9:35am: The Warriors have made Dunleavy’s promotion official, issuing a press release to announce the move.
“We think Mike is the perfect fit to lead our basketball operations department,” Joe Lacob said in a statement. “He has a wealth of basketball knowledge, stemming from his family upbringing, a 15-year NBA playing career and five seasons serving under Bob Myers in our front office. He’s young and energetic, has established numerous relationships around the league and communicates well with players and coaches—all important traits in this business. Mike’s ready for this challenge and responsibility.”
8:12am: Warriors executive Mike Dunleavy Jr. has reached an agreement to become the team’s new general manager, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Dunleavy’s previous title had been vice president of basketball operations, but he’ll receive a promotion following Bob Myers‘ exit from Golden State. Myers had been the Warriors’ longtime GM and president of basketball operations.
Dunleavy, who was close with Myers and has been one of the top lieutenants in the Warriors’ front office in recent years, was repeatedly identified by reporters as the frontrunner to become the club’s new head of basketball operations if the job opened up.
Following Myers’ departure, team owner Joe Lacob told reporters that he wasn’t yet ready to name a replacement, but his talks with Dunleavy’s agents at Excel Sports Management concluded on Thursday with a new long-term deal for the former NBA forward, sources tell ESPN.
The son of former NBA player and coach Mike Dunleavy Sr., Dunleavy Jr. won a national championship at Duke in 2001 and was drafted third overall in 2002 by the Warriors. He played in nearly 1,000 regular season games from 2002-17 for six teams before transitioning into a non-playing role with his original NBA club.
Originally hired by Golden State as a scout in 2018, Dunleavy was promoted to assistant GM in 2019 and was further elevated to VP of basketball operations in 2021.
Although it’s not clear whether he’ll also receive a formal promotion, Joe Lacob’s son Kirk Lacob is also expected to take on a larger decision-making role for the Warriors going forward, Wojnarowski writes. Kirk’s current title is executive VP of basketball operations.
fresh perspective on things. looking forward to it
Fresh perspective will do nothing drastic the first 2 years. The Warriors will get old and fade away as a result of this very bad decision.
yea…im sure thats the first impression Dunleavy wants to leave. good call!
Didn’t see that coming. Resign Green, Moody(maybe, no if trade), Lamb and Iggy. Trade poole, Kuminga, Rollins and picks(their youth) for a all star type Center around the same age as Wiggins or Curry and Thompson. Hopefully people want to sign there for miminiun deals. Go for a championship. Get excited back. Easy fix. Draft youth in the future when it’s done. Then do a Spurs style move this year
What? Iggy retired. Why trade half your roster for Center. You really want a team filled with guys that belong in the G-League? It will make last season’s problems look quaint. The only upside is that they will have the 1st pick in next year’s draft. Oh wait, you traded away that pick. Never mind.
I didn’t see that Iggy retired. Thank you . I’m sure you can also get back a SG along with a center. I’m sure players will sign there for cheap in chance of getting a ring . Your bench is Payton, looney , dont idk and Lamb. How about capela, kristaps, miles Turner, N Vuch, towns or Adams?
Umm…Iggy announced that last season that it was his last a year ago. The Warriors don’t have the assets to acquire any of the Centers you mentioned. You would have to throw in Poole. But, no team is going to want him without a 1st attached. And how are you going to get a SG included. You’ll have no roster left.
I don’t keep up with it to much anymore. I know every player ever though
They can keep Moody, Baldwin and Rollins . Then keep the picks and draft a young center and PF. Look at PGs too. Their all kinds of undrafted players. I can name a lot if you want.
They only have one pick this draft. Lively will probably be gone by the time they pick. Clooney or Trayce Jackson look good.
I agree completely with these two players for them
I mean lively. I thought you meant Jackson-Davis. What about GG Jackson? I like Davis from Detroit mercy
Clooney. Is he decent? There is a good division 2 center out there but nobody gives them a chance
I don’t see a brand new rookie GM making big moves like this. I’m afraid it’ll be status quo going into next season with just a few tweaks. Mike Dunleavy Junior was Vanilla as a player and screwed the Warriors and now he’ll be vanilla and boring as a GM and screw the Warriors again. They’ll get old and won’t make the Right Moves to refill the coffers.
The result will be Daddy making the decisions who doesn’t have a basketball background, and things will turn out even worse than expected.
I appreciate you responding back to me
I love this move. When he was at Duke, I had a change to met him at charity event. Was a really down to earth guy. He actually didn’t even like talking basketball. A few months later he was a top 5 pick.
Not enough training not enough experience and just ushered right in to a top position with one of the leaks top franchises way too quickly. This won’t end well.
Eemember Chris Mullen as GM? Screwed the Warriors for years. Very bad drafting very bad trades, Don Nelson had to come in and fix it all.
Playing Webber at center that year was a bad idea. All they needed that year was a center. I can show you their page with all their stats. So close
Dunleavy has been an Assistant GM with the Warriors for 4 years now. Myers had about 6 months experience when he became GM.
How about capela, kristaps, miles Turner, N Vuch, towns or Adams? For poole and Kuminga?
Why trade your best young player?
Kristaps, Turner or Adams plus a player for Poole and Kuminga. Draft well and sign good Free agents
The move that should happen. I would have been worried if it was the owners son because he needs experience.
