In trade talks with rival teams so far this offseason, the Rockets have held firm on their position that they don’t intend to move anyone from their young core, says Kelly Iko of The Athletic. According to Iko, that core is made up of guard Jalen Green, forwards Jabari Smith and Tari Eason, and center Alperen Sengun.
Another young Rockets player, Kenyon Martin Jr., has been “deemed attainable internally” if the team receives a strong offer, per Iko, who says that Martin has continued to draw interest from potential trade partners as of late.
Houston will soon have to decide whether to exercise Martin’s minimum-salary team option for 2023/24, which would put him on track for unrestricted free agency in 2024. Declining the option would mean paying Martin a larger salary next season, but would allow the club to negotiate with him as a restricted free agent.
Here’s more from Iko on the Rockets:
- Once viewed as a decision between Amen Thompson and Cam Whitmore, the Rockets’ No. 4 pick now appears likelier to come down to Amen and Ausar Thompson, sources tell The Athletic. Iko is among the reporters who has heard rumblings about Whitmore’s stock slipping as the draft nears, and says his sources are becoming “increasingly confident” that Houston will keep the No. 4 pick and draft Amen Thompson.
- Although the Rockets talked to Charlotte and Portland about moving up from No. 4, that’s unlikely to happen, Iko writes. Houston remains open to moving its lottery pick, but it would take a significant offer to get the team to seriously consider it. That sort of offer hasn’t been put on the table so far, though the Rockets have been offered good “starter-level” players, according to Iko.
- The more research the Rockets’ front office has done on this draft class, the more impressed they’ve been with the talent available, says Iko, adding that the club now seems more likely to keep its No. 20 pick than to trade it. That’s still very much up in the air though — according to Iko, Houston has talked about trading up into the 10-18 range. If a deal to move up doesn’t materialize and the Rockets’ preferred targets aren’t available at No. 20, trading the pick would still be an option.
If any of the teams in the early lottery can trade their pick for a later lottery pick, and value, or assets they will.
This draft is weak, and teams know whoever they draft is a longterm project if it isn’t VW
This a strong 1st rd …….. catch up
First off ….. in any other draft Scoot or Miller could go 1. Hendricks and Lively in 3-4 yrs could be starters. Two solid bigs. The twins have the potential to be 2way stars.
And then?
There must be 100 articles you can read. To understand the depth of this draft. If you really care. You can Inform yourself. My teaching time is valuable …..
Is this weakest draft from 4 to 14?
I did not see any all-star level players
You trade 4 or 5 for an all star?
I like Scoot, and a couple others, but I can see how far Scoot, and Miller need to develop before being NBA rotation players. (Or they need a really bad, talentless NBA team)
I think you are right, and we’ll find out tonight if the rest of the NBA agree’s.
Could be playing possum before the draft to not tip-off the viewers, but I think teams passed on Scoot, and Miller, and are looking toward the offseason trade market.
Rooks can still be traded after the draft if not signed, so there could be more to this even after tonight.
The trades won’t come until tomorrow.
I’d bet after the start of the season, and after summer league rooks will still be changing hands.
I expect an active offseason
Consensus pick is Amen. However, if you look at how the consensus vs actual went last year….

