3:49pm: The three teams are closing in on an agreement, reports Charania (Twitter link). According to Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe (Twitter link), negotiations on the deal are “nearing the final stages.”
The Wizards are expected to receive the No. 30 pick in Thursday’s draft from the Clippers as part of the potential trade, Charania adds (via Twitter). Amir Coffey would also be sent from L.A. to D.C., according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, who cautions (via Twitter) that there’s more work to do to complete an agreement.
2:34pm: There’s a “high possibility” of the three-team deal getting done, per Charania and Jared Weiss of The Athletic. The Athletic’s duo adds that Gallinari would likely be involved in the trade, since Boston needs to send out additional salary. Gallinari would head to Washington, tweets Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports.
1:55pm: The Celtics, Wizards, and Clippers are engaged in serious talks about a possible three-way trade that would send Porzingis to Boston, Brogdon to Los Angeles, and Marcus Morris and draft compensation to Washington, reports Charania (Twitter link).
More pieces would need to be included and it remains to be seen whether Porzingis will opt in, so nothing’s done yet. However, the framework makes some sense for all three teams, including the Clippers, who have been on the lookout for backcourt help.
1:18pm: The Celtics have interest in acquiring big man Kristaps Porzingis and are talking to the Wizards about a possible trade that would involve Porzingis picking up his 2023/24 player option, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter video link).
Porzingis’ decision on a $36MM player option is reportedly due on Wednesday, unless he and the Wizards agree to push back that deadline. If he were to opt out, the 27-year-old would be on track to reach unrestricted free agency and couldn’t be dealt this offseason unless it happened in a sign-and-trade deal.
Acquiring a player via sign-and-trade hard-caps a team at the first tax apron, so it would be simpler for the Celtics – a projected taxpayer – to trade for Porzingis if he were to pick up his option. That would make him immediately trade-eligible and wouldn’t result in hard-cap complications.
Porzingis is coming off perhaps the best season of his career. He averaged 23.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.5 blocks in 65 games (32.6 MPG) in 2022/23, posting a shooting line of .498/.385/.851.
Still, Porzingis’ future in D.C. is murky following the upheaval in the team’s front office. The new group, led by president of basketball operations Michael Winger, is in the process of resetting the Wizards’ roster, starting with a trade that will send Bradley Beal to Phoenix.
According to Charania, the team hasn’t closed the door on working out a new deal with Porzingis, but the big man is receiving interest from rival suitors. It’s also unclear if he’d want to stick with the Wizards through a retooling process.
Charania doesn’t clarify what pieces the Celtics might include in an offer for Porzingis, but the team would have a variety of options for salary-matching in a trade. Malcolm Brogdon and Danilo Gallinari is one hypothetical combination that would work. Derrick White and Marcus Smart will each make $18MM+ next season and could be traded, though Brogdon and his $22.5MM salary seem more likely to be included in an offer.
Robert Williams and Al Horford are among Boston’s other potential trade pieces if the team envisions Porzingis replacing one of them in the frontcourt rather than supplementing them. Restricted free agent Grant Williams could be a sign-and-trade chip. It at least seems safe to assume the Celtics will keep Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown out of any offer for Porzingis.
It’s also worth noting that the C’s have traded away their 2023 first-round pick and swap rights to their 2028 first-round selection, but are otherwise fairly unencumbered in offering future first-rounders.
That would be Brogdon going the other way. Not sure I’d do that if I’m the Celtics.
Interesting. Brogdon, Horford, and Muscala for Porzingis works perfectly in the trade machine. That’s only if Porzingis picks up his PO. Then maybe route Horford to the Lakers for Mo Bamba? That should get the tanking started for the Wizards to begin their rebuild.
This could actually make sense for BOS even assuming they’re paying both Brown and Tatum supermax as it appears they’ll do. Those extensions won’t kick in until the year after next year, and the year after that, respectively. KP6 would only be signed for next year. If they can shed some salary beyond next season (Brogdon, Smart, White, Williams, Horford), it might actually help them reset the rest of the roster after the extensions.
Problem is that would involve WSH taking on longer term $$, which they refused to do in the Beal trade. But maybe a few FRPs would change their view here.
Nice post, didn’t even take an hr or a new HR thread to have the merits ring true. OFC it probably mostly fell on deaf ears but circle gets the square, nice job
* I’m not as critical on the Beal trade as you but that comes with the covet of Wash being able to use future cap to turn into value. I would hope they’d look at housing a bad 2 yr or even 3 yr contract today for value instead of only seeking out expiring’s. But its Wash so who knows
I was critical of the Beal trade, not for what they got (cap space, I wasn’t expecting much more), but because almost all of it was a year removed – so they could have waited. Now, if they can use the space in advance, then that flaw is remedied. Maybe the final product in this deal doesn’t do that, but there is likely still an opportunity to flip LAC expirings for more picks.
