Although new Wizards president Michael Winger has publicly said he’s still undecided on whether or not he’s going to reshape the roster this offseason and recent reports have echoed that same sentiment, rival teams believe it’s practically a foregone conclusion that Bradley Beal will eventually be traded, Marc Stein writes in his latest Substack article.
The primary obstacle in a potential deal is Beal’s full no-trade clause — he’s the only active player in the league with that provision in his contract. Not only would Beal have to approve a trade, but the no-trade clause — and the nearly $208MM he’s owed over the next four seasons — would carry over to his new team as well, which complicates matters for both the Wizards and any interested suitors. He has also been limited by injuries the past two seasons, appearing in 90 of a possible 164 games.
Both Stein and Fred Katz of The Athletic have heard that the Heat would be at the top of Beal’s list of preferred landing spots. Stein says Miami is “widely regarded” as the frontrunner to acquire the three-time All-Star.
Sources tell Katz that the Warriors and Knicks, to varying degrees, are teams that have been interested Beal in the past. According to Katz, the Knicks have made it known they would reciprocate that interest if Beal were made available.
The Kings have discussed a Beal trade with the Wizards, and he’s believed to be open to joining Sacramento, sources tell Shams Charania and Sam Amick of The Athletic (Twitter link). However, as of now, nothing seems imminent on that front.
Here’s more on the Wizards and Beal:
- The Wizards are believed to be prioritizing financial relief and draft capital in a return package for Beal, according to Stein, but that doesn’t mean that will come to fruition. As Stein observes, since Beal can reject any trade proposal, he has a significant amount of power to impact the terms of a deal.
- Washington’s previous front office regime unsuccessfully tried to reacquire the 2024 protected first-round pick it owes New York, sources tell Katz. That pick would hold more value to the Wizards in the event of a rebuild, Katz observes, which may work to the Knicks’ advantage if they pursue Beal.
- Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports confirms previous reports that the Celtics and Sixers do not plan to pursue Beal, despite being linked to the veteran guard in the past. The Sixers also aren’t expected to go after Fred VanVleet if James Harden walks in free agency, Fischer adds.
- In what figures to be an eventual offseason for the Wizards, both Stein and Fischer have heard that big man Kristaps Porzingis is still contemplating whether or not to exercise his $36MM player option for 2023/24. The 27-year-old would become an unrestricted free agent if he doesn’t pick up the option, with his decision deadline set for June 21.
I think Milwaukee, OKC, Orlando make a lot of sense, if he gets moved. Milwaukee just feels like what would happen
This inept franchise the Washington Capitals is clueless. They gave Hachimura away and they will do the same thing with Beal.
When is the last time they won everything?
Ding, ding, ding, if you said 1978 you are right. That’s only 45 years, not bad.
Clueless? There’s never been an NBA team called the Washington Capitals. They’ve been called The Capital Bullets, The Washington Bullets and the are now know as the Washington Wizards.
If you’re talking about he NHL team The Washington Capitals, they recently won the Stanley cup in 2018. Five years ago isn’t that long.
Rui is NOT good, loll. They got a HAUL for him. The mistake was drafting Rui so high in the first place.
Washington Capitols were a former Basketball Association of America team based in Washington, D.C. from 1946 to 1951. The team was coached from 1946 to 1949 by NBA Hall of Famer Red Auerbach.
Beal is not going coming to MKE. He sure as heck isn’t getting swapped for Middleton, which is the only salary matching possible swap. The Bucks front office is not dumb enough to unload 2-3 young players for injury prone max. They’re already in max tax turf.
If you are thinking it’s Middleton, well their stats are almost a mirror image of one another. Beal has a better defensive rating and that’s about the only standout stat and even that’s marginal.
Curious, who do you think is getting swapped?
Some combination of Holiday, Grayson Allen, and Connaughton, plus. I dont think Middleton would be gone in that scenario. Not saying its smart, by the way. Just something I could see happening
They gave up 3x first round picks for Jrue. The 2025 and 2027 are unprotected. Considering that, I wouldn’t count on them dealing Jrue for ann injury prone shooting/point.
Connaughton, Allen and the bench mob would have to go, but the Bucks cannot support another max contract. Even if they could, they’d have to take a bunch of vet mins to fill out the bench and that’s gunna be very hard to do.
Portis and Lopez… those two I could see being moved, but Lopez is already an UFA, so that calls for a sign and trade.
All signs point to Bucks not being interested.
You would also get Monte Morris back in the scenario I mentioned. Probably let Lopez go, and try to retain crowder and ingles, and. Add depth from there
Beal, Matthews, Middleton, Crowder, Giannis
Portis, Ingles, Morris, Beauchamp
A pretty decent foundation for how that would look. Again, not saying it’s great asset management, but I could see it happening more than dismissing it
“Latest On Wizards”
They still stink,
Nobody is paying KP 36 million. So he better pick that contract up. Last big payday he will ever see. He will be 28 in August.
Miami is a good place for Beal. Just don’t know if they can pull it off.
Sacramento is also a good place for him.
I like him on Knicks. If it’s a fair deal. We don’t want to overpay for Beal. That Washington pick will be a high pick if they go full rebuild. So I can see the Knicks in this. They want money relief we got that too.
Fournier, Mitch, Grimes, Obi1, plus two (#1) picks. Give them back their 2024 pick.
Brad Beal from behind the 3-point line the past five years. Zach LaVine is a better Knick option.
