and match ages of the guys you bring in. You want win now guys but you also want hungry competitive kids
Kornet’s $2.4M contract is not guaranteed; Celtics can put that money to better use.
Luke Kornet can play & is always undervalued because he’s no muscle man but with Kristaps Porzingis here now likely Luke gets even fewer minutes. Good backup for our front line and I’d like to see him shoot threes again, not just 13 shots all last season long. He put up 193 threes for NY a few years back at 36%.
Boy, I hope Payton Pritchard gets to play! I know we had experienced vets Marcus, Derrick & Brogdon ahead of him but I thought he was wasted all last season, only getting a minute here & there of garbage time.
Porzingus the dingus had his unicorn season last year where he was actually healthy, yet, the Wizards still only won 35 games. Obviously he is a no impact player. Not sure why people think he’s going to bring anything to Boston if by a miracle he stays healthy
Celtics got better. They can protect KP on D. With Al n Robert. Which will make him a a rim deterrent. They will help him adjust to team D. That’s really where you have to watch this team. Cause KP does not want to bang. Offensively it makes Celtics a dangerous team. Imo he’s with the right team now. He can take the pressure off Jalen and Jason. And is a good target for an outlet from drivers. Celtics got better
If you need to be “protected” on D, that makes you a liability. How does a liability make you better?
Facts!
I guess you two don’t understand a baller talking ball. He’s coming off his best offensive yr. I need to tell you that. He’s always been soft on D since he got hurt. But he does block shots from weak side. And AGAIN having 4s who bang helps him be better on D. Is that hard to understand for you.
You’re not a liability if you got help. It’s why they call it a team sport. Some teams are better at it than others. Do you even watch the Heat. It’s all about fit and chemistry. KP is at an age where he understands winning is important. And knows this can be a good fit for him. Oakley looked out for Ewing. Robinson looked out for Duncan. The Davis duo looked for Smits. Must I go on lol
Haha what?
The problem with your logic of it being a team sport, is that the other team, is also a team. Meaning 5 on 5. Basic “baller” knowledge. Meaning, if one player needs to help another player, that player is leaving their man open.
Dude, you’re sounding like a Boston fan right now. Like look at you examples. Oakley looked out for Ewing? Robinson looked out for Duncan? You’re really comparing Ewing and Duncan to Porstinkus? Dude Ewing and Duncan were really good to great defenders. Come on, that ain’t close to relevant.
I get what youre saying, close gaps, block the lane, rotate, but that breaks down if your defender you’re helping is weak. Like cool, Robinson helps Duncan, then Duncan rotates to Robinsons man. That ain’t the same as Porstinkus rotating to another man. Not even close. And you want to talk about “ballers” talking about ball? Just stop. You’re out of your league.
Ole knickerbocker has a few loose screws
Stevens has already said Porzingis can fit into and play our team defense.
Seriously you need an explanation about his best offensive season ever …..
Really lol …….. I do t even like KP.
It’s a two way sport. Even you must be able to see offensively he can make this team dangerous. Heat don’t beat them if they had him.
But like I said in first post. Defensively is where we need to look at. Hence the help he will get. He’s with the right team. Soon you will see that. If you don’t understand what help is. Then why are we talking. If you don’t think this team can help him be better on D. Then why are we talking. I’m not arguing to be right. I’m giving you facts on why it should work. But even if he’s the worst defender in the history of the gm. What are you going to do with……….
23.2 pts, 8.4 reb, 2.7 ast, 1.5 blk
.85 Ft%, .50 FG%, .385 (3pt%)
I need to explain this to you too. All this info is out there. Must I have to find it for you. Learn the gm and how to explain it. You do t need me to explain it to you. A real baller understands baller talk.
So YES Celtics got BETTER ……..
I’m trying to take you seriously, but your Duncan comment got me all messed up. Like you’re talking about being protected on D, and then you reference as Duncan as some one that was protected on D. Yo, Tim Duncan is the All Time leader in All Defensive selection!!! why tf would he need protection? Like really? Are you okay?
And you’re trying to use his last year stats as reason for why he makes a team better? Well how did that work out for the Wizards last year? They literally didn’t get a single win better. What are you talking about?
Bro protected means having your back. Once he feels it from his team. And I do mean feel it. He will adjust. We all know D is where he can hurt Celtics. It’s why I mention them protecting him. Every player needs help on D. Imo KP has been more timid cause of his injuries. That’s why I say this is a good situation for him. Cause D is where he needs help. And as a contending team that plays D. They will have his back. This is a good mix imo. Those points a gm will help immensely. Boston fans will love him, you know that. They still have to do it. I just see a good mix here.
Heat are
Not sneaking up on anyone next yr. They have to do something. Bucks healthy and Celtics are better right now. And the rest of East is getting better. I’m not counting them out. Cause I did that last yr. Imo Celtics are better.
