There’s no guarantee that Jordan Poole will be on the Warriors‘ roster next season, but the front office isn’t actively shopping him and there’s not a demand from ownership to reduce salary, sources tell Anthony Slater of The Athletic. Slater states that nobody from Poole’s camp has received an indication that he will be traded this summer.
Golden State officials would probably listen to trade offers for Poole, Slater adds, but the organization doesn’t mind bringing back the core of the team for another season. The strictest penalties for high-spending teams in the new Collective Bargaining Agreement won’t take effect until the 2024/25 season, and Klay Thompson‘s $43MM salary will be off the books by then.
The four-year, $123MM extension that Poole received last fall will kick in next season, raising his salary from $3.9MM to $27.4MM and providing another financial challenge for a team that’s already well into luxury tax territory. Re-signing Draymond Green could push the organization’s total bill for tax and salaries to more than $400MM. Even so, Slater’s sources say the Warriors aren’t looking at salary-dump trades this offseason and the goal of any moves will be to make the team more competitive.
Poole had a down year after helping Golden State win the NBA title in 2022, leading some observers to question whether he’s able to live up to his new contract. He averaged a career-high 20.4 PPG, but he shot just 43% from the field and 33.6% from three point-range. He saw his playing time fluctuate, both in the regular season and playoffs, and was particularly ineffective during the second-round loss to the Lakers.
However, Poole has strong supporters in Kirk Lacob and Mike Dunleavy Jr., who are running the team ahead of the impending departure of general manager Bob Myers. Lacob and Dunleavy were both strong supporters of giving Poole his extension, according to Slater, who notes that during his time as a scout, Dunleavy was a proponent of drafting Poole in the first round in 2019.
The Warriors still haven’t named a formal replacement for Myers, Slater adds, but Lacob and Dunleavy are expected to eventually have their roles elevated and will continue running the team.
It makes sense for them not to shop him. His trade value is probably at an all-time low, and he’s shown he can contribute to this team. They won’t get much value for him in a trade, and ditching him would be purely financial. Unless they get a big overpay in talent in return, the Warriors are better off keeping him and hoping he can rebound, at least for the moment.
Totally agree. Move Thompson.
Thompson will retire as a Warrior.
Agreed. Thompson will be a Warrior. Poole is only 23 and learning. Just a down season…
Its totally insane how transparent so many are to break up the core of the Warriors? Why you so scared?
Of course they are not “shopping” him. Bob Myers just quit. He was never gonna be shopped anyway. Golden State will wait and see who emerges as “available”. If a bona fide “star” player should become available …. Then Golden State will make Jordan Poole and his fat contract available in a package. Watch how “available” Jordan Poole becomes if Jaylen Brown demands a trade.
Poole is available for the right price. Teams always say they are not shopping a player so they can get maximum value for him. Teams has probably called up with lame offers like Chris Paul.
A young player can have a down year especially after winning a title and signing a mega extension. It happens to the best of the players. But what bothered me the most was it seemed like Poole gave up on the team in the postseason. He was moody and totally checked out for several games. Bad shooting, turnovers, bad defense are all ok, but not giving up on the team and your teammates. He needs to really go deep and search his heart and soul to learn from his mistakes and apologize to the team.
That was entirely Kerr not being a good HC. He thought because Poole cooked the Celtics than that meant all 3 guard lineups were going to work when that was never going to be the case.
Poole won a title and had a championship hangover season. Happens to so many players. He’s staying, as likely everyone in the core. No matter how badly everyone wants to break up GSW, its not happening.
Poole, simons , herro , maxey , sexton ! All simialr players! Very talented microwave scorers who give much of it back on defense! None will ever be an all star or best player on a team that wins more games then it loses! Some trade value in them but limited trade value! Maxey is the best of them probably
Sexton and Maxey are the best of the bunch; they can defend at least at a neutral or slightly positive level and make plays for others. Herro doesn’t have defensive instincts. Simons doesn’t have defensive ability. And Poole is too volatile. Sexton just can’t seem to stay healthy anymore, while Maxey was stuck playing in a backcourt with the most lackadaisical defender in the NBA.
I could easily see Maxey or Sexton taking a step forward (or for Sexton, regaining his form from a couple seasons ago); Maxey is still really young, while Sexton isn’t all that experienced with winning teams and has spent a lot of time in recovery.
For the Jazz’s sake other than recovering from the injuries I hope Sexton doesn’t regain his form from a couple seasons ago. He’s finally starting to learn the value of ball movement in Will Hardy’s system. His assists were up, his turnovers down, FG% up and he had his best 3p% since his rookie season.
I meant more in terms of his athleticism and aggressiveness, but yeah, his improvements on the mental side of the game should stick. His floor is higher now, but he hasn’t regained the ceiling he once had. I mean, a couple years ago he took on the entire Nets Big 3 and outplayed all of them. He was a guy with 30 ppg upside as the primary option. Now he has the improved technique and self-awareness, he just has to get back into form.
What if Poole gets consistent? Why do you all think he’s finished developing? Especially after how astonishing he rise was?
Yes I’ll easily take the Bet that he will never make an all star game ! His role should always be microwave scored off the bench !
Was it that astonishing? Because the season before his breakout, his numbers weren’t all that different on a rate basis. He just got more playing time. Once he got over the initial hump of playing in the NBA, he improved.
I could see him making incremental improvements, but his defense is hard capped; he isn’t good on that end of the floor. Unless he gets his turnovers and overaggressive plays under control, he won’t improve at all, but his more aggressive play is what drove his improvement in the first place. Kind of a Catch 22.
The Warriors haven’t given any indication Poole will be shopped because tried and no one wants to pay his salary to turnover prone, sour puss sixth man.
He’s not any kind of future star! He’s a good player on a star Salary! They wouldn’t get much back for him
He’s a negative value today, they’d have to pay themselves out of him
GSW is screwed for next year anyways, as first poster said its probably best to re-coup some value next year then re-access in 12 months
Poole is most overrated player in NBA. That’s why he got hammered by his own teammate. Nobody wants him. Unless it’s Hammer Time. Better enjoy this yr. Cause it will be the last yr Warriors are competitive.
Poole is a good player that got way overpaid because Draymond punched him in the face and the Warriors organization didn’t want to break up the team chemistry as they felt that Poole was an important cog to their last title run. 130 mil for Jordan Poole? Really? Poole’s worth is probably around 4 years at 60 million total. As usual another Bob Myers blunder. Durant saved Myers job. 30 mil a year for Draymond, close to 200 mil for Klay Thompson (who they knew was injured), and of course Jordan Poole. Picked Wiseman #2 overall when Lamelo was available. Most overated GM in the game
Poole got “overpaid” because the size of his contract makes him an easy fit into a trade package for a veteran “star”.
That’s why he’ll be the highest paid gm in the league if he decides to return in 2024. Last time I looked, Kevin Durant agreed to a sign and trade even though he didn’t have to. I guess he did it because he hated Myers. Talk about your Mets gm, most overrated in the game.
They won’t trade Poole because they’d have to attach picks to move him as well as take back an undesirable player or two.
Not true lol
