5:16pm: The Wizards will receive about $3.5MM in cash from the Suns as part of the deal, tweets John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7.
2:58pm: The Wizards and Suns have finalized their Bradley Beal trade agreement, sources tell ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (Twitter links).
The blockbuster deal is not yet official, but the two sides have formally agreed on the terms. They are as follows, according to Wojnarowski:
- Suns to acquire Beal, Jordan Goodwin, and Isaiah Todd.
- Wizards to acquire Chris Paul; Landry Shamet; the Suns’ second-round picks in 2024, 2025, 2026, 2027, 2028, and 2030; first-round pick swaps in 2024, 2026, 2028, and 2030; and cash.
- Note: Paul will be flipped to Golden State in a separate trade.
It was previously reported that Goodwin and Todd would go to Phoenix as part of the package, and we knew that the Wizards were receiving “multiple” second-round picks and first-round swaps. However, it’s news that Phoenix is sending every second-rounder and first-round swap it possibly can to Washington.
NBA teams can only trade picks for up to seven drafts in the future, so this deal will have to wait until after Thursday’s draft is officially completed, since it includes assets from 2030.
The Suns previously traded away their 2029 second-round selection, so they’ll send the Wizards their six remaining tradable second-rounders.
Phoenix also previously dealt its 2025, 2027, and 2029 first-round picks to Brooklyn and gave the Nets the right to swap first-round picks with the Suns in 2028. The Suns will be able to offer Washington the ability to swap first-rounders with Phoenix in 2024, 2026, and 2030 and the ability to swap the Wizards’ own first-rounder with the least favorable of the Suns’ and Nets’ picks in 2028.
There’s also a scenario in which the Wizards would be able to swap their own first-rounder for the Sixers’ pick in 2028 if the Suns end up with that one instead of their own or Brooklyn’s, but that would require a specific set of outcomes and is probably a long shot.
A previous report stated that the Wizards and Suns are hoping to complete their trade call with the NBA on Friday. For cap-related reasons, the Beal trade will have to be completed in June, while the subsequent Paul trade with the Warriors will be finalized in July, tweets cap expert Albert Nahmad.
Phoenix’s owner really making it tough to build out the roster moving forward…or at least making any changes to that roster, once they do put it together
Washington has a lot they can still do now, with a lot of moving pieces, and a need for a 3 and D wing, or 2, and a defender at the 4. Now they have a lot of different assets they can hold, or use to still put something interesting together this year, and there should be guys in the draft at their ranges for them
Isaiah Todd is pretty skilled and an interesting player at the 4/5. He is still pretty raw, and his decision making needs to improve, as well as his defensive consistency, but he has a lot of theoretical things about him that makes him potentially useful, especially for a team like Phoenix who only has 6 guys on their roster, and needs a potential skillset like that at those positions
Goodwin can potentially be a good steals guy that guards some. He was inconsistent when I would see him in summer league, but I could see him holding a depth role on their roster. They arguably needed that before
You’re sleeping on Jordan Goodwin. He was 1 of DC’s best players last season & I don’t mean summer league. He was definitely better than Deni. He’ll push Okogie & TCraig for minutes no doubt
I agree about that last part. I probably should have phrased what I said better. He gives them something they were missing after moving Javon Carter, defensively, and that’s more important after moving Chris Paul, and especially with Beal and Booker there
I’ve seen you comment the line “Washington has a lot they can still do now, with a lot of moving pieces, and a need for a 3 and D wing, or 2, and a defender at the 4.” on about 7 different articles. Are you copy and pasting or typing it out every time? Lol
2 different articles…the trade and this,.. and ya I typed it out both times
Goodwin is better than you might think. He’s a really skilled point of attack defender and while he’s 6’3″, he has a 6’9″ wingspan. Very aggressive attacking the basket with good efficiency, which lends itself well to drive-and-kick playmaking that would work well with Durant and Booker’s cutting ability to create two-man games that the Suns use a lot. Surprising that the Wizards gave him up so easily, imo.
I might need to reread what I said…evidentally I said Jordan Goodwin killed someone’s puppy and is a nothing player. O wait, I checked, and I dont see that in there
you killed his dog?? thats John wick!
Looks a lot better now! Phoenix better win this year!
So that trade doesn’t look too bad now for the Wizards considering there wasn’t much they could do because of Beal’s no trade clause.
The pick swap in 2024 is a pseudo swap of course because the Wizards will be far worse than the Suns. Probably also in 2026. But who knows what happens until 28 and 30.
They also flipped CP3 for a first rounder and Poole (whom I don’t like much, but the Wizards could recover his value). Maybe they can also flip Tyus Jones for a first.
If we consider that they had almost no leverage due to Beal’s contract and NTC as well as the fact that Porzingis could have just left in free agency, these aren’t bad deals for the Wizards. The old front office and the owner are to blame for the situation. The new front office are making steps in the right direction.
Well said. I think the Porzingis point is especially important, since it seems many are operating under the assumption he was going to trigger his option regardless. If that deal doesn’t happen, he becomes a free agent and they get nothing.
Pretty good trade indeed.
Unfortunately they cannot directly flip Paul and create a bigger trade exception.
