Warriors forward Draymond Green is expected to decline his $27,586,224 player option for 2023/24 and enter unrestricted free agency, Marc J. Spears of ESPN reported on NBA Today (video link).
“I’m told that (new general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr.) has already met with Steph Curry and Draymond Green. The Warriors expect Draymond Green to opt out of the final year of his contract, I’m being told, but … the Warriors are going to do everything in their power, if he does as expected, to bring him back,” Spears said.
The television segment was centered on the impact of Dunleavy’s promotion ahead of a critical offseason. Spears hears it’s been a “smooth transition” thus far, citing the executive’s “strong relationship” with head coach Steve Kerr and his long NBA history as a former player. Spears added that the Warriors are fielding trade calls for Jonathan Kuminga and Jordan Poole.
The 2016/17 Defensive Player of the Year, Green is arguably the best defender of his generation, earning All-Defensive nods in eight of the past nine seasons, including ’22/23. He has been a critical member of Golden State’s dynastic run over that span, winning four championships to go along with four All-Star berths and two All-NBA selections.
That’s not to say Green’s time with the Warriors has been without controversy. He’s often among the league leaders in technical fouls, punched Poole before training camp started last fall, and was suspended for one game in the playoffs after an incident with Kings center Domantas Sabonis, among other prior transgressions.
The 33-year-old averaged 8.5 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 6.8 APG, 1.0 SPG and 0.8 BPG on .527/.307/.713 shooting in 73 regular season games (31.5 MPG) this past season. The Warriors won the title in 2022, but lost their second-round playoff series against the Lakers last month.
Green has spent his entire 11-year career with Golden State, the team that selected him 35th overall in 2012. He will become one of the top names on the open market if he does indeed decline the option.
After the first sentence, no point in reading the essay. So many goons in the nba, G. Allen, D Brooks, at time Pat Bev and etc, and it’s not that serious. Reno said it best, maybe 2 snickers to be safe. All we need is Sullivan to chime in saying he’ll opt out to sign a 4 year $220 mil contract, trade kuminga n Poole for dame.
Draymond is the king of goons
Draymond out here thinking he’s still relevant…
He ain’t getting that level of money from any team… Unless it’s a discount for the Warriors on a longer term deal…
It is really hysterical the way people think of Draymond. When the Warriors won their 1st Championship under Kerr, everyone said they were to soft because they shot to many 3s. They would have never won in the rough and tumble 80s. Now, a decade later, people criticize Draymond for playing like Pistons did. Hysterical.
True
Ok
Heaven forbid there’s a middle ground…
@Giants74 I 100% agree with this.
Its bad when Draymond does it, but totally fine if we are talking 80s and 90s NBA, which is the era these idiots relentlessly act like was “better” but the games were basically unwatchable rugby.
I don’t think Greens intentions were to kill him lol. Funny stuff. Maybe to hurt him but kill lol
Hard to tell with sabonis since he flops and grabs at players pretending he was knocked down. The Kings faked Sabonis injury because there is no way you dunk after getting inured like that.
He wasnt “trying” to hurt him, Draymond is NOT a dirty player – thats Grayson Allen.
Steven Adam’s would disagree.
Whatever, Dray’s a thug and I don’t like him all that much but if he should be in jail so should Rodman, Lambeer, Artest, Salley, Mahorn, McHale etc…
Easy on my pistons
I could see Draymond playing in the 80s…….you know, as that bench guy who hands Laimbeer and Rick their water. He could do practical jokes with Scott Hastings and practice his high fives
Doubt he gets the money that was on offer but at his age he’s probably happy with the money he’s made already.
I’m sure Bob Myers leaving, the Poole incident, and the poor playoffs run all played apart in his decision.
Lakers will be linked heavily with him as he is really good friends with Bron and may want to stay on the West Coast.
Returning home to Detroit could be another option. Veteran leader for a young side, take them to the playoffs. Would want to be paid a good wage but they have money to spend. I’d keep my eyes on these guys.
Draymond is retiring a 1-teamer. If anything he will re-sign with GSW for the minimum to prove hes a team player and allow the team to get better players on the bench.
Poole and Kuminga for kristaps, m Turner or Adams or another one I said before
Okay Dunleavy what do you do now? Feet to the fire immediately. Here’s why I say the vanilla comes in. This is Joe Lacob’s call and no one else. Dunleavy merely signs the papers.
english, do you speak it?
I speak it but I’m not sure if I write it very well. Grammar challenged I think.
I know the plus and minuses of trading and/or keeping Poole and Kuminga but it makes me really nervous to trade them.
Nobody wants Poole. They can’t do anything.
Orlando absolutely needs a player like Poole and has trade pieces.
I do think GSW will mostly stand pat and keep the core, only replacing the vets on the bench like white Donte.
No one wants Poole.
My Boss: Do you want to exercise your 27-1/2 million dollar option?
Me: Uh, let me think about it, yeah, I accept.
The difference between you and Draymond is that, unlike the NBA, Burger King isn’t paying people 27 million/year to cook french fries.
It’s really a no brainer for Draymond to opt out. He can not wait for another year to become FA. This offseason is his best shot to extnd his contract and he will get at least around $100m.
So which is better? $27m or $100m?
Green is forcing Warriors hand. Now if they do resign Green that most likely means Poole gets traded. When the CBA new rules hit in 2 years the Warriors will need to shed a lot of money.
I think the Warriors knew all along that Draymond was not going to opt in. Also, it’s pretty clear from the comments made by everyone since the end of the season that Poole and Draymond are never going to be cool and that if the Warriors are serious about rebuilding their team culture that one of them has to go. The money problems created by the new CBA just makes it more certain.
2 years? They start on July 1st
I mean he’ll be very lucky to get 27m over 4 years from any other team…
The Warriors will give him a loyalty bonus… But he ain’t getting 100m from them…
I wouldn’t pay him more than 22 mil over 4 years now that hes over 33 but someone will. He’s created the demand for himself and another team will probably push GS to make a bad financial decision.
Draymond needs to do hard time and learn his lesson. Stop glorifying this troublemaker. One game this season he will take things too far and someone is going to be really hurt/career ended. I feel nauseated thinking of what could be…
His shot keeps getting worse. He’s getting older, and in recent years he’s had the most mileage of the big three trying to keep a depleted team afloat prior to a grueling championship run. He can bring it in the playoffs but I’m not sure he can be the same anchor he has been for an entire season. He should take a team friendly deal for as many years as he can. GS needs front court help, bad
