After a tumultuous 2022/23 season saw the Hawks fire their head coach for the second time in three seasons, there was a rumor they might consider trading Trae Young, who reportedly had issues with both Lloyd Pierce and Nate McMillan.
However, Young expressed confidence in new head coach Quin Snyder after the 2022/23 season ended, and league sources tell Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports the Hawks are “open to conversations” on anyone on their roster except for their point guard, implying they plan to continue building around the two-time All-Star.
That said, Fischer cautions Atlanta isn’t actively looking to move certain players, particularly Dejounte Murray. Sources tell Fischer the Hawks highly value Murray, whom the team acquired last offseason from San Antonio. Atlanta’s front office is apparently using some sort of tiered ranking system for the roster, and the 26-year-old stands on his own just below Young, according to Fischer.
Fischer previously reported that the Hawks discussed a framework of a trade that would have sent John Collins and the No. 15 pick in next week’s draft to the Mavericks in exchange for Davis Bertans and No. 10. It sounds as though Dallas balked at that proposal, so there wasn’t much progress in the talks, but Fischer hears from sources who say the Mavs might be open to a deal if Clint Capela was the incoming player instead of Collins.
Onyeka Okongwu is the Hawks player most rival teams have expressed interest in, according to Fischer, with Capela, Collins and De’Andre Hunter also viewed as trade candidates. However, Capela has good chemistry with Young, and the Hawks value Hunter, having signed him to a lucrative rookie scale extension before ’22/23 started, Fischer notes.
The Hawks are expected to keep Saddiq Bey, whom the team acquired for five second-round picks at the February trade deadline, Fischer adds. Like Okongwu, Bey will be eligible for a rookie scale extension extension this summer.
Sources tell Fischer that Atlanta is thought to be high on Raptors forward Pascal Siakam, who has one year left on his contract. Siakam will be extension-eligible this summer, but the two-time All-NBA member could choose to hold off on that decision, as he’ll be eligible for a super-max extension with Toronto in 2024 if he makes another All-NBA team in ’23/24 (he missed out on the honor this past season).
“Hawks open to conversations on anyone but Dejonte Murray.”
Fixed it.
“Hawks open to conversations on anyone”
Now it’s fixed
Murray is worth keeping. Solid on both ends of the floor.
Sorta wish they stopped that statement at the word “anyone” tbh. Trae, Jalen, AJ, Clint & Onyeka should all be basically safe but I don’t mind them seeing them make big moves involving key guys like Bogdan, Dre, John & even Dejounte tbh. ESPECIALLY if a guy like Zion becomes available
I hear it as they’re “open to conversations on anyone, and promise not to waste anyone’s time bringing up TY”. I think a message like that will help get talks going.
Atlanta are an average basketball that wants to be a good team. They had a good run and showed good signs but have since regressed.
It’s all abit of a shambles.
Open to conversations on anyone but Trae but also don’t really want to trade Murray.
Really want to trade Collins but no one wants him.
The Trae and Dejounte duo didn’t work and I don’t see it getting any better with Bertans or a young prospect.
I can see this team turning into the irrelevant Washington Wizards real quick if they don’t just grow a pair and do something bold.
Trae for KAT I think makes the most sense.
Atl has 2 PGs and Minny has 2 centres both experiments didn’t work.
Dallas has interest in Capela, sweet send him there for THJ and swap the picks, if you need to sweeten the deal then throw in a second round pick too.
Then I like my proposal from the Grant Williams story. GW for JC basically…
ATL
Murray THJ Hunter Williams KAT
Bogdanovic Bey Johnson McGee
ATL become this really cool, run and gun 3 point shooting team. Murray has that dog in him, THJ is a shooter and iso scorer, Hunter and Williams are both 3 and D forwards and KAT is your go to guy.
Defensively you have Murray Hunter and Williams but probably struggle at this end of the floor.
Would make for a good watch and atleast shows effort
Boston won’t even be able to bring back Williams as is let alone take on another 25 mill to that payroll with a Colllins trade
They got Tatum and Brown coming up on supermax and are already straddling the supertax (179) line as is w/out Williams getting a dime
Welcome to the new CBA
Brown hasn’t been extended yet and Horford is taking a huge pay cut. So there should be some money there
There is zero money there
They are 5 mill away from the supertax currently/already w/out Williams
One season and it didn’t work? They did make the playoffs. They have new head coach with a new system. Kind of early in the process to say it didn’t work isn’t it?
They have a new coach every second season cause it hasn’t been working. They’ve had one good season
I can almost guarantee John Collins isn’t traded. We’ve heard these rumors for 4-5 straight years and he’s still here. I doubt they sell when his value is at an all time low. Dre and CC are the likeliest to move IMO. You’re about to have to be O a lot of money to be a backup.
Collins’ trade value isn’t getting any better. He’s regressed every season since the PED suspension.
Never pay B or C level players max money. It’s the fastest way to paralyze your franchise.
Hawks suck ….. going backwards.
They beat Miami in a one game series in the playoffs. Nobody else in the Eastern conference did that…
Wow when’s the parade ……..
Parade of trades …. Hawks are done.
Hawks need to find a team dumb enough to trade for Trae…
Or just be happy being mediocre until he retires…
Im not buying it. Trae’s market is likely depressed and as such Atlanta needs to drum up some leverage. Teams, and people, always tend to want what they (perceive) they can’t have.
Capela and Murray for Ayton
Suns would do that in a blink of an eye. Too bad the Hawks wouldn’t.
Weinright and a 2nd too?
Three years ago the old owner spent alot of money instead of building and messed it up. I think it opens minutes to griffin, Bogdon, bey and OOb to PF. I would rather have Ayton than capela. Sign a back PG defensive like Beverley. Starting lineup is around the same age. Draft a SF lewis and a PF
And it gets heat off Trae
Then offer Hunter and OO for a all star SF if Hunter isn’t a top notch SF. seems injured alot
Barrett at SG*
Please will a NBA team sign me. I can scout