But if they group the Beal trade with the Porzingis trade, they could increase that trade exception.
If they flip Jones, Gallinari, Muscala or Shamet, that exception could drastically increase if they do it by tomorrow. In any case they might even gather more assets for those expiring contracts. Although for Galinari the highest value might be if they show he is recovered from injury I guess?
I don’t understand how there can be a 2024 first round pick swap when Washington doesn’t have a first round pick.
There is a protection on that pick. Maybe if the pick does not stay in Washington the 2024 pick swap will be removed from the deal? A conditional 2024 swap
That’s pretty impressive draft capital. The Wizards redeemed themselves. They didn’t necessarily get a quality pick (top 15) but they have a lot of value and unless it’s lottery protected those 2028 and 2030 picks could be valuable as the Suns try to compete post Durant or Booker.
Wow. No wonder the Heat’s offer wasn’t chosen in the end. Giving up all those 2nds and pick swaps for Beal is borderline malpractice, especially when you consider the new Wizards front office actually seems to have a long-term plan.
If I’m a Suns fan, I would be terrified in the direction the team is going under Ishbia. They are going to be terrible in a few years with little in the way of strong assets.
Unless Booker and Beal is leaving anytime soon i think they will still be around in 5 years. Booker is only 26 and Beal is 29. Of course Ishiba will be spending a boatload of cash to keep the team afloat.
Surrounded by a lack of depth thanks to minimal assets and the chokehold of the second apron. That problem will only grow with time. They better hope their health holds up.
Beal may be 29, but his injuries have been piling up lately. He’s also never been a clear driver of winning. How valuable will he be in his mid 30s? Hard to say right now, but there is at least some cause for concern there. More importantly, Durant will be gone while the others will be older and need to be resigned.
But, hey, if this ends up leading to a ring I guess it would have been worth it. I’m just not seeing it with the lack of defense until they can address that.
Maybe they’ve been secretly cloning Nash, KJ, Barkley, Marion, Dan Majorle (sp?) and the C from Nash’s prime, whose name escapes me, and they’ll all be ready to play in ’25 or ’26…
Kurt Thomas or Steven Hunter?
Amare Stoudemire.
I forgot they made Stoudamire play center for those teams. The 7SOL Suns were wild.
If they get lucky and win a chip they’ll get a pass. If it’s a failure they can recoup picks by moving Durant, Booker, Beal and Ayton. Look at what Boson got when they bailed on Harden, Irving and Durant:
Bridges, Cam, six 1st and five 2nd round picks.
Ayton will be long gone by then. And by the time they may finally decide to trade those key pieces, what value will they have? All three will either be close to expiring or need to be extended/resigned. If it’s the former, you will get something of value but not a boatload. If it’s the latter, why wouldn’t those guys simply bail via FA if the team would be on a downturn?
By then, Durant will be getting close to 40 and his body is already breaking down. Beal will be entering his mid 30s and has injuries of his own. Booker is the one guy with a pretty safe bet for value but, again, contract status will be crucial. None of those guys are going to command the haul that a 34-year-old Durant on a long-term deal did.
Moreover, if you are getting picks from a contender, how valuable will they be? Mid-to-late firsts? If you are getting young players back, how much upside will they have if they’re being traded for possible rentals? Couple that with a lack of their own picks and they may not be picking in the lottery for quite some time. They are going to need to draft very well.
It’s your assumption Ayton will be gone. Vogel expressed a desire to work with him. But we shall see. They don’t need Durant to be Ellie to still get picks for him. Where not talking 4 years from now. If they don’t come together in the next two years I wouldn’t be shocked to see them scrap it. That’s their window. 2-3 years.
Are the new Suns the previous Nets?
Phoenix just said screw the draft for the next 8 years, even with the 3 first round picks they still have I see them trading them as needed. Phoenix has given up on scouting college players, they won’t need a college scouting or go to the workouts or even have a summer team, they will save money in that.
They can’t trade them bud
It’s getting better, but WSH’s overall net yield for the three trades is still short of where it should be. If they can flip one of their PGs (Jones, Wright or Morris) for a 1st – it can be a trade up, they have enough 2nd’s – it would close out the KP6 deal at par and get the overall closer.
I don’t like WSH (I assume its them putting out the nonsense) trying to hide behind Beal’s NTC. His salary is what sucked all the life out of the value of his contract, not the NTC. All stars (and those playing stars on 2k) have a de facto NTC whether it’s in there or not. Think KD had any less approval over his destination than Beal had? Think again, he hand picked PHX (in season, it was PHX or he would stay with BKN for the year). Why not just fess up. You’re prioritizing getting these deals done quickly, and you’re OK if that means leaving some value on the table.
Seeing the entire Beal trade details, it’s clear that Isiah not only approved of the Beal trade, he likely structured it.
All this talk about a second tax “apron” but the first tax isn’t called an apron but rather a threshold. What’s the deal? This is basketball, not a cooking show!
There’s a threshold, a first apron ($7MM above the threshold), and a second apron ($17.5MM above the threshold).
Too many cooks in the kitchen!
The assets they acquired are all insignificant in the next 3 yrs… and the waiting is abt to begin and see if their decision of blowing out their team completely is the tight thing to do.
