The Pistons, Cavaliers, and Pacers are among the teams that have inquired about Sixers forward Tobias Harris, with Indiana showing the most interest, according to Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer. However, a source tells Pompey that a draft-night trade involving Harris is unlikely.
As Pompey explains, a separate source said the Sixers will likely only make a deal involving Harris if they get an offer that’s “hard to pass up.” Pompey has heard that teams around the NBA believe Philadelphia is overvaluing the veteran and is seeking “outrageous” packages in return for him.
Harris’ outsized contract has long made him a tricky piece to move in a trade, but he’s entering the final year of that deal in 2023/24. His $39MM+ expiring salary could appeal to teams looking to create cap flexibility beginning in 2024.
According to Pompey though, the Sixers view Harris as a good fit with new head coach Nick Nurse. If they keep him through this offseason, they could explore trading him at the 2024 deadline or could even try to re-sign him at a lower price next summer.
Here’s more on the 76ers:
- It seemed earlier this year that the consensus among rival executives was that James Harden would leave Philadelphia for Houston. That consensus no longer seems to exist, ESPN’s Zach Lowe said on a recent episode of The Lowe Post podcast. “The brakes have now been pumped, like slammed on, around the league to the point that I bet if you poll 50 front office executives, the majority of them would guess he’s going back to Philly,” Lowe said, per RealGM. According to Pompey, the Sixers don’t want to compromise their future by overpaying Harden on a long-term deal, but the Rockets also have reservations about committing huge money to him.
- The Sixers face two significantly different paths this offseason depending on whether Harden decides to stay or go, Pompey writes in a separate story for The Inquirer, exploring how the former MVP’s decision will affect the organization in the short and long term.
- Kyle Neubeck of PhillyVoice.com explores the impact of Montrezl Harrell‘s decision to turn down his player option for the 2023/24 season. While Neubeck believes a separation is in both sides’ best interests, he notes that the Sixers will need to address the backup center behind Joel Embiid, with Harrell expected to depart and Paul Reed headed for restricted free agency.
- In case you missed it, the 76ers are reportedly attempting to acquire a second-round pick in Thursday’s draft.
Bring Petrusev over and work on his development in a backup center role
You just said the word development in context of the Sixers. They don’t know what that is. No one gets developed there. Nick Nurse is also anti development so it’s a good match. As long as that word is never mentioned.
Who is Tyrese Maxey?
A good player. Doesn’t mean the Sixers can make him better.
Petrusev is not gonna move the needle.
The Clippers make the most sense. Bringing the Morris twins back to Philly might assuage the fanbase a little.
What’s that package going to look like? Harris/Leonard/George seems a little redundant. The clippers would need to add about 20 million in salary to Morris to make the math work. Two of the following would need to be added: Zubac (10), Plumlee (9), RoCo (12), batum (11). They could probably do lesser players if they use gordon (19) or powell (16). However, if the Sixers resign harden, I don’t see them having interest in trading harris for a reserve guard. They would need to replace Harris on the wing, and Morris may not be enough. If I were the Sixers, getting Morris/RoCo/plumlee would solve quite a few problems (wing defense, toughness, backup C) with one trade
Doing the happy dance that Harden will not return to Houston. When he retires he can if he has a home here. Not to play though.
So the Bojan + Burks deal could be in the works.
Harris is a way better player than sixers fans think. Trading him to just trade him would be a foolish move. Bringing Harden back doesn’t excite me at all. Sixers are a team stuck in neutral
Wow a second rd pick …….. stop the presses …. or I should say. This will blow up the internet ……
Sixers aren’t going anywhere while Moreyon is running that team. Fools to keep Harden. VanVleet is a better fit.
