While there’s speculation the Kings might make a run at Draymond Green in free agency, it would be shocking if Green didn’t re-sign with the Warriors, Marc Stein reports in his latest Substack post.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst floated the idea that Sacramento could pursue Green with the additional cap space it opened up by shedding Richaun Holmes‘ contract on draft night. Sacramento could have $33MM or more in cap room to play with and Sacramento’s coach Mike Brown was Steve Kerr‘s top assistant with the Warriors. Owner Vivek Ranadivé has always had a deep admiration for the Warriors and acquiring Green would be a proverbial feather in his cap.
However, Green remains intent on retiring as a Warrior, despite declining his $27.6MM option, with a three-year deal considered the most likely outcome, according to Stein.
Stein provides some additional tidbits:
- Despite limited resources, the Grizzlies were planning to make a run at Green until they traded for Marcus Smart in a draft-night blockbuster. Memphis could only dangle its $12.4MM mid-level exception — which seems like a non-starter, given the money Green is leaving on the table — yet the team had serious interest in him until acquiring another defensive stalwart, says Stein.
- The addition of Smart makes it more obvious the Grizzlies won’t bring back Dillon Brooks, Stein writes. Despite some poor playoff performances that included an ejection during the Grizzlies-Lakers series, Brooks is still expected to seek a contract with a starting salary above the non-taxpayer mid-level.
- It’s increasingly likely that James Harden will remain with the Sixers rather than bolt in free agency and return to Houston. Harden apparently had a positive introductory meeting with new coach Nick Nurse and was intrigued by Nurse’s vision for making the Sixers a championship team, per Stein.
Except Warriors, I don’t see anyone is offering Draymond more than 3 years $60mm contract
Draymond has little trade value, comparable to DLo
Draymond has plenty of trade value, do you follow basketball? Every single contender has room for Draymond Green, he’s a genius whether you like that reality or not.
What do you mean, “do you follow basketball?” Sillivan is on here every other day for the last 5 Years posting his opinions. I don’t always agree with them but I love his passion for the warriors. Yes Sillivan follows basketball. Strange question.
I wouldn’t say he follows basketball just because he posts all day every day. He usually trashes the blazers and rockets throws random numbers out mentions another random team (hey how about those hawks). At most he probably reads the headlines on espn
I thought it was pretty obvious that Sillivan is actually AI. Go back and look at some of Sillivan’s older posts.
His ability to get suspended in playoff games is like no other
Draymond and his 5-5-5 stat line is far from a genius lmao
Dude wouldnt even be remembered by basketball fans if he didn’t ride those curry/Klay coat-tails.
On any other team, he’s an awful player, but because he has gotten to luckily play on some of the most stacked teams he gets overrated by nearly every Warriors fan.
Watching the game and understanding the game are not the same thing.
Agreed, Sully’s take is a little ridiculous…no team would offer him over 20M and he has little value…smh
Often injured one way players can sometimes make up for their lack of ability with high IQ play…
Draymond is Ben Simmons in his 30s…
I can’t see any team giving up significant assets for Green. Perhaps when he was younger, but not now.
The Kings would be fools to at least NOT to try to get Draymond. He could jump the Kings to the next level.
He could provide what they seem to lack currently and that’s a post man on defense with toughness and lockdown mentality. You’d probably want a guy like Draymond but 3 inches taller but those guys are few and far between. The Kings might take a power forward instead.
I’d aim for someone who can contribute on both ends of the floor if I were the Kings…
They need a true 3 and D player alonside their current stars…
If Green would actually entertain the idea of joining the Kings what would that mean for Sabonis? If they squashed the beef from the playoffs I missed it just seems there would be bad blood there
Dude pros don’t care about these things. They don’t have to love each other, just have to respect each other as teammates.
I don’t understand why anyone would even consider giving Brooks that kind of money. He’d be fine if he recognized his limitations, but he actively hurts the team by demanding a proactive role on offense and picking fights.
Even if we gave up a little too much for my liking to get Smart, I’d much prefer someone who plays with an equal amount of heart yet simultaneously recognizes his role
I agree about Brooks… China is where he’ll make that money…
As for Smart he’s not as bad as Brooks but still has an oversized vision of his role on a team on the offensive end…
Every night he guards the opposing teams best guard/wing, While 14ppg. You can blame him all you want for that series , but he was clearly the scapegoat & they had a depleted roster.
Points/game is the empty calorie of basketball stats. It’s easy to put up those sorts of numbers when you’re taking his volume of shots. He’s not an efficient shooter, which is fine, but he simultaneously neglects to realize it, which is a massive issue.
And it’s not just about the Lakers series. Brooks has been this way for the past 2 seasons and it’s frustrating to watch. Is he the sole reason we lost to LAL? Of course not, but he certainly didn’t help: in addition to ball hogging, he aggravated LeBron. It’s not that he can’t be a decent player; he just lacks self-awareness of his weaknesses
All the stuff you mentioned can be changed, but I forgot that you grizzlies fans prefer “real shooters”.
Maybe it can be. But half of the process involves effort by the individual himself to strive for change. Brooks is too stubborn to do so. Just listen to his comments after the postseason series about wanting a larger role on offense.
And nice troll attempt. Always love it when broad assumptions are made about people based on the teams they support
Just in case Nick Nurse didn’t get the memo yet ……. No amount of vision talk, pep-talk, inspirational talk will ever make James Harden play defense.
Ahaha spot on!
..aaand no ring with him in lineup.
The Grizzlies seem intent on players that fit a mold…
They get a chance to move on from Brooks, then they get Smart and are linked to Draymond…
Yeah and with Ja too, that team should be called the Memphis Knucklehead Squad
Kings don’t need Green.
Two guys Blazers should be looking at. Is Brooks and Bridges. Both out there waiting. And strong rotation players. Barnes is also a FA who can help a team.
Draymond Tweeted yesterday that LeBron called, they talked for 3 hours, and LeBron made it clear that Chris Paul was a really, really good friend. Draymond said if “Big Bro” is good with CP3 that he is too. Draymond is signing an extension, and will not be moving on to another team.
What if Draymond signed with the Kings, and led them to a Championship?
That would be ok, but prefer it minus Green lol
If the Kings really want to mess with everyone. Sign Draymond Green and Brooks
I can’t wait until Harden resigns with Philly. Just to end anymore talk of him returning to the Rockets. They already have a lot of guards after drafting another at #4. Rockets should trade 1 or 2 of those young Guards. Nix, KPJ (who just got an extension), and Green would be my choices to be on the block. I’d consider Christopher as well, but won’t be overly excited about it.
Other guys I’d be interested in seeing what they could get in return is, Tate Jr, Martin Jr, and Matthews. Pin one of these with KPJ or Green for a young super star, I’d excited about it. There are a few teams over the cap and could consider reducing their cap penalties
If the Kings were to sign Draymond, they lose an extra 15 games compared to last year. It would just completely ruin the teams chemistry. Sabonis could of died because this animal tried to crush his rib cage, pathetic. If some 300 pound man pushed Draymond to the ground and then jumped on his ribcage, he’d be in jail and Draymond would try and sue. Heck, after the last playoff game, Draymond said “Yo mane I don’t respect Sabonis, he didn’t shake my hand yo”. Sabonis is the heart and soul of this Kings team. Doing this would be a complete slap in the face. Lets not forget how he incinuated that Chris “Mad Dog” Russo was racist because Mad Dog said he should just shut his big mouth and play. If Sabonis was the one that jumped on Draymond’s ribs, Sabonis would probably be banned from the NBA because they would say hes racist. 1 game suspension and no jail time for trying to kill someone, ridiculous