I look at the whole Wiz thing as 1 big project
If they are deciding to go under then Beal was the first thing that had to go – Ida done the same deal if those were the options and I had made my mind up in one direction .
I might not have popped a bottle of champagne but I would have gotten a good nights rest if I was Winger
Still can get Kp value, think they have to (try) their hardest to get S&T value from Kuzma *(perhaps that’s where the dead bounce salary comes in ) and I like Delonte and Morris for a little value as well
I just get the uneasy feeling they feel they need to clean the books 100% by next year so maybe just maybe heaven sends a JBrown to fall into their laps . Debatable if that’s even a gift on max but not getting off track the point moreso is they can and should muddy up the ledger a little bit the next 2~3 years if they want to expedite this re-build
Washington could have moved Beal at TD last yr. And would have gotten a lot more. To not even get a 1st rd pick. Is criminal. It’s nothing but a salary dump for Washington. It shows their ineptitude. They could have waited during season now. And then get his true value. How can you go full rebuild with No extra picks. Even Duncan, Herro, Jovic is a better future for Washington. They would have got at least one 1st rd pick. I’m shocked they didn’t use the Knicks to drive the price up. This was amateur hour …..
At least KP was a FA. So everything is gravy for him.
Celtics is actually a good place for him.
AL- This isn’t last year tho and its a brand new front office
Points taken but I’m failing to see the connection on where Winger stood at last Saturday’s night dinner to now
Really ……. you didn’t know this at TD.
There has been Beal trades for three yrs now. So you give him away now. That’s your answer. Anyone who plays in the NBA. Is saying one thing right now
Cue Knicks Hart ….
“Wow not even a first rd pick”
It’s amateurish lol
It’s one of the biggest flaws of many modern NBA FO’s. The belief that the best approach in building a team is to do a 100% demo to the ground, and build back from scratch. I can see where the notion would have some intuitive appeal, though mostly to people who’ve never actually built (rebuilt) anything. The World is muddy.
If im Boston I’m trading pick 35, rob Williams, Gallo, Pritchard, and future pick(s)
If your trading r Williams than you can find better deals
Thank god you aren’t Boston!
That’s insane.
Brodgon, Danilo, Pritchard, muscala, hausier and picks for kristaps and m Morris. Re-sign g Williams.
This is it people
Can we all agree that Boston is not trading Derrick White? I know everyone keeps saying Boston wants to move a back court player, but that IS NOT DERRICK WHITE.
He was their 3rd best player and now local hero. No way this guy goes anywhere.
A local hero?! Haha, you do know they lost the serious right?
Yes, but that does not matter to Boston fans. He still gets free Dunkin.
2 of White, Brogdon and Smart for Porzingis seems like a fair deal to me but I am a celtics fan so I will wait for an unbiased opinion.
Lol no. Keep smart at least
Taking on a lot of risk there acquiring the oft-injured Porzingis for two important pieces. I realize they can and should trade away from their guard depth but I’m not giving up multiple of them for that type of player. If it’s 1 of them and picks, that’s a different story.
You’re overvaluing Porzingis by quite a lot.
Dallas once traded the farm ‘cuz they thought Porzingis was the answer for their interior. How’d that work out?
How bout Brogdan and a guy who never took a shot for Boston.
Mine is the best so far
Interesting trade….
Boston going to look something like
Smart Brown Tatum KP Horford/Rob Will
White … … Danilo? Horford/Rob Will
Great deal for LA, Marcus Morris plus whatever draft scraps for Brogdan who will be a solid player for them
Yes — LA could use another load management guy.
KP just had a remarkable season for him in regards to health, and performance, and is an injury away from getting significantly less.
KP should definitely secure a long term deal.
If they work out the salaries, and draft compensation this could be good. For all.
This was the first thing that popped in my head. If I’m KP’s agent, I am pleading with him to not opt in unless Boston promises an extension. If they won’t, you opt out.
If this turns into a 3 team deal I wouldn’t be surprised.
I would think Boston tries to keep their picks. Dealing Brogdon/Smart + Williams/Horford + Pritchard. Wiz keep Pritchards expiring deal at least.
Who that 3rd team is tho idk. Some contender looking for a serviceable guard.
Brad Beal, Kyle Kuzma, Porzingis and Hachimura were the four best players for the Wizards last year. Are they about to lose all four WITHOUT getting a 1st round pick back for any of them????
I was thinking that if they took on Morris in the 3-teamer then they would need some type of compensation for that, and facilitating the sign and trade.
Would have to imagine Porzingis opting in would come with an extension, or else it makes zero sense for him.
