It’s easy to understand from a financial perspective why trading John Collins to Utah in a salary-dump deal is the right move for the Hawks, who no longer project to be a taxpayer in 2023/24, writes Jeff Schultz of The Athletic. Still, Schultz views the move as an embarrassing culmination of three years of trade rumors, which began even before Collins signed a five-year, $125MM contract with the team in 2021.
Certainly, if the Hawks had moved Collins a year or two earlier, they could’ve brought back more value from an on-court perspective. As Shams Charania of The Athletic writes, Atlanta had an opportunity to acquire Harrison Barnes from the Kings in a Collins deal last June, but decided against it. The Hawks will instead acquire Rudy Gay and a second-round pick from the Jazz.
Collins’ exit will give young players like Jalen Johnson and AJ Griffin the opportunity to play larger roles going forward, according to Schultz, who adds that the Hawks will continue to explore the trade market. Although Clint Capela and De’Andre Hunter are viewed as possible candidates to be dealt, don’t expect Dejounte Murray to go anywhere. Schultz says a number of teams have inquired on Murray, but GM Landry Fields and head coach Quin Snyder are both fans of the veteran guard.
Here’s more on the Collins trade:
- Gay is unlikely to actually suit up for the Hawks next season, per Lauren Williams of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (subscription required). People familiar with the situation tell Williams that the team is expected to try to trade Gay. If no favorable deals emerge, he’ll likely be waived.
- There’s no shame in admitting that the Collins trade is a salary dump, says ESPN’s Bobby Marks (YouTube link), pointing out that the move will give the Hawks flexibility for future deals with players like Saddiq Bey and Onyeka Okongwu.
- Tony Jones of The Athletic takes a look at what Collins will bring to the Jazz and how adding him to the mix will affect the rest of the roster. Based on the current make-up of the frontcourt, it appears that Collins, Lauri Markkanen, Walker Kessler, and Kelly Olynyk will have major roles, with others – including Taylor Hendricks – vying for playing time, says Jones.
- The Jazz‘s acquisition of Collins signals that the front office is willing to accelerate the team’s rebuilding process rather than simply continuing to stockpile draft picks and build through the draft, writes Gordon Monson of The Salt Lake Tribune (subscription required).
- Zach Harper of The Athletic is far more bullish on the Jazz‘s side of the Collins deal, giving Utah a grade of A for the move while assigning the Hawks an “F-plus.”
Which young forward duo would you rather have on your team for the next 5yrs, 2005 Boris Diaw/Al Harrington, 2023 Jalen Johnson/AJ Griffin, 2018 John Collins/Taurean Prince, 1995 Stacey Augmon/Grant Long or 2007 Josh Childress/Josh Smith? Rank a top3 if possible… link to m.youtube.com
Which Hawk player will be traded next or dumped …….
Capela, Young, Hunter, Bogdanovic, Okongwu ………. we all want to know
Answer mine & I’ll answer yours
All a bunch of 2nd and 3rd tier players. There’s a reason the hawks haven’t won anything
Not really interested lol. Just being funny
You’re not funny though
I’d take the Boris combo first, he was so underrated till he became kinda overated if that makes sense
Prolly augmon combo 2 nd
Collins combo 3rd
Tight margins tho , love the Questions btw
Got one for you Sank
How much does prime Stacey augmon net today in. Unrestricted Free agency ? I”m scared to even ( try to ) project… he’d be fascinating today tho in todays game
Trae Young and Dejounte Murray are not a fit together in the backcourt. Team just got worse defensively, and still has a woeful lack of shooting.
Luka Samanic gonna be looking for a job again unless Olynyk gets traded.
Samanic is a solid player. I know the Jazz were rumored to have looked for offers for Olynyk at the trade deadline. Olynyk just turned 32. So he’s still in his later prime years. I could see the Jazz keeping him for their playoff run or trading him and Clarkson (SnT) for a salary dump premier guard.
