Having traded away so many first-round picks a year ago to acquire Rudy Gobert, the Timberwolves know they have to get “creative” if they hope to add young talent to their roster, president of basketball operations Tim Connelly told reporters during his post-draft press conference, per Chris Hine of The Star Tribune. Minnesota entered Thursday night with a single second-round pick and acquired a second one that was used to draft Leonard Miller.
“We’re out a bunch of first-round picks, so we’re probably a bit more aggressive trying to find guys that are maybe a year early, or guys that have slipped for an injury, for example, like (No. 53 pick) Jaylen (Clark),” Connelly said. “I don’t think we can just follow too many trends. We’ve got to be creative and kind of cross our fingers.”
Clark, who injured his Achilles earlier this year and underwent surgery after the season, isn’t expected to be ready for the start of his rookie year. However, the Wolves are optimistic about what he’ll be able to bring to the team once he’s healthy, with Connelly referring to him as “the best perimeter defender in the draft,” according to Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic.
“We’re going to be very patient with him,” Connelly said. “Prior to the injury we thought the guy was an easy first-round pick.”
Here’s more from around the Northwest:
- The Timberwolves received “a ton” of trade interest in forward Jaden McDaniels this week, league sources tell Krawczynski. Minnesota rebuffed inquiries from teams “all over the draft board,” Krawczynski adds.
- Armed with first-round picks at No. 9, No. 16, and No. 28, the Jazz were a candidate to make a consolidation trade on Thursday. Instead, they hung onto all three picks and were thrilled to land Taylor Hendricks, Keyonte George, and Brice Sensabaugh, writes Eric Walden of The Salt Lake Tribune. “The way the draft board fell took a really fortunate turn for us,” general manager Justin Zanik said. “We got two of the guys that we had in our top 10 — players that we were, frankly, debating out which one to take at 9, and we ended up getting both of them. And at 28, getting a player that we had in our top 18.”
- Hendricks, George, and Sensabaugh are all 19 years old, so the fact that the Jazz were willing to add all three to their 2023/24 roster is a reflection that they’re not in any hurry to accelerate their timeline for contention. Still, Tony Jones of The Athletic believes all three first-rounders are capable of playing rotation roles as rookies, noting that none of them are projects. “It’s not like we’re leaning into youth, we’re leaning into talent,” Zanik said, per Walden.
- The Thunder‘s plan is for former Kansas State forward Keyontae Johnson, the 50th pick in Thursday’s draft, to sign a two-way contract, head of basketball operations Sam Presti said on Saturday (Twitter link via Joe Mussatto of The Oklahoman).
Wolves are the 8th seed in West
Can Mavs take down Wolves and make playoffs?
Again, Rockets and Spurs are 12-15th seeds
Rockets have no star now
They need 2 stars to make playoffs
No…
Mavs have Kyrie… It’s the West… They are a play in at best…
Teams need to sign good free agents to improve
This is Kings plan
Trade is not the best path
Wizards and Jazz are tanking. It would kill Rockets chance to win 1 overall draft pick
Wizards blew it up. Jazz have already hit the reset last year and are a retool. They have no picks really next year but the top 10 protected and the draft is weak .
They will be assertive in free agency. Missed out on Kp. They would have gone after him.
Will see what they do but jazz have cash
Very interested in seeing what they do with Naz
I think a cap team should just swoop but its going to be a fiery market (with plenty of MLES) , one that will be difficult for Minny to compete with even with full birds considering they have Rudy/Kat and now Miller on the frontline
If I’m a cap team Im not messing around with offer sheets on Reaves/Cam I’m going after him day 1 – SAS/Hou would be great great fits even if you have to overpay 2~3 mill a year. Id put a 4/60 with 50 mill guaranteed on the table if either of those teams for Naz, or a 3/45 with a 4th year player option for 15 more- The 4/5 versatility works so well with teams on the rise and not yet fully settled
I agree. Even if Naz isn’t the answer longterm just go to 15 per and then trade him later.
Trade KAT the experiment failed.
Gobert and ANT can be the 2024 reincarnation of what the Jazz had in Spida and Gobert.
Use whatever you can get from KAT to build around that. In a perfect world you go for Trae Young. Perfect fit alongside ANT as he will space the floor and help play-make/facilitate. Trae is great at getting the centre involved offensively two with lobs and picks and rolls. Trae is terrible defensively and having guys like ANT McDaniels and Gobert around him should be enough to cover for that. Capela and Hunter were never enough and yet he got them deep into the playoffs.
If that’s not on the cards then, RJ Barrett and extras could be an option. Kyrie via sign ask trade which picks possibly? Who knows but that’s how I’d take steps to improve
Even with Ant, McDaniels, Anderson and Gobert on the floor there would not be enough defence to make up for Trae…
Hawks should jump at a Trae for KAT swap… Wolves could find a star or find many rotation pieces for KAT instead…
I think it would definitely be enough to cover Trae. Gobert used to single handily cover to Spida in Utah. In fact the defensive from everyone is Utah was terrible they just go to run everyone off the perimeter and try send them inside to Gobert.
I’d also love to see an offence run but Trae and ANT. Trae can gives teams so many problems. He can shoot the real deep ball, has a green light from anywhere on the perimeter. Get to close to him he will get past you and can draw a foul in the mid range, he will put up a floater in traffic, will lob the big man if you try switch and can kick to the corner if he draws in ate room from the wing.
He’s just got so much moves and has this magnetism. You give him a real number 1 scoring option off of that in ANT it’s over. He’s never had a go to scorer like that, Murray is more of a ball handler and Hunter/Collins etc don’t even compare to ANT. ANT can play off ball he’s had to share the rock with KAT, Conley and Beverly. You now give him a real ball handler like Trae it’s going to be crazy
