Warriors forward Draymond Green will decline his $27.5MM player option and test the free agent market, tweets Shams Charania of The Athletic. The decision was confirmed by Green’s agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, Charania adds.
“We will continue to talk to Golden State and explore all options,” Paul told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (Twitter link).
The Warriors remain hopeful of signing Green to a new contact, according to Woj, who notes that Green will explore sign-and-trade possibilities as well as opportunities to sign with other teams.
Green, 33, has been Golden State’s fiery leader throughout the past decade, which has included four NBA titles and two additional trips to the Finals. He was the league’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2017 and was named to an All-Defensive team eight times, including this season.
Green’s versatility on offense has also played a role in the Warriors’ dynasty as he has consistently been among the NBA’s best passing big men. He averaged 8.5 points, 7.2 rebounds and 6.8 assists this season while appearing in 73 games.
Green’s time with the Warriors has also featured controversy, with none greater than the punch he threw at Jordan Poole during training camp. That incident was believed to be at least partially motivated by the players’ contract status, with Poole in line for an extension and Green not expected at the time to receive an extension offer.
There has been speculation that Green’s future with the organization might be affected by the loss of general manager Bob Myers, who announced his resignation at the end of May. While the Warriors prefer to keep their championship core intact, Green is now in position to break it up this summer.
Hmm. Over Under on his next contract being more or less than 27.5M total.
UNDER – but he might get several years to make it worth it.
I like the Lakers idea of signing Draymond and Fred VanVleet.
You don’t need to give up any assets, why not?
Other Lakers take a big pay cut with the aim of winning a championship.
With what money? You think Draymond is taking a pay cut to help Lebron get another ring?
Never mind they have a bunch more cap space by not resigning Beasley, Harrison and Mo Bamba!
lakers have too many free agents they could lose. If they did sign Green or anyone else they use up all their capo space so they can’t sign 2 FA.
Sillivan, let me ask you this: which players do you feel need a championship to cement their legacies in that scenario?
When you’re talking huge pay cuts, it’s an important question. VanVleet has a title. Draymond has multiple. LeBron and AD have titles. I don’t know how anxious those guys are going to be to take huge pay cuts for another.
I mean that Reaves and Rui to take pay cuts
My New idea
Mavs get Draymond at $18mm to start
Warriors get Bullock, McGee and #10
warriors don’t want draft picks right now, the window is 2-3 w/ Steph for a 5th chip.
they tried the 2 timeline thing and it didn’t work.
This narrative it didn’t work they one year removed from a title lmao
We are one year removed and every young guy on the team is in trade rumors every other day. No, the two timeline thing didn’t work
Thats why we just fans. Mfers overreact to everything lmfao
Warriors can’t do a sign and trade like that. They’d have to get under the cap.
Green may take a lower salary with more years hit even that seems tough with his comments on his contract. Van fleet for sure isn’t taking a pay cut. Shooting was lakers issue i dont see how a lineup with ad,lebron amd draymond doesn’t have even more spacing issues.
For the Warriors
If Draymond is talking to any other teams or explore any options, I’d let him walk for nothing.
Absolutely
Draymond is not tradable if Warriors give him 3-year $60MM. It means nobody wants him.
Wow…..
What are the Warriors gonna do?
This decision is VERY important for them. Commit to Green and offer a 3-4 year deal?
How would that play out with Klay coming up next?
And the new CBA making things difficult to maintain 3 max players?
Best I see GSW offering Green is a 3/75 contract. Thompson is taking a big pay cut next year to stay with warriors. Poole is probably on the trading block for bench players with contracts that expire at end of next year.
which he should immediately take if offered
Bye Bye Dramond! Maybe?
I wouldn’t offer him a penny over the vet minimum if I’m any team. All he does is talk and hit people. Can’t shoot, can’t dribble, and can’t even make a layup anymore. Decent passer and ok defender at this stage of his career. Only a fool like him would decline a one year 27 million dollar contract. I hope Sabonis’s ribs are doing ok. Next season I think Sabonis is going to go right after Draymond and I can’t wait to see it
hhmm, highest true shooting % of his career last year (.592), 2nd team all defense last year.
do you know ball?
