Chris Paul‘s deliberate, often ball-dominant style seems like a strange fit with how the Warriors operate offensively, but it could be just strange enough to work, opines Seerat Sohi of The Ringer.
As Sohi details, the contrasting styles between Paul and Golden State were on display multiple times in the Western Conference playoffs, with the Warriors prevailing on two of those three occasions (Paul’s Clippers defeated the upstart Warriors in the first round in 2013/14).
However, the Warriors have also had success with high IQ veterans who can control the tempo, Sohi notes, particularly former swingman Shaun Livingston. Paul may be able to help get Golden State’s young players easy shots on the second unit, according to Sohi, and allow Stephen Curry to play more off the ball when they’re paired.
Obviously it’s a risk since Paul is 38 years old and he could be backing up another older player who has been injured a lot the past few seasons in Curry. But the Warriors might be better next season with Paul instead of Jordan Poole, and shedding Poole’s long-term contract while picking up Paul’s non-guaranteed deal for ’24/25 gives the team financial savings in the future, Sohi writes.
Here’s more on the Warriors:
- Paul and Curry are excited to be teammates, with the two-time MVP blessing the blockbuster trade, sources tell Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic. Thompson takes a look at the shared history between the two former rivals.
- New general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. says the team plans to have Trayce Jackson-Davis on the 15-man roster, according to Anthony Slater of The Athletic (Twitter video link). The Warriors traded cash considerations to Washington to land the No. 57 pick in last night’s draft, which they used on the Indiana big man. “We’re not overly loaded in the frontcourt,” Dunleavy said, adding the Warriors had him much higher on their draft board.
- As Slater writes for The Athletic, agreeing to include 2022 first-rounder Patrick Baldwin in the Poole/Paul trade created considerable tax savings, but it was also a bet on Jackson-Davis being more ready to contribute next season. Dunleavy’s brother, James Dunleavy, is Jackson-Davis’ agent, and the sides worked together to ensure he wouldn’t get picked until the Warriors could select him. Getting a guaranteed minimum-salary contract is rare for a player chosen late in the second round, Slater notes, but that’s the intention for the forward/center.
Maybe I missed the part of the article about Baldwin?
Warriors are best with a wide variety of players. The Durant era is over and their only hope is a return to strength in numbers.
Its noted in the article about the Warriors trading for Trayce
This didn’t work with D Russell. Try again I guess
Stop posting until you understand basketball better. Read and observe. Chris paul is an on ball guard. Dlo is a off ball guard. Chris paul is a high iq player. Dlo is a low iq volume shooter chucker. Jordan poole and Dlo would have been a much better comp than chris paul and dlo. So no they are not “trying again” they have never had a player similar to chris pail on their roster.
I know than you troll. You just a new age fan. You know nothing
I told everyone to draft Jackson-Davis
Trade Paul and Kuminga to Minnesota for either Towns or Gobert and Kyle Anderson. Or trade him somewhere to to drain his contract for a future pick. Then sign Lopez or N Vouch or etc etc etc etc Thabeet
Resign Green, Moody and Lamb as well
This is a salary dump, nothing more. Media making a bigger story of this bc CP3 is on a book tour.
If CP3 can accept coming off the bench like Iggy did,the Warriors will win another ring. They lacked a lot of veteran leadership. Poole was not ready.
Curry Thompson Looney Wiggins DiVincenzo who’ve won championships isn’t enough veteran leadership?
Issue isn’t veteran leadership, issue is developing talent which the warriors haven’t been doing well lately. Adding cp3 doesn’t make kuminga moody davis-jackson podziekski into better contributors.
No bench = no championship. Warriors championship inspirations hinge on their young guys turning into consistent solid contributors.
Now if the warriors wind up trading kuminga moody for veteran bench pieces or future picks and sign veteran bench pieces it’s a different story. But adding cp3 doesn’t instantly make them the favorite in the west after watching the Nuggets.
DiVincenzo hasnt won a title from veteran leadership he was 23 when Giannis gifted him a ring.
He was in his 3rd season and a steady contributor averaging
10.2ppg/5.8rpg/2.8asp
Even rotational guys bring veteran leadership to a team.
I can’t think of any team that has more veteran leadership than the Dubs.
Chris is not staying. Poole wasn’t working. They just wanted out of contract. CP3 is not a fit here in SF. They will flip him or buy him out. It’s guaranteed for 15.8 mill. He’s going to Lakers or Clippers
if that’s the case then that trade is even worse.
That’s not the case at all lmao imagine believing KnickerbockerAl over GSW fans.
Poole won a title, what do you mean “wasnt working”? He averaged more PPG every single year in this league. He had a title hangover year, like many dudes in this league do. He still was very good.
Jordan Poole’s long term contract with GSW was the ONLY and SOLE reason why they moved on from him. That’s a FACT that haters on here will never want to believe in, because all haters do is believe lies to begin with.