(this is long, sorry)
Dream move: Fire (or trade maybe? If thats possible?) Kerr. He’s proven over and over he can’t coach his way out of a paper bag in the game, he sticks to his plans too long, and puts awful rotatations out there and thinks Lamb is better than Kuminga (insane).
Must-do moves: Remove Lamb from the conversation, he’s a horrific defender and Kerr’s gameplan requires everyone to be closer to Gary Payton II’s defense for them to win it all, so Lamb and Poole got particularly exposed this year on that. Poole needed to go off this year, but he had a championship hangover season. He still improved his PPG as hes done every year but needed to work on his defense more and didn’t. Thats not worth selling over, in my opinion. He likely will be more hungry this year after hearing the criticism. I’d hold onto him for at least one more year.
Speaking of exposed, once Donte DiVincenzo went into “Kerr’s fave players” group, he almost instantly fell off a cliff and played like garbage when needed most. Too many minutes to DiVincenzo, Lamb and Jerome this year. Iggy should have gotten all those 2-way minutes but these aren’t players that need to stick around. They aren’t winners, they don’t play defense at a championship level, and all three are bad-to-mid overall. GSW can do better in replacing those three and Iguodala.
Klay lost a step and had slumps but he’s still rehabbing from both legs exploding, its wild he does anything out there but he’s still an elite all-star at his best and the GOAT shooter who isn’t named Curry. I think they will keep the core together, with the only big trade being Wiggins and picks for Lebron. Do I personally want that to happen as a fan? Meh, I’d rather win another title before Lebron joins, just so we can say Steph has more rings than Bron. But also, I can see the writing on the wall – GSW has the cleanest way of obtaining both Lebron and Bronny out of any NBA team, and if Lebron says he wants to play with his son, then thats what will happen, and GSW appears to be the only team who can easily accommodate them both.
I hope they draft the most NBA-ready player available, I just don’t want to have to endure watching horrible 2-way players waste minutes on my championship-caliber team anymore and I hate Kerr forever for making that happen. We should have won it all this year, its all on Kerr why we didn’t. You don’t bench Kuminga vs the Lakers when you need big body good defenders. Instead Kerr, obsessed with his 3-guard rotations, put DiVincenzo in and they lost almost strictly due to that single, awful, idiotic move. I pray Kerr is gone soon.
Strange. Between Dray, Klay, Steph, Dell, and Mychal, you have 70 years of NBA experience and 11 rings. But, not one complaint about Kerr’s coaching. Steph, the 2nd greatest player in franchise history, could have Kerr fired with just a phone call. Why hasn’t he done that? Maybe because he knows that Kerr is a great coach.
I have no problem with anything you typed except “Steph, the 2nd greatest player in franchise history.” Only other one close is Chamberlain but he only spent 5 and half seasons there.
Their both all time greats and changed the game forever but only Steph has won four rings and will most likely spend his entire career with the Warriors.
That’s true that Wilt didn’t spend his whole career with the Warriors. And, they didn’t win a ring when they had him a Nate in the front court. But, Wilt was a much better defensive player and rebounder. Until you see the guys play against each other, it is difficult to rank them. I just wanted to annoy someone. Guess who.
That’s as good as reason as any I guess. I’ve annoyed A’sfanrERires8monTydropinKEntucky so much he’s blocked me.
What’s stranger is why you would think the team that boasts about their “culture” would suddenly start yapping to the press about the HC? Even in your hypothetical you are wrong, because behind the scenes there are many complaints about him. KD blamed Kerr for him leaving. If Kerr was good at his job, GSW would have another title right now.
Name another team Kerr has coached? You aren’t basing this off anything. Show me a non-Curry team Kerr has coached to a winning record. I’ll wait.
The Warriors won rings before and after KD. The Nets pretty much imploded when KD went there. Teams don’t win rings with bad HCs.
“Teams don’t win rings with bad HCs.” weird seeing how we live in a world where many HC who won rings got fired soon after. Coach Bud says hi.
KD wasnt the reason why the Nets imploded. He shouldnt even have gone there to begin with, he should have stayed with GSW and would have if they moved on from Kerr, which they should do.
Do you even really care? It seems you know my stance on Kerr and are singling me out to argue with me with no basis behind what youre saying. Kerr has been gifted Curry and is useless otherwise, this is fact and reflects in his W-L. You have no argument here.
Teams that win rings usually do have great players. To say that the Warriors should have won more rings is just pure fantasy. It is not based on any objective fact. It is difficult to win one ring. To win 4 with the same group of players requires some great coaching.
Coach Bud? Name all the HC that have been fired after winning multiple rings.
Multiple rings? That wasnt in your original post! Changing the goalposts is the only way you can win. Yawn. Kerr sucks and its easy to destroy anyone who defends him.
Phoenix Suns GM Kerr is the only time he was on his own, and look at the results = mid to bad. That is who he is at his core.
Kerr did absolutely nothing to earn those rings and did all he could to make the team lose. You are obviously trolling me here, grow up man. Warriors over everyone.
“weird seeing how we live in a world where many HC who won rings got fired soon after.”
Getting fired doesn’t make someone a bad coach.