Not really. Kp opts out and he may get way less money with new cba and teams getting stingy.
For now, Kp has good money and can get a deal next yr that will just be added to this year boat load of money.
Kp would love boston but I think Kp to the jazz is a better fit and the wiz can get more picks. Now and future picks.
The key will be the jazz as they may prefer rookies now.
I’d trade 16 28 and even the 9 pick for Kp with wizards sending back the 8th
Send over gay and or jones on expiring deals.
Wiz free up 36m in cap…dang!
The draft is good this year so perfect for a rebuild.
KP makes no sense for the Jazz. He isn’t on the same timeline as Kessler. As of right now I think he’s the only player on the Jazz roster that’s untouchable. If the Jazz any trade picks at this point it would be to consolidate and move up in this year’s draft.
“Power of the expiring’s”
I thought the Clips would be pretty active with all those expiring’s, no routes in free agency and a owner like SB
Cant help but chuckle at Isiah Thomas with the Knicks always hiding behind that phrase. Now he was 100% wrong then, and completely bonkers, but 20 years later a sliver of relevancy finally makes it way back to Isiah….kinda ironic he was just the one jockeying for Beal but I guess Beal will too “One day expire”
I would think Gallinari gets bought out. Why even suit up in Washington. He can help with scoring off the bench. He gets released. Nuggets should be all over him.
The Wizard’s GM should be fired. Hes getting nothing for their best players
Beal has one of the worst contracts in the NBA and the previous GM foolishly gave him a no trade clause. The Wiz were never going to get much of value for him especially with Beal being able to choose his destination. Porzingis also has a large contract and he’s injury prone. The Wiz are doing what they should have done sooner and that’s to tank hard for a few seasons and build through the draft with top 5/10 picks.
Previous GM gave Beal a no-trade deal no?
So do all my Knick haters ….. who just love to respond to stuff they don’t even understand. Understand NOW …..
NYC made KP. And he’s trying to live up to us. Ever since he left. He’s still trying ….
Basketball gods have looked out for him though. He makes Boston better. He may finally have found a home.
Lol. Why are NY people so full of themselves? NY didn’t make KP and he wanted nothing to do with your garbage franchise
They are the worst of the worst here. Trust me
Right on CUE ……
So why do you bother to respond. Tool
Alex, how can you be so old and knowledgeable, yet have such poor grammar and punctuation?
Between Rob Williams and Porzingis the Celtics should get a full season combined.
Which is probably all they need.
Would it make sense for Washington to try and group this trade with the Beal trade?
I guess they could make a bigger trade exception if they flip Paul?

Nice trade for Clippers
I dont really get why the Clippers would mess with a roster that fits well together, in my opinion, that maybe you can improve around margins, but if healthy, should be a strong contender, especially if they were to add a guard that could guard, playmake, and shoot like Chris Paul, or Brogdon, but I probably wouldnt have moved Morris, just b/c that is a position they’ve had a need for depth for, at the 4/5. I also think there could be a guy at that spot for them in the draft too, but I guess they’ll give up those pieces to add the guard they want, which admittedly is a really great fit himself
I probably would have kept Porzingis, if I was Washington, so I’m surprised there isnt more than 1 pick in the deal…they did get back pieces though. Coffey would have been in a Chris Paul deal, and Morris gives them the defense, while retaining the spacing, at the 4 where they’re probably losing Kuzma, and. They need another 3 and D wing, and help at the 5
Boston is all of the sudden a pretty scary team if they can add depth while hardcapped. They’re probably losing Grant Williams, and they lose Brogdon, so they need to add wing depth, and they could keep Champagnie at the backup 4…but they could theoretically play lineups with Horford and Porzingis at the 4/5 in certain matchups, which I think would have been even harder for the Heat to deal with than certain lineups already were before (I thought they NV had a lot of different things they could have done this year though)
Like in my post last week, HEAT should’ve tried getting Porzingis ……. would’ve given them the size they badly needed – with rim protection and stretching the floor, to boot.
Not as sexy as getting Dame/Beal. but fills a position of great need …… help lower Bam’s workload.
I agreed. I would have traded for him before either of those guys. Wasnt on the list I mentioned off the top of my head, but for that type of player I was talking about. I also always thought he would be an amazing fit with Bam and Jimmy
That being said that was in the event they were to make some sort of a trade. I also didnt think Washington would move him. They’re also getting more in this deal than the Heat could offer, but mostly from the Clippers
Not a bad idea …… he brings that to Celtics too.
R. Williams and Horford can both play the 4. With Porzingis G. Williams can walk.
Still think Celtics could use a more traditional PG. An ast guy. Schroeder is a FA.
Boston needs a PG!
Lol @ deleting my comment. How weak