@ThePeople’sElbow I’ve never, and I kid you not, seen him make a layup when I’ve watched a game. I only watch Nets games and a bit of the Finals. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him make a 3 either. Just my observation. He has 3-4 lethal shooters on his team every year, his percentages are misleading. Put him on say the Kings in his “prime” and his percentages would crater
so you don’t know ball. got it.
you do this psychotic rant every time dray comes up – he stole your girl IRL, didnt he? how rent free can one man be. sabonis flopped, draymond barely touched him, hes the most honest player in the league by a long way.
Sabonis is no tough guy. He is a flopper and leg puller. Would be funny if the Kings signed Green and Sabonis had to play next to him.
He out
Just like We believe fans
free rent, huh grizz? it must be frustrating not winning ANYTHING while losing consistently to the dubs….Morant has sure proven to be the face of the franchise,, huh?
Irony would be him signing with Grizzlies to take Brooks place and all the grizzly fans cheer for him.
Long time dubs fan until franchise went wayward
A sign and trade with Detroit is on the table. He wants to finish up at home.
I’m so glad you know what he wants. share his thoughts with the rest of the class please!
perfect idea
Draymond is a perfect leader for a young team like Pistons
Warriors get #5
Pistons get Draymond and #19
Then Warriors trade #5 and Poole for a star
why is Draymond going to Detroit to win 18-24 regular season games?
Money.
The Pistons wouldn’t need to do a sign-and-trade. They have enough cap space to sign him outright. Zero chance they trade the #5 pick for Draymond. That said, there seems to be a lot of chatter about him wanting to come home. He could probably get 3/$75 out of the stones.
I think he re-signs with GS but this is the second most likely outcome
I’m so glad you know what he wants. share his thoughts with the rest of the class please!
Seems a risky move unless something else is going on behind the scenes…announcement soon?
At least Draymond didnt wait til last day to make his decision….. it will be interesting to see what Joe and Kirk decide to do if anything before the draft. Another big offseason matter is Kerr’s contract. Draymond wants 4 yr contract no matter what and he will get it.
who is offering him 4 years? you do realize teams can not go over the cap to sign FAs?
which of the 6 teams with cap space are offering him 4 years?
Never heard him claim 4 years. last time he spoke he doesn’t see himself playing more than another 3 years.
True but timing matters.
The order in which players transact also determines how they can do things .
I think it is only worth to sign Green for 22 million to 25 million a year for 3-4 years . He gave a lot to the organization but it is important to trade Jordan P if they sign Green both can’t exist together and that hurts the warrior team chemistry.
you know the team chemistry?
Well, if Kerr himself was concerned about it as has been reported, then by extension so do we.
He’s retiring a 1-teamer. Like how all honest players do.
GSW Recieved Morris, Gordon, Amir Coffey
Clippers Recieved Draymond Green (via sign and trade)
Warriors want Batum not old man Gordan.
Giving up a 1yr / $27.5M for a 3yr / $30M is not smart.
You seem to think you know the details of conversations Draymond’s agent has had with other teams. I think you don’t.
MacaDoo 757!
It will be interesting to see who makes him an offer other than GSW? The Mavs may be desperate enough. To me he not with more than Grant Williams.
grant williams wishes he was worth half DG’s value. ha
We shall see what Grant gets! Draymond won’t beat by much.
Mavs need to focus on requiring a reliable center first. Everything else (aside from Kyrie) is secondary.
Michigan hs state champ
NCAA champ
Nba champ x4
and kid rock….dont forget
Draymond himself has repeatedly stated over the last 10 years that he wants to finish his career in golden state and if that can’t happen or doesn’t happen, he wants to play for his hometown team, the pistons.
Bob out
Dray out
Warriors culture sunk
He opted out to get more years — I think he will resign with warriors but for 3 or 4 years at a lower year by year cost.
The GS FO is breathing a huge sigh of relief.
Dra will resign for more yrs at a decent price.
I think Pistons should try and sign him. He can mentor that young team. And get his hometown crazy about the Pistons again. He can make an impact there.