1. Smith – Banchero
2. Chet – Chet
3. Banchero – Smith
4. Ivy – Murray
5. Murray – Ivy
6. Sharpe – Mathurian
7. Mathurian – Sharpe
8. Daniels – Daniels
If there are no trades though the consensus Top-8 is:
1. Victor C
2. BM SF
3. Scoot PG
4. Amen G
5. Whitmore SF
6. Walker PF
7. Asur G/F
8. Black G/F
At 4, with the Rockets you have to start thinking of roster construction. I would say SG, PF, and C are all pretty much cemented – you’re going to see what you have with Green, Smith, and Sengun. And Eason to backup Smith.
So PG and SF – KPJ could be moved. Tate is undersized to play the 3, is 27 and also could be moved.
Amen and Asur both are subpar shooters, but you’ve got two 6’6 (with shoes) guards both with 7-ft wingspans. If you’re intent on keeping KPJ, I’d say Whitmore has the more polished game and you slot him at the wing. Jarace Walker could be a dark horse pick, as a potential 3&D guy. Let’s assume that Asur and Black don’t leapfrog to #4.
Another potential option is that they trade back from 4 to #6 and #11? IF they did this, I can see them taking a combination of Walker, Black, and Wallace. That would give them two of the top defensive prospects coming into this draft. Not everyone on the roster can be score-first.
This draft isn’t as much of a wild card draft as 2013, where there wasn’t even a consensus number one, let alone the rest of the draft, but the 2023 draft might end up being carried by VW much like Tim Duncan carried 1997 for years. Aside from McGrady and Billups, the rest of that draft was kind of average, and Billups took a long time to develop while McGrady’s career got derailed by injuries.
I think Houston should go all in on a rebuild. Trade Green, porter, Sengun, Eason, Washington and Martin. Draft Henderson, lively, lewis and look at SGs. Maybe Hawkins. Re-sign Usman , boban, DJ and Christopher.
Read it again OMG. Always read below. Beverley, harden and more veterans is not raw. The bench is the rookies. It’s called a rebuild. I’m tired of these haters complaining about everything
Do you know what 1+1 is?
So the Rockets should trade their most talented players, keep the guys that probably won’t be on the roster after this season, and bring in Harden and Beverly…. What do you think that does for the Rockets exactly? I mean that might take the cake as one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read on here. Is it possible to report you for this?
If you keep going then sign harden, Beverley, veteran SF, PF and center to start while the young guys develop one year
You must be related to Sillyman ….
No that’s you saying NY should trade Robinson, IQ, Barret and two 1st picks for DeMar
This is what he said
The 2023 NBA Draft could be one of the most talented in recent memory

The 2023 NBA Draft will go down as one of the most anticipated in league history. It’s a deep class rich with talent at multiple positions, but there will be no suspense over the No. 1 overall pick.May 16, 2023

Why the 2023 NBA Draft could see a flurry of trades with a drop-off in talent in 2024, 2025 classes

Like I said …… this is a deep 1st rd. When you can find starters outside the top 10. It means it’s a deep draft. This draft has potential starters in the 1st rd.
Rockets should do all they can to draft Scoot. He will turn this rebuild. Into playing for the play in game. Also sign Brook Lopez.
Lively has been moving up. Rumors are Hawks are hot for him. And will move Capela. I’m Rockets I trade with Pels at 14. And take Lively. Brook can mentor their bigs. And they should be an intimidating big team in 2-3 yrs. Scoot and Lively are not only solid picks. They fill positions of need for the next 10 yrs.

Tmrw night is going to be fun ……
Iko is NOT connected to the rockets and is definitely just “reporting” his own inner monologue so take everything he says with a grain of salt as far as who the rockets may draft. Having said that, I do think this is a very good draft class and could see the rockets attach a player and their #20 pick to move up into the lottery. And I’m sure they’d also love to move up from 4 to draft scoot but I think the asking price is probably too high to do so. When you’re at this stage in the rebuild, you really don’t want to give up too many assets, especially if you like the guys who will still be available at 4.
Rockets trade KJ Martin and 20 to Mavs for 10. Fair deal?
link to bleacherreport.com
Got it. But what about KJ and 20 instead?
Mavs say no
Smh. PG. Beverley, Henderson, Nix SG. Harden, Hawkins, Christopher SF . Tate, Eason, draft? PF. Veteran?, Smith, Usman C. Veteran?, Lively, boban. Is this hard to understand. You need to hold these kids hands for everything today smh
Yes watching Chuck Hayes shooting free throws might be worth it. The team above is for rebuilding and one year for the vets. I don’t like their team right now and think they should blow it up