36.9%
30%
34.9%
35.3%
35.1%
And he still would be the first or second best player on the Knicks. Stop with the metrics he is a walking bucket.
Metrics??? Why would you pay $50 million a year, to an undersized Shooting Guard, who has struggled to make 3’s the past 5 years despite being a volume shooter and playing no defense while not even being able to get his team into the playoffs. And you think this “walking bucket” solves the Knicks need to add three-point shooting?
Take a look at Luka and Kyrie’s three-point shooting percentages, and you will see why Dallas was an absolute disaster with them together. No defense and volume three-point shooters knocking down under 35% from the 3.
The NBA greatly values three-point shooting.
Beal is a better scorer. Do t be fooled by the last two yrs. I still like DeR more. But at a fair price. I’ll take Beal. He is younger than DeR. He’ll get better looks on Knicks. And the team will get better looks. Cause of the attention Beal will get. I’m sure Beal at 30 is ready for real Prime Time at MSG.
Sacramento and Miami are very good options too. This is what I mean. I do not want to get in a bidding war. We do t need to overpay.
Brad Beal is no longer a better scorer than Zach LaVine.
Tobias Harris makes nearly $40 million this season. Some team will definitely pay KP north of $35 million per season, were he to appear on the open market.
Teams aren’t paying like they use to now. They have seen too many contracts backfire. Tobias is on his last yr. Terrible comparison. KP is soft and plays no D. He’s not worth big money. Who is willing to fill their cap space or has cap space to pay him more than 36 mill. He’s not going anywhere. He’s taking that last yr.
He’s opting out. Even if he doesn’t get 36+, the long term deal will be worth more. Considering his injury history, the long term bag is def worth more than one season at a higher value
I like him.in the Knicks. I Even think that package can be lowered, replacing, Say, Mitch Or Obi, with Grimes or Quickley.
I would keep one of them. Preferably Obi.
If we trade Mitch, we need to replace him.with a mid-end starting level rim.protector
Hasn’t played more than 60 games in the past 4 seasons, he’s on the verge of being washed.
Oh please Warriors have no money to give Beal. Looking at how much in the future he gets that would mean its him and Curry with a bunch of low wage players. New CBA makes it almost impossible to pick up any players.
Also the Warriors were only into Beal because Jordan Poole was in the G League and bad. That last part changed significantly.
He’s no longer in the G league, but still bad…
Poole can be used as salary matching for Beal now. They also have younger prospects like Moody.
Beal makes $18 million more so you would need to throw in Payton and Looney to come close. That is why it would never work
Miami seems to have the most interest and the least to lose by acquiring Beal. They proved they can win without Tyler Herro and have the likes of Duncan Robinson or Kyle Lowery to add/dump to match Beal’s money.
Beal would also be able to slot into the third option role behind Jimmy and Bam. More of a compliment than a lead option.
Yeah, the Warriors had interest in Beal, but that was before Jordan Poole existed? Weird team to flag out there.
Any Zach LaVine interest???
Some Beal possibilities IMO:
Warriors for Poole/Moody/picks
Heat for Herro, Robinson, Jovic, and picks
Knicks for picks + IQ, Obi, Barrett/Randle
Nuggets for MPJ
Blazers for Simons, Nurkic, Sharpe, and the 23rd pick in this year’s draft.
Sixers for Tobias, Maxey, and picks.
Notice how Knicks have to give up more …..
It’s like y’all are programmed…. It’s hilarious
Bro your players suck LOL. Naturally you have to give up more loll
No team has more to offer than Knicks. So stop with all the dream watching. It’s clear Wizards are trying to drive the price up. Why do you think this out now.
Beal has a no trade clause. That’s why Miami and Sacramento make sense. He’s not going anywhere else. All three teams have assets to do it. And all three are contenders with Beal. It’s that simple …….
So again …. No overpaying for Beal.
I just go for DeR …… we contend for 2-3 yrs with him. Or we can even add a player. Since he will be cheaper ……
Knicks can easily add DeRozan if the Bulls rebuild. More than enough draft assets and young talent to easily add a player on an expiring deal.
It looks like it’s going to be an awesome off-season
Bulls are i’m a great position this offseason to rebuild and stockpile heavy draft assets and/or young prospectos with potencial.
DeRozan on an expiring should net something interesting, plus, I would definitely trade LaVine, as he has the biggest trade value of the whole team, value which seems to be high.
With some maneuvering from the FO, they could Even get Scoot.
I read a trade proposal, in which LaVine goes to.Portland for Simons, Sharpe and the 3rd pivk. If I’m the Bulls FO, I’m signing that asap (No offense to Zach)
Is a very interesting idea trading LaVine for all of what you said. And trading DeRozan either now or at the trade deadline. And not signing Vucevic. Bulls would have lots of young athletic talent, draft picks and cap space. Personally, I think LaVine is an amazing player. LaVine is unstoppable if put in open court situations. LaVine gets a bad rap because he hasn’t been on a team yet that has come close to a title. Not all LaVine’s fault. Would not be an easy decision to trade LaVine.
Thanks for the appreciation, bro. Zach has real talent, he needs to keep growing and maturing
Welcome. IMO would not be wrong for the Bulls to just sign Vucevic again and ‘run it back’. Try to improve from within. In the play-in game with the Heat, the Bulls were ahead by 3 points with 3:00 minutes to go, just didn’t finish well obviously.
Kings would be a good fit for Beal, I am just not sure if breaking up the Kings a bit to get him is a good idea