FVV sucks and would be a terrible fit with Maxey. Name me a back court in the last 10yrs we’re 2-G’s 6ft 2in and smaller did well together. Also FVV sucks
FVV is such an inefficient scorer. And like… he’s not an improvement over Harden in the playoffs. He had the one great first round series against the seven seed Nets, and was good off the bench in the 2019 finals, but other than that he’s been forgettable or bad. Harden has been equivalent or better every year in the postseason. So if they’re equal in playmaking, Harden is better in scoring, and Harden is better on defense just by the dint of being larger, FVV makes no sense. Not unless they trade for Zach LaVine or something, as well, and I don’t see that happening (or being a good move).
Look FVV is not trash, but I would not pay FVV more than 30M a year. Is he a 20-25M PG for the next 3 or 4 years. Sure. But he doesn’t want that he wants 30+.
Compared to Harden, Harden is a better scorer, passer FT shooter, 3P shooter, overall shooter. Defensively they’re on par by the metrics. Harden is 6’5 vs 6’1 tho. 2 small guards is not the path to a chip.
FVV is trash. I have watched him since his college days. He will sign with someone and two years later they will offer him to everyone in the league to take off their hands.
He’s not trash. He’s not an All-Star, but he’s an above-average starting PG and a great 6th man. He’s overrrated, and can’t be a main guy on a team. But he’s perfectly capable of being a solid everyday player. Just needs to go to a team that isn’t going to rely on him to do too much like Toronto has.
Harden is a good player, but he plays SO slow – it really hampers Maxey, who loves to play fast.
Totally agree. Harden plays sloppy but I want him back in Philly. Harden makes everyone around him better. Harris has a valuable contract and is underrated versatile player. Great chemistry in Philly unlike the knickerbockers where nobody is happy.
Just blow it up already
If they can get the Mavs to fork over THJ, Bertans and #10. It would solve a good amount of issues for the Sixers. While Bertans hasn’t lived up to his contract it looks like hes at least found his shot again. Tucker/Bertans at the 4.
If theh bring back Harden. You’re going Harden, Melton/Maxey, THJ, Tucker/Bertans, Embiid/TBD.
With #10 you’ve got options. Package it with House and Korkmaz to deal for a younger guy in that 10M range or move Bertans again. Keep it and take Taylor Hendricks, Gradey Dick, or Bilal Coulibaly.
Sixers problem for years has been their SF, usually playing guys out of position like Tobias. They had 2 good years of Iggy, 1 season of Butler. The only 20ppg scoring SF they had was Barkley back in 91-92. They’ve never had that elite 3. Jimmy was the closest, but wasnt even a full year.
Dick/THJ don’t solve that, but they’d be serviceable.
Harris is not a 40M a year guy on any team. The 76ers problems with harris is he is not catch and shoot,he likes to play off the dribble which makes offense less efficient in his case because he is not a good passer when pressured. THe 76ers also need rebounding as they were getting killed fromt he wing positions(maxey, melton) on offensive regounding by bigger stronger guards. Add to this that harris is a mediocre rebounder for a ‘4’ and when Embiid sits the 76ers struggle rebounding. Replacing harden with van fleet is so upside down its a joke. Van fleet has been abused on defense int he playoffs, maxey scored 38 on him so nurse replaced him as a starter against the 76ers. Harden is 6’5″ with a 6’11” wingspan(same wingspan as harris) so he can get to balls that van fgleet 6’2″ wingspan cannot get to, he is harder to shoot over and is thus more switchable on defense. Small guards mean nonswitchable defense which is opposite of all the good playoff contenders
“Get to the balls”? ayoooo
Harden going to Houston was such a made up story that made no sense for the Rockets. Hopefully it dies for good soon.
76ers: Call Connolly of the Timberpuppies on pick #53.
The organization has never known just what to do with second round picks anyway. Historically they have: traded them away, used them for draft & stash, wasted them on “no chance” prospects, and just sold them. Never used them to draft and develop talent, so why start now. The new owners (A-Rod & Co) who have paid a pretty penny to hapless owner Glen Taylor are likely hungry for money to offset some of their financial outlay with a quick buck for a draft pick of little value to them.
Based on the trade payout for Gobert, Connolly is a sucker anyway. Call him.