CP3 was a salary dump to get rid of Pooles bad contract. I would not be surprised if CP3 is flip again to another team. Meyers poor drafting era is over and now some new blood with older players that do not need to be brought along slowly. If Meyer was still the GM we would still have Poole and picked Whitmore and watch him struggle in the G league.
Whitmore is the gnarliest player to try and predict, my hat is off to you saying he will g-league it, Ive heard he could be a star really quickly from others.
Only thing about whitmore is he has a NBA ready body. Reports are he is lazy at times and not good on switches. Reminds me of Oubre who was here a few years ago. Sometimes a good player but most of the time just sat and watched plays around him. A guy with a lot of talent but no drive.
The salary got fully guaranteed to make the trade with Washington initially. Next season isn’t guaranteed
If no new contract is negotiated before June 28, then the entire $30.8 million will become fully guaranteed. None of his salary for the 2024-25 season is guaranteed. At the end of the 2024-25 season, Paul is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the age of 40.
June 28 …….. means he can get cut or bought out for less than 18 mill if he wants
We will see, but that’s the opposite of the current narrative.
Only way Cp3 is isn’t a Gsw is if he A/requests it abd B/ Gsw obliges
Gsw is in no position to be handing out favors today
Looney
Green
Wiggins
Thompson
Curry
Kuminga
Payton II
Paul
Moody
Jackson-Davis
Quinones
Podziemski
with THREE big name FAs on the way. Not gunna lie, this could get scary for the league. Praying GSW targets bigs and guys with no injury risks.
Green is not a given since there is a few teams will offer him a good contract. They still need a tall center that plays defense and screen and roll.
Draymond is a given, dont buy into the media hype.
I hope all 3 FAs are over 6’9″.
3 teams will be bidding for him. Kings, Mavs, and Lakers. If Lakers do not sign their FA then they will go all out for Green and he is loyal to LeBron.
Green being loyal to Lebron ends with Lebron coming to GSW for Wiggins at the end of this season to join the Big 3 in SF.
2 of those 3 dont have cap room and would require GSW to participate in a S&T which they have shown no willingness to do. Its SAC and scrubs in terms of cap room…
No team is gonna pay him more than the Warriors…
Hell I’d believe that most if not all of the “other teams interest” in Draymond comes from hus agent trying to get the Warriors to up their price…
THREE big name FAs? They might be able to get one big name guy *who can still play* if they can use the MLE. Of the free agent bigs out there Mason Plumlee would be the best fit for the Warriors but he will be out of their price range.
Yes three! This is a team with title aspirations, the still-star level chipless veterans are going to flock and take smaller 1-year deals to play on Steph Curry’s team.
Nah they’ll go to Denver where the injury history and age is far more likely going to net them a ring over Golden State…
The Warriors will have to outbid other teams as well as Denver…
Name just one “star level” free agent who is without a championship who you think would sign for the vet min?
Why don’t you name us just two? All they can sign is players for the vet minimum.
GSW doesn’t have cap space for “THREE big name FAs”, and Green is a UFA.
We will see what Duncelevy is able to do.
Why not give Dunleavey a chance before resorting to name calling? Totally unnecessary and not at all cute/funny. Your comment doesn’t sound at all like a Warrior fan to me.
Quinones isn’t on the 15-man roster yet, so Warriors have four available spots. Undrafted Javon Johnson (6’6 200lb wing from DePaul) reportedly will sign a one-year contract with the Warriors. Also, Donte has not yet declined his player option, so he is a possibility. Other roster spots will have to be filled with vet mins.
With teams required to spend at least 90% of the cap, DDV will get at bare minimum 12 million a year.
There is a good division 2 center out there in Tyshaun Crawford. I’m glad the warriors signed Yuri Collins
Should of signed Davis out of Detroit mercy. Justin Johnson SG is available.
CP3, if and for so long as he’s healthy, will provide tremendous value to GSW, particularly in the playoffs. Consistent with his salary? Probably not (but he’s being paid in part to get off Poole’s long term deal). Look at the value that Lowry (another veteran PG well past his prime) provided to MIA during their playoff run, even after being a 30 mm per year bust for two seasons.
Or C Patrick Gardner Marist Sr
Patrick Gardner (Marist) signed with the Heat for summer league.
Nevermind with that one
Thanks
Taylor Currie overseas. A young center anywhere. What about the Alec S or Mcad, or Macaw, Quinn, etc etc guy they had or Jessup their draft rights. Bogut?
Trade Paul and Kuminga to Minnesota for either Towns or gobert and Kyle Anderson
GSW don’t have enough picks to make that work…
Or trade Paul to complete absorb for salary relief and resign Green, Lamb and Moody. Sign Lopez or N Vouch.
Luke- we can’t afford free agents other than vet mins. Lopez and Vouch aren’t signing vet min contracts. Warriors will resign Draymond and Moody is under contract with Warriors for two more seasons. I don’t know if Lamb and Ty Jerome will be invited back to training camp. Probably not.
Unless they trade Paul for cap relief