Spurs should give him another chance
Nobody is talking about how this trade ruined the generational duo of Rudy Gay and Collin Sexton – Gay-Sex will no longer be shown to the fans in Utah and Im very upset.
Don’t worry, Gay-Sex is still being championed and shown to fans in America (LOL)
Picking up Collins isn’t going to stop the draft pick stockpiling. The Jazz are picking up Collins the same way okc did Chris Paul and they’re gonna trade him for at least 1 1st round pick next offseason after a bounce back season.
If he plays well why wouldn’t Utah just keep him?
They already have 2 better building blocks in Kessler and markennan. And Utah is in okc rebuild mode just getting endless picks
Let’s agree to disagree
I don’t think they are this year. They would have to be really bad to keep this year’s pick. They don’t project to be that bad. Therefore, they’re going to push for the playoffs. Next year, however, they could trade everyone again. It’s anyone’s guess. Lol
They’re going to play all three bigs together. Olynyk and Hendricks will back them up. Many think they’ll still trade Olynyk.
The only questions are the guards. THT and Clarkson both haven’t opted in yet. I’m guessing once that’s answered then the Jazz will make more moves. It’ll depend on how much cap space they have and what players other teams have interest in, like any team. They could still pull off huge trades.
Utah is no longer hunting for 1st round picks. They already have more than they can hope to actually use.
1st round picks are trade bait for if/when they finally try and win. Picks are how Phoenix got kd and Beal. Utah has to find a booker and ayton level talent in the draft and then trade its picks for players to win with them. Plus with the fixed lottery, picks are worthless if you suck and still can’t get a top 5 pick
1st round picks actually had nothing to do with the Beal trade…. and the KD trade was more about Nets getting 2 excellent wings with team control (as you remember the Nets refused to take the deal with Bridges)
A better comp would have been the Rudy trade that gave Utah all of those picks. And in a year that just saw the 41st pick of a draft win Finals MVP, not sure how you figure anything than a top 5 pick is worthless
It was a ship full of 2nd rounders still and I was more referencing the pistons falling to 5 with the worst record about lottery being fixed
I’m interested on hearing why you think the lottery is fixed. Because you can’t see the ping pong balls?
After lebron left Cleveland got rewarded 3 out of 4 1st overall picks and San Antonio has gotten 3 generational talented big men 1st overall. I absolutely despise baseball for copying the lottery and fixing drafts.
the pick with the best % is the team with worst record getting the 5th pick at 50%. pick 1-4 more unlikely. best to finish with the second or maybe 3rd worst record, whereas the % are distributed more evenly. 2 20% picks with 2nd worst(1-5,picks 4&5) and only 1 20% pick with 3rd worst(1-6,pick 6).
Just putting the draft in reverse order has always worked for football and did for years for baseball until they didn’t like being a distant 3rd favorite sport in its own home country
Right but then you get teams like Philly who didn’t hide their goal of being terrible for years to restart the organization. Thats bad for basketball, hence why the odds were adjusted.
I promise you the lottery isn’t rigged and those trails in the sky aren’t chemicals designed to castrate youths.
Philly missed on every top pick except embiid tho. Plus some teams are just awful forever no matter if they get a top pick or not, look at Charlotte. I’m not that extreme of a conspiracy theorist but I do think lotteries as a whole are fixed. I never have or will buy a lottery ticket anywhere.
Utah would like 2024 picks
They tried to get firsts for every player sent out at the trade deadline. So yes, they still want more firsts.
Keep in mind, they got lots of offers for their 3 picks this year. They just decided they liked the players that were falling to them better.
This trade is pretty Gay from a Hawks point of view
Markkanen has already proven himself.
Collins has a chance to do the same. Even as the backup big. He should get 28-30 mins. They might work well together. Two castoffs. And if he plays well. They can always move him. It’s a good deal for Jazz.
Fix the mute button feature please. I’m tired of reading Sankara and his burner accounts on my Hawks news feeds.
